ISALC : ESL 382: Computer Applications - Spring 1998 Culture Capsules: People, Places, and Processes Doha Nasser Hi everybody!! I'm Nasser Al-Khalaf. I'm from Qatar in the Middle East. I was born in Doha. Doha is the capital of Qatar. It's a very nice city and has an old history. Also , anybody can see her history through the old houses that are still standing or through the museum of Qatar . People in Doha used to have a very difficult life; the young and the old people had to go away from their family to the sea for four months at least , searching for pearls and catching fish , but now after they found oil in Qatar , nobody does this hard work, only some people do it as their hobby. Doha has started to develop beautiful sights. One of the beautiful places in Doha is the seaside, which is called "The Cornish." Many people like to walk on the "Cornish" with the trees, flowers and the green grass on your left and the smooth blue sea, with a clear blue sky on your right. In front of the "Cornish" there are two palaces, the big old one, and the new palace of the President, which is shining there all night long. This palace is where the President, "Hammed bin khalifa Al Thani" lives with his son

Article 27 February 2003 Printer-friendly version Gulf War meets Culture War by Brendan O'Neill
What is the proper way to address a Muslim woman? Is it okay to show the soles of your feet in an Arab state? What about offensive tattoos - taboo or not taboo? And when eating in a Qatari restaurant, do you use your left hand to pick up food, or your right…?
These are some of the heated issues being discussed by military men in and around the Gulf. As the rest of world wonders when the war against Iraq will start, some American commanders have been assigned a much more basic task: how to make their troops more culturally aware and less macho, and ensure that they behave like 'diplomat-warriors' for our new humanitarian age instead of like the outright 'warriors' of old. In Qatar, where thousands of US troops are stationed in preparation for invading Iraq, commanders have set up a 'cultural boot camp' to teach their charges about local life. Officers can sign up for 'five-day courses that teach the basics of Arab culture', enabling them to 'blend in and learn while we're here' (1). On board the US Navy ships gathered in the Gulf, commanders have declared war…on offensive tattoos. A new Navy rule has banned 'tattoos/body art/brands that are excessive, obscene, sexually explicit or advocate or symbolise sex, gender, racial, religious, ethnic or national origin discrimination' (2).

    The Persian Gulf
By Kevin Filan Qatar Bahrain Kuwait Oman Qatar ... Yemen For most of recorded history, the residents of Qatar eked out a meager living from the pearl beds along their coastline, mainly in the northern town of Zubara. There was little else to recommend Qatar; most of the land in this peninsular region was dry, gravelly desert which was not only unsuited for agriculture but which could barely support any vegetation at all. Even by the standards of the pre-oil Gulf the region was shockingly poor… especially when the introduction of cultured pearls devastated the pearling industry. But just when things looked hopeless, Qatar discovered that it sat atop vast reserves of oil and natural gas. Today Qatar is still struggling to come to terms with that newfound prosperity, and with various border disputes between its neighbors.
Qatar does not have an elected government, and rights of assembly and protest are restricted. In 1998 the Education Minister, Abdulrahman Al-Nuaimi, distributed a letter criticizing Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani for his decision to allow women to vote and hold office in the (advisory) municipal council. Al-Nuaimi was arrested and at last report remains in detention.

For Middle East, North Africa, Arab and regional information visit Arab Countries Qatar , officially State of Qatar, independent emirate (1995 est. pop. 534,000), 4,400 sq mi (11,400 sq km), on a largely barren peninsula in the Persian Gulf, bordering Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (S). The capital is Doha. The economy of Qatar is dominated by oil and natural gas, which accounts for 70% of export income. Oil and gas revenues have been used to diversify the economy, including the development of chemicals, steel, cement, and fertilizer industries and banking. A minority (20%) of the population are Qataris (Arabs of the Wahhabi sect of Islam); the rest are largely other Arabs, Pakistanis, Indians, and Iranians. Arabic is the official language, but English is also widely spoken. The country is a monarchy. History
Qatar was ruled by Bahrain from the 1700s until the mid-1800s, when Great Britain and the Ottoman Empire began vying for control of the peninsula. It was a British protectorate from 1916 until 1971, when it became independent. In the 1980s and 90s Qatar had territorial disputes with Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. During the Persian Gulf War (1991) international coalition forces were deployed on Qatari soil. The present emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, came to power in 1995 after ousting his father. In the late 1990s Sheikh Hamad eased press censorship and promoted ties with Iran and Israel. Since 2001 Qatar has allowed U.S. use of the Al Udeid air base, and the headquarters for the U.S. invasion of Iraq (2003) were in the country.
