Whither Geography?
Return Introduction Notwithstanding the central role that has been allocated to 'history' and 'citizenship education' via the new major reform in Quebec elementary and secondary classrooms, it is a sad fact - to some - that 'geography' has apparently been sacrificed on the playing fields of contemporary curriculum revisionism. While the various secondary subject specific development teams are still hard at work (the new high school programs for grades seven and eight are not slated for trial implementation until September 2001) and time allocations and grade designations have yet to be formally finalized, the emerging plan clearly renders geography to second tier status! While heavily engaged in the framing of the American Constitution and other matters resulting from the break with Britain, John Adams (1735-1826) found time to regularly correspond with his wife on all manner of issues. The schooling of their children was a paramount concern and in a letter dated May 12, 1780, this American leader and intellectual wrote: "I must study politics and war that my sons may have the liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural science, naval architecture, navigation, commerce, and agriculture, in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain."

The Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Lowlands -Quebec City Southern Quebec and Ontario, the industrial heartland of Canada, contain Canada's
two largest cities, Montreal and Toronto. In this small region, 50 percent of Canadians
live and 70 percent of Canada's manufactured goods are produced. The region also has prime agricultural land, for example the Niagara Peninsula. The
large expanses of lakes Erie and Ontario extend the number of frost-free days,
permitting the cultivation of grapes, peaches, pears and other fruits. The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence region is sugar maple country. In the autumn, the
tree's leaves, Canada's national symbol, are ablaze in red, orange and gold. The sap is
collected in spring and evaporated to make maple syrup and sugar, a culinary delicacy
first prepared and used by the Aboriginal North American peoples. Return to Canada WebQuest

The Political Voice Of Canadian Regional Identities Dimensions Of Canadian Regionalism:
Geography, Demography and Economy
For many, the primary cause of Canada's regional identities is the sheer size of the country and its geographic features, barriers and divisions. Physical features and climate, it has been argued, shape regional character and personality. Viewed from this perspective, Atlantic Canada is defined by its proximity to and historical relationship with the sea. The St. Lawrence river valley provided a geographic focus for Quebec, just as the Great Lakes and a fecund agricultural hinterland have for Ontario. The vast western plains that were transformed into one of the world's great "breadbaskets" made an indelible impression on the people who settled and developed the Prairie region, while the isolation imposed by the mountain barrier, along with the abundance and grandeur of British Columbia's natural environment, shaped the outlook of that regions's residents. Finally, the harshness of climate, vastness of distance, and frontier character of life in the north ensures that northerners will always have their own unique perspective. Demography , and in particular the ethno-linguistic and religious composition of a region's population, are also factors in the formation of regional identities. Here Quebec stands out as the primary case in point. The historical struggle for cultural survival of its French-speaking, Catholic population has always set it apart as a distinct region-nation within Canada.

Introduction to Qu ébec Location , Geography and Climate

Quebec [Québec] is a province in Canada, North America , bordered on the Southeast by the United States and New Brunswick, on it's Southwest by Ontario, on it's West and North by Hudson Bay, and on it's Northeast by Newfoundland. It has an area of 1 700 000 sq.km, and is three times as large as France. Population density is low, at 4.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. Northern Québec is sparsely populated with approximately 35 000 inhabitants. Approximately three fourths of Québecers live near the shores of the Saint Lawrence River. In the south, the climate is mild. The extreme northern portion of the territory has an Arctic climate. Québec's four distinct seasons start with a mild spring followed by a hot summer which is ended by a colorful but chilly autumn. Winter brings on the freezing cold and snow.
Québec has more than 1 million lakes and waterways. The Saint Lawrence River, one of the most beautiful stretches of water in North America, crosses Québec from west to east, for 1000 km [600 miles]. It then flows into the Atlantic. Thus making both Montreal [Montréal] and Quebec City, which border the St. Lawrence, world trade ports.

Quebec Book Air, Car or Hotel Quebec The second largest province in Canada is the province of Quebec, a province that is as much a part of Canada as it is apart from Canada. Bordered on its west by Ontario, east by Labrador (Newfoundland), its narrow strip north of the St. Lawrence River by the states of Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont and the province of New Brunswick, the biggest portion of Quebec is undeveloped and unaccessible. However, where settlements do exist and access is possible, few can deny, that nothing compares to the beauty and wonder of Quebec's sparsely settled land, let alone to the atmosphere of the solid, warm-hearted people living in these out of the way communities. Rightly nick-named La Belle Province (The Beautiful Province) Quebec is divided into three regions, the Canadian Shield, the St. Lawrence Lowlands and the Appalachian Region. Most of the population lives in the center region: the St. Lawrence Lowlands, as the northern Canadian Shield region is much too cold to sustain farming or livestock and the Appalachian is too rugged and wild.
