Society of Friends - Quakers General Information The Society of Friends, commonly called Quakers, is a body of Christians that originated in 17th century England under George Fox. In 1988 the society had 200,260 members, with heavy concentrations in the United States (109,000), East Africa (45,000) and Great Britain (18,000). Quakers unite in affirming the immediacy of Christ's teaching; they hold that believers receive divine guidance from an inward light, without the aid of intermediaries or external rites. Meetings for worship can be silent, without ritual or professional clergy, or programmed, in which a minister officiates. Although their antecedents lie in English Puritanism and in the Anabaptist movement, the Society of Friends was formed during the English Civil War. Around 1652, George Fox began preaching that since there was "that of God in every man," a formal church structure and educated ministry were unnecessary. His first converts spread their faith throughout England, denouncing what they saw as social and spiritual compromises and calling individuals to an inward experience of God. In spite of schism and persecution, the new movement expanded during the Puritan Commonwealth (1649 - 60) and after the restoration of the monarchy (1660). Quakers!! Species: The Quaker parrot, also known as the Quaker parakeet, also known as the Monk parrot or parakeet. Scientifically known as Myiopsitta monachus. Origin: South America, including parts of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia and Uruguay (am I missing any here?). Escaped, feral birds have also established themselves in parts of the US, particularly in Florida, but also in scattered cities as far north as Chicago and New York. Size: Around 11"; weight range is 85-150 grams, but the "average" Quaker is about 90-120 grams. Quakers are about the size of a large cockatiel, but have a stockier build. Life span: Barring accident or disease, a Quaker can be expected to live around 20-30 years. Quaker legalities: While it seems hard to believe, Quakers are actually illegal in some areas! This is due to a fear that feral Quakers will harm native wildlife or become an agricultural pest. To some, this is a very legitimate fear, as non-native sparrows and starlings have certainly harmed native birds and become nation-wide pests, and Quakers in their native South America eat and damage crops. To others, both these fears are completely unfounded as Quakers are not likely to survive beyond the cities where they have established themselves, because they rely upon humans for food. Regardless, some states have outlawed Quakers, and others require a permit or have certain restrictions. Make sure to read up and research your local laws before beginning your search for a Quaker! BREEDING BLUE QUAKERS By Linda Greeson About five years ago I had a telephone call from a local bird breeder, a long acquaintance of mine, asking if I would be interested in seeing some Blue Quakers he had for sale. Was I ever interested! That was the understatement of the year. I had long been looking for some of the blue mutation to add to my large flock of normal greens. The only specimen I had actually seen was a drab,puny little bird in a cage of equally puny, sick looking normals at a whloesaler's. My reply to his question as to when would be a convenient time was "Right now!" Over coffee at my kitchen bar, with a carrier cage of four beautiful Blue Quakers between us, the owner told me his tragic story. His only son had recently been killed in an accident and he had found himself unable to shake his deep depression. He had sold all of his other birds in preparation for moving to another part of the country. He hoped that a complete change of scene would help him to adjust. He treasured these Blues and said that he wanted to be sure that they would go to a breeder who would care for them properly and institute a good breeding program. The birds had been imported from Holland and no start had been made in setting them up for breeding. These Quakers were a soft, powder blue with silver cheeks, throats, and upper breasts. They looked plump and healthy. The price of $5000, although it would strain my budget, was a fair one. I was soon the proud and happy owner of four Blue Quakers.

MY FAVORITES - THE QUAKERS by Linda Greeson Over the years many species of parrots have found their homes in our aviaries. I am constantly falling in love with yet another variety, but the place my Quakers hold as my all time favorite has never been threatened. We still today have one of our first hand fed Quaker babies presiding over our family room, and he is absolutely charming. His talking ability rivals that of our pet African Gray. He is a happy, sweet little bird, always ready to play or lie upside down in the palm of my hand, laughing and talking all the while. Fortunately, a Quakers' life span is twenty five to thirty years, my grandchildren can grow up to enjoy this little fellow as much as my children did. SPECIES The Quakers are also referred to as Monk Parakeets, Gray Breasted Parakeets,or Green Parakeets. Their Genus is Myiopsitta and there are four recognized sub-species. The differences between them are mainly in size and variations in intensity of color. M. Monachus Monachus, the most commonly available species, is a medium sized bird about eleven to twelve inches in length. The upper parts of the bird are almost all green, medium green on the back and brighter green on the wings and tail. The lores, cheeks, and throat are grey, merging into pale gray, white tipped breast feathers which merge into a grayish, olive green lower abdomen. The feather edges on the chest are very distinct, giving the grey area a scaled appearance. There is a suffusion of yellow on the thighs and under parts. The flight feathers are blue, edged with black. The under wing coverts are pale gray and pale bluish. The tail is long and narrow, green slightly tinged with blue.
