Question
How do I start to solve the equation
Answer Hello Kim, Two ways of doing this that are OK... 1. expand the left hand side to get: 49t^2+84t+36=19 then 49t^2+84t+17=0, and now use the quadratic formula. OR 2. just take the square root of both sides: 7t+6="+ or - "sqrt(19) 7t=-6"+ or -"sqrt(19) thus, t=[-6"+ or -"sqrt(19)]/7 OK? TTYL, Abe Rate this Answer Was this answer helpful? So far we have looked at methods for solving equations where the unknown expression x has one solution, however equations also exist where x can have more than one solution. One such instance is a quadratic equation and here this is described. Quadratic equations are often in the form:
ax + bx + c =

Where a, b and c are numerical values. In a single equation with one unknown, such as dealt with thus far, it is normally possible to calculate x , however as quadratic equations contain an x term, then there will commonly be two values of x that satisfy this equation. A quadratic equation can also be called a trinomial, in other words a 3 termed expression.
Looking at the equation; this can be identified as a quadratic equation as the highest power of x is i.e. x , and the general format given above is followed. There are three methods by which quadratic equations can be solved.

Quadratic equations
Up to now you've dealt with equations and expressions involving just x, in this section we'll move onto solving things which have x in them. All quadratic equations can be arranged in the form , and a b c are all constants. Now let's look at some examples: Rearrange the following equations in the form a x b x c Solution for (1): Solution for (2): Note that in the last step, both side is multiplied by -1, to make the term positive, so that the solving of the equation would be easier. edit
Factorization
Factorization is the most common way to solve quadratic equations. Let us consider again the first example above: x x x We have already simplified the equation into x x Now, we want to factorize the equation - that is to say, get it into a form like: x + something)( x + something) = Look at the number term c. In this example, it is -3. Now, think what two numbers will multiply together to give -3. Either 3 and -1, or -3 and 1. But we also need to get the x term correct (here, b=2). In fact, we need our two factors of c to add together to make b. And (-3)+(1)=-2. So, we have found our 'somethings': they are -3 and 1. Let's fill them in.
