It is not capable of compiling standalone executables. The source code is compiled to an intermediate form within the integrated development environment , and this intermediate form is immediately executed (interpreted) on demand within the IDE. It was intended as a replacement for GWBASIC , and was shipped together with MS-DOS 5.0 and higher, including Windows 95 . It was based on the earlier QuickBASIC 4.5 compiler but without QuickBASIC's compiler and linker elements. Microsoft stopped shipping QBasic with later versions of Windows. Lab: Computer Programming with QBASIC
Background
In the early days of computers, most people wrote and ran their own programs. This led to the conclusion that everybody that was going to use a computer needed to learn how to program. Courses like "Computers and Society" were substantially about programming. Now, however, it is clear that most people who use computers are not programmers, but use programs (applications) written by others; programs such as word processors, spreadsheets and database programs. Today, some of these can involve programming. Here, building formulae in Excel, you have done some programming. And even major word processors such as Microsoft Word contain built-in programming languages for customizing work. Usually, however, anything substantial is done by specialists within an organization. It can still help to understand something about programming. But this is nowhere near the amount of programming that was done to create the applications. Here you will examine some pre-written programs to see how they work, using the QBASIC programming language. DOS always came with a built-in programming language. Earlier DOS versions came with GWBASIC, but later, QBASIC became the standard. Early versions of Windows came with a programming language, but starting with Windows 95, programming languages became for-sale add-ons.

Chapter One
Introduction
Welcome to Basic Basic, a grouping of lessons on how to use the QBasic programming language. If you are reading this, then it is most likely that you want to learn how to program in QBasic, and have several questions. I hope to answer all of them and more in this book. First, you may be wondering what QBasic exactly is. Well, there is a simple answer - QBasic is a programming language written for computers back in 1975, by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, and has been the accepted standard ever since. Why? Because of its ease of use

Programming The Parallel Port In QBasic
If you have built any of the interfaces on my circuits page and now want to know how to actually make use of them, this page is for you. This is a simple introduction to programming the parallel port in QBasic, QuickBasic or similar language. Note that most of the concepts in this page can also be applied to GWBASIC. If you are interested in using Visual Basic to control the port, see Programming The Parallel Port In Visual Basic . What this document will not do is give you lots of details on using bi-directional ports, DMA and other advanced topics. This document assumes that you are familiar with the basic functions of BASIC itself. The parallel port is made up of three different sections. These are the data lines control lines and status lines . There are 8 data lines, and they are the primary means of getting information out of the port. In simple projects, you will be concentrating mostly on the data lines. The control lines are another 4 outputs. They are meant to provide control signals to the printer (such as form feed or initialize). The status lines are a standard parallel port's only inputs. There are 5 of them. They were meant to allow the printer to communicate things such as error, paper out and busy to the PC. Each section is accessed by it's own address and will act independently from the rest. This is almost as if they were different ports. The addresses are as follows:

Preparing Students for a Technological Future Programming With QBASIC Return to Mr. Webster's Introduction to Computer Class Science Class Home Page Our Introduction to Computer Science class was actively involved in programming using the QBASIC programming language. QBASIC is a popular version of the high-level language BASIC that ships as a supplement to MS-DOS. We used the textbook Structured Basic , by James Clark and William Drum, published by South-Western Publishing Co. Students in the class learned the building blocks of programming in QBASIC. They learned to write structured programs that utilize control structures. A few students in the class became proficient enough with BASIC to leap frog past the class to the last chapter of the textbook on graphics. These students developed some interesting programs that utilized graphics techniques.
  • One of the premier student programmers in our class was Jamey Holcombe , a young man with a real sense of how to solve programming problems. Jamey developed a variety of screen saver like programs. He then developed a menu style program so that the user can select and run the individual programs. His screen savers used a variety of geometric designs. Jamey says:

57. The QP7 Programming Page: Qbasic Tutorial
You have a good knowledge of what qbasic is about. Now on to some more advanced programming! Graphics programming in qbasic can get fairly complex.
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Bay/5707/qbasic.html
This tutorial is also available in .TXT format TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION
In the early days of programming, it was usually the scientific elite doing the programming and they were usually trained above and beyond the average American to do their programming work. It was not until 1964 at Dartsmouth college that the Beginner' s All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code would be introduced more commonly known as BASIC. Using common English to perform processor tasks, BASIC became quickly popular, although it was disliked by programmers of more "low-level" languages such as assem bly and FORTRAN. In 1985 Microsoft released their own version of BASIC called QBasic with their MS-DOS 5.0 operating system. Since then, nearly every PC user owns their own copy of QBasic, making it a widely known language. QBasic is a very simple language to pick up, and yet it can accomplish a great deal. Granted you will probably never write Doom or Word Perfect with QBasic, but it has it's strong points. One of them is to introduce people to programming without having to worry about the internal workings of the computer. It's simple to create games, business applications, simple databases, and graphics. The best aspect of the language is it's close resemblance to English. This small tutorial introduces the simple concepts of programming to get you started, so if you already know another language or are already familiar with programming, you may want to skim through the first couple sections. Good luck!
