  • Miscellaneous Quadratic Equations Solved by Factoring.
This segment covers a variety of equations, involving various previously studied algebraic expressions, which are reducible to quadratic equations which can then be solved by factoring. This segment also covers the method of solving equations by substituting new symbols for expressions which appear repeatedly in the same equation.
  • Solving Quadratic Equations by Completing the Square.
This segment covers the solution of quadratic equations in which the unknowns can be collected into a single term which is the square of a binomial and then are solvable directly by roots. The technique of completing the square is covered to show that the preceding form can always be obtained.
  • Solving Quadratic Equations by the Quadratic Formula.
This segment covers the quadratic formula and its use in solving quadratic equations. This segment also covers the rearrangement of any quadratic into standard form to facilitate identification of appropriate coefficients as to their proper place in the quadratic formula for computation of solutions.

Lesson pages: The Formula explained, The Discriminant: solutions and graphs The Formula explained Often, the simplest way to solve " ax bx c " for the value of x is to factor the quadratic , set each factor equal to zero, and then solve each factor. But sometimes the quadratic is too messy, or it doesn't factor at all, or you just don't feel like factoring. So, while factoring may not always be successful, the Quadratic Formula can always find the solution. The Quadratic Formula uses the " a ", " b ", and " c " from " ax bx c ", where " a ", " b ", and " c " are just numbers. The Formula is derived from the process of completing the square, and is formally stated as:
For ax bx c , the value of x is given by:
Note that, for the Formula to work, you

Quadratic Equation
A quadratic equation is a second-order polynomial equation in a single variable x
with Because it is a second-order polynomial equation , the fundamental theorem of algebra guarantees that it has two solutions. These solutions may be both real , or both complex The roots x can be found by completing the square
Solving for x then gives

Recommended Books The three types of quadratic equations Every quadratic equation describes a parabola, which looks like this graph. The graph looks a little like a cup, and the bottom of the cup is called the vertex . The mouth of the cup keeps getting larger to infinity. For the most part, we will be interested in the region around the vertex. There are three important cases of quadratics depending on where the graph crosses the x-axis (these points are called roots or zeros of the equation). In case I, two distinct, real roots, the vertex lies on the opposite side of the x-axis from the rest of the graph and so the curve must cross the x-axis exactly twice. One can see exactly where the roots are from the graph, and they are clearly real numbers. Analytically, this case corresponds to the portion of the quadratic formula under the radical (the discriminant ) being strictly positive: Case I, two real, distinct roots

A knowledge of the manipulation of algebraic equations is essential to the successful working of many chemical problems . This page is a brief summary of the principles necessary for an understanding of the process.
Number Theory:
First we must cover some aspects of number theory, That is, how numbers are defined in general and how they are manipulated. Algebra mostly concerns itself with signed real numbers. A signed real number can be represented as a point on a line stretching infinitely both ways from the zero point. A number has magnitude which is denoted by the distance of its point from zero. It also has a sign which is denoted by the direction the point lies from zero. Points to the right of zero represent positive numbers, while points to the left of zero represent negative numbers. A positive number is indicated by a + sign before the number (e. g.. +5, +4.35) or more often by the absence of a sign(5, 4.35). Negative numbers are indicated by a - sign before the number (-3, -7.8). The Number Line
Here are some things you must know about signed real numbers:
1. Multiplying a number by -1 negates it, i. e. changes its sign:

Quadratic equation
Quadratic equation. Reduced quadratic equation.
Non-reduced quadratic equation. Pure quadratic equation. A quadratic equation
is an algebraic equation of the second degree: ax + bx + c = where a, b, c – the given numerical or literal coefficients , x – an unknown.
If a = 0, then this equation becomes a linear one. Therefore, we’ll consider here only a 0. So, it is possible to divide all terms of the equation by a and then we receive: x + px + q = , where p=b/a, q=c/a . This quadratic equation is called a reduced one. The equation (1) is called a non-reduced quadratic equation. If b or c (or both) is equal to zero, then this equation is called a pure one. The examples of pure quadratic equations are following: x x x x Back Home About us Links to us ... Dr. Yury Berengard

Unit Plan for Quadratic Equations Curriculum Unit Plan Mathematics Eleventh Grade Algebra 2 Unit 5: Quadratic Equations Abstract In this unit students learn the nature of quadratic functions and their applications in practical situations. They learn to write and interpret an algebraic model for quadratic relationships. Students solve quadratic equations using varied approaches, such as graphing, factoring, completing the square, and the quadratic formula. They learn connections between algebraic and geometric representations of quadratic equations. Students explore practical applications of quadratic models (e.g., the relationship between speed and braking distance, the flight of a ball) using the graph of the function and its discriminant to determine the number and nature of solutions. To allow all quadratic equations to have solutions, students are introduced to complex numbers. Solve, i.e., find the values of x which make this equation true (equal to zero). You should that the roots of this equation are imaginary numbers , and that the disriminant is zero. Experiment with the solutions to a variety of quadratic functions , by changing the values of the the multiplying terms. There are two roots to the equation above because the highest order term is x squared . When you first began to solve quadratic equations, you probably learned to factor the quadratic and then read the solutions to the equation directly from the factorization, which in this case would have two terms. This method is only useful when the quadratic can be factored easily. Machine computations will help out: factor the following quadratics with the help of the computer algebra worksheets, and compare the results with numerically computed roots. x^2+2*x-8=0
x^2-x+2=0
a*x^2+b*x+c=0
4*x^2-x-2=0 (try changing the 4 to a 1. Try other combinations of coefficients...)
