Introduction
It only began issuing tourist visas in 1989, but after a slow start Qatar has begun to reap the benefits of its new openness. Visitors are welcomed to a land of glitzy new hotels, towering sand dunes, ancient rock carvings and distinctive architecture. Best known for being unknown, Qatar has a habit of falling off the world's radar. Most foreign maps of Arabia drawn before the 19th century don't show the Qatar peninsula, and most people in the West don't even know where it is. Fewer still can pronounce it (somewhere between 'cutter' and 'gutter'). Full country name: State of Qatar Area: 11,400 sq km Population: People: Arab 40%, Pakistani 18%, Indian 18%, Iranian 10% Language: Arabic, English, Urdu Religion: Islam Government: traditional monarchy Head of State: Emir Shaikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani
GDP: US$12 billion GDP per capita: US$17,100 Annual Growth: Inflation: Major Industries: Oil production and refining, fertilisers, petrochemicals, steel, cement Major Trading Partners: Japan, EU, Singapore, South Korea

Doha - C ulture Capital of Qatar with 350,000 inhabitants. Doha lies on the eastern side of the peninsula of Qatar, and is by far the largest city of the country, holding more than half of the inhabitants. The economical bas of Doha is petroleum exports, shrimp processing, finances, and administration. There is one university, the University of Qatar that was founded in 1973. The National Museum was opened in 1975. The Government House, from 1969, is one of the most prominent landmarks. A Muslim dominance, with 93% sunni Muslims. Christians are the second largest group with 6% of the population. Hindus represent 1% of the population, while there is a small bahai community of 0,2% of Qatar's total population. The clear majority of Qataris belong to the wahhabi tradition of today's Saudi Arabia but their branch is not as strict in some fields as what is seen in Saudi Arabia. Only 25% of the population of Qatar is Qataris. They are mostly of Najdi ancestry, while large groups are of Persian descent. Of the foreigners most come from India and Pakistan, and other Arab countries, like Egypt. British citizens principally represent westerners. Attempts to industrialized and diversify the economy has had only limited success. Most of the industry activity is located around Umm Said. Industries include cement, fertilizers, steel and petroleum. The steel production has been a success, and has run with a profit for the last 10 years. For foreign investors, Qatar is offering tax holidays, of up to 12 years, and foreign companies are allowed to be 100% foreign owned. There are strict regulations on foreign ownership in property.

30. QATAR INFO - Culture
qatar or living here affords an excellent opportunity to expatriates to expand theircultural horizons by discovering and learning more about this culture .
http://www.qatar-info.com/general/culture.htm
Volumes could be written about traditional Arab culture, as practised in the Gulf region (and, indeed, have been); we, however, are only able to give a glimpse of the major features. Hospitality is a major feature of Arab culture and society. Guests must always be made welcome and be offered refreshment as a matter of course. Thus, you are likely to be offered Arabic or cardamon coffee or a small cup of tea upon arrival at a Qatari host, be it in his home or office. This drink is traditionally served in a very small cup. It is rude to refuse, but not necessary to indulge in more than one cup, if you don't like the taste. During the season, or at night during Ramadhan, you may also be offered fresh dates, which are wonderful. Most Qataris receive guests at home in a majlis, or reception area. In a tradition, dating back to bedoiun customs, guests are often seated at floor level on large cushions. Nowadays, sofas may be more normal, but do not be surprised if you come across the former arrangement. Like many social events, majlis receptions are nearly always single sex (male on the whole) and women are not present. This leads on to a cultural norm that is often striking for the Western visitor. The majority of socialising in the Gulf is practised among men or women; rarely both at the same time. This separation of the sexes extends to all sorts of areas, including places of prayer, government offices (for example, immigration, fingerprinting, medical checks etc., lifts in public places) and even shops. It is simply not the norm for men and women to mix in society. Whatever you may think of this custom, it is widespread, highly traditional and unlikely to change in the foreseeable future. If you are invited into a Qatari home, unless specifically requested to do so, do not therefore take your wife. She may be invited separately by the women of the house, and will spend time with them in separate quarters, but to appear with a woman in a male majlis causes embarrassment on both sides.

US$15 billion investment in prestigious resorts, luxury hotels, cultural projects, international sports facilities and new international gateway
May 1, 2004
DOHA – The State of Qatar — the heart of the Arabian Gulf — has unveiled an ambitious new tourism masterplan that will guide a US$15 billion investment into an array of prestigious projects and establish Qatar as a high quality destination for cultural tourism, beach resorts, shopping, lifestyle, business and sports events.
Qatar Tourism Authority Chairman and Qatar Airways’ Chief Executive Officer Mr Akbar Al Baker unveiled the new Qatar Tourism Masterplan today, in front of the world’s tourism industry leaders and a large international media contingent at the Fourth Global Travel and Tourism Summit in Doha. Mr Al Baker was joined by World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) Chairman Mr Vincent Wolfington and his President Mr Jean-Claude Baumgarten.
“The initiatives in this new tourism masterplan will position Qatar as a leading high-quality tourism destination, in accord with the forward thinking vision of our country’s leader, His Highness the Emir, Shiekh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani,” said Mr Al Baker.

DOHA – Lebanese singing legend Majida Al Roumi arrived last night at Doha International Airport on Qatar Airways flight QR423 from Beirut.
Qatar Airways’ Chief Executive Mr. Akbar Al Baker commented on the occasion:
“We are very proud that stars of the calibre of Majida Al Roumi choose to fly Qatar Airways.
“Being Qatar’s national carrier, it is a great pleasure for Qatar Airways to be able to bring this Arabic star into our country to delight the people with her performance. “Majida Al Roumi’s career has spanned decades of great success, starting from a young age singing with her equally famous father Halim Al Roumi, who was privileged to have performed with the legendary Farouz, to performing in venues all over the world. “Qatar is opening its doors not only to tourism, conferences and major sports events, but increasingly to international culture. The Doha Cultural Festival is a great asset to Qatar and its people and we are proud to be playing our part. “Inviting a variety of artists, singers and actors from all over the world and different parts of the Middle East to Qatar, will not only bring a lot of enjoyment and entertainment to the people, but will also enhance cultural understanding and appreciation amongst the residents of Qatar.
