Culture of Quebec
fr:Culture québécoise Quebec is at once a North American society and the main French -speaking society on the continent. Montreal , the vibrant cosmopolitan metropolis of Quebec, is the second largest francophone city after Paris . History made Quebec a place where cultures meet, where people from all over the world experience America, but from a little distance and through a different eye. Often described as a crossroads between Europe and America, Quebec is home to a people who are connected to the strong cultural currents of the United States France , and Great Britain all at the same time. Quebecers have cultural activities which, on the whole, are fairly different from those of the 350 million English -speaking citizens of Canada and the United States who surround them, and those of France, the country from which they have been disconnected since the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763.

Question
Hi Josee,
Im a first year student at Simon Fraser University in B.C. Im currently doing a reasearch for a paper on the cultural ties/bonds that have played a role in creating Quebec as a distinctive culture area/region. Ties or bonds would include kinship, tradition, religion, language and political. The paper has to be within a specific time frame and not a general all inclusive time frame from 1600's to present. I was wondering if you could recommend any specific resources or historical events that would point me in the right direction. Thank you so very much for your time Kyle Answer Hi Kyle!

adjusting to Quebec
Question
Hi, Josee. I am from Texas and am planning to move to Montreal in the near future. My boyfriend is French Canadian. I have visited Montreal a couple of times and am a little concerned about the cultural differences - particularly the language as I do not speak French, yet. I am able to understand some written French, however, enough to get by. I am just curious as to how well I will be received by the Quebecoise while I am adjusting to my new surroundings. I am quite willing to adapt to the French Canadian culture but am really not sure what this will entail. I am 44 years old and plan to spend the remainder of my life in Montreal, so I will do whatever it takes to be accepted - I would just like an idea of what sort of task is before me. My boyfriend does a lot of business in the U.S. and speaks english as well as I do. He is more concerned about me adapting to the weather than the Quebec culture. I would appreciate your opinions on this matter.
Merci

Throughout history, the way people worked influenced their family and social lives as well as the political systems under which they lived. The social group has been central to human survival, from prehistoric times, through the agricultural economies and into the industrial era. Being a member of an extended family or organised social group assured survival of the individual. As the industrial age progressed, the nuclear family evolved and the size of the social group declined. The evolution and development of Quebec's distinct society follows this general trend, with some deviations that could affect the political future of the region. Distinct individuals
The lives of French-Canadians in the province of Quebec have historically revolved around family, church, and community. Their history revolves around quest of a distinct group of people securing a living through demanding physical labour and dealing with extreme hardships resulting from living in a harsh and unforgiving land. The teachings of their church praised the efforts of the pioneers who endured such extreme hardships and who succeeded in making a life for themselves, their families and their fellow pioneers in this challenging environment. Their cultural values included fluency in the French language, obedience to the teachings of the Catholic faith, a large number of siblings, being part of large extended families and close-knit communities, as well as co-operation and group solidarity during times of crisis. These common values became the foundation of what today is perceived as the distinctness of Quebec's cultural heritage.

Winter's Other World: Masquerades and Mystery in Quebec
Article # : Section : CULTURE Issue Date : 426 Words Author : Patrice Halley
Patrice Halley is a freelance photographer associated with Photographers Aspen in Colorado. This essay is based upon material developed while Halley was on assignment for L'Actualite, a French weekly published in Quebec.
Tourists invade this small island during the summer season but are often horrified at the prospect of being caught here over the winter. "Oh, my God! You must be so bored!" they gasp.
"Absolutely not!" responds Bibiane Bernier V?ina, one of the residents. "We do not have enough time to do everything we would like."
Indeed, much of the winter is spent preparing for mi-careme (mid-Lent), a medieval French tradition lost almost everywhere else but still kept by the people of L'Isle-aux-Grues. Mi-careme is also held in two other remote Quebec communities: Natashquan, a native village on the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River, and Cheticamp, an Acadian community. But the most inventive costumes are made on L'Isle-aux-Grues.

In Detail The flag of Quebec , called the , was adopted by the provincial government of Maurice Duplessis and first flown on January 21, 1948, at the National Assembly in Quebec City. The takes its fleurs de lis from the banner of the king of France, and its blue field and white cross from the ancient national flag of the same country. The desire of French-Canadians in the province for a distinctive flag is an old one. Other flags that had been used included the Patriotes flag, a horizontal green, white, and red tricolor, which became the flag of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste; as well as the French tricolor.

Quebec
Bordered by Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and some American States, Quebec has an area of 1,450,680 square kilometres, making it the largest of Canada's provinces. The St. Lawrence River, the province's dominant geographical feature, links the Atlantic Ocean with the Great Lakes. The St. Lawrence lowlands are dotted with more than a million lakes and rivers and Quebec's forests are some of the largest in the world. Quebec was originally inhabited by Algonquin and Iroquois Aboriginal people. The northern part of the province was, and still is, inhabited by the Inuit. The European history of Quebec began with the arrival of the French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534. The thriving fur trade brought many French and British colonists. Founded in 1608, Quebec City became the capital of New France. During the French regime, the fortified city was an important centre of trade and development. The French-English rivalry in North America culminated with the Seven Years' War which saw the fall of Quebec City to British forces in 1759. New France then became a colony of Britain. In 1791, the colony was divided in two to create Lower Canada (Quebec) and Upper Canada (now Ontario). In 1867, Quebec became a founding member of the new Dominion of Canada. Throughout Quebec's history, the survival of the French culture has been central to the concerns of Quebeckers. It reflects Quebec's distinct place in the Canadian Confederation and gives Canada its bilingual character and cultural richness. French continues to be the dominant language in the province.
