Python reticulatus
Albino Reticulated python (tyrosinase positive) Common name: Reticulated python
Scientific name: Python reticulatus
Other common names: none in common use. Rarely one sees the old name of "regal python" to refer to reticulatus.
Super Tiger Reticulated python General description: The largest of the pythons, this is a long and relatively slender snake. Large specimens can attain considerable mass and bulk, specimens over 300 pounds are reported. The record length slightly exceeds 33 feet. Retics (as they are known) have big heads that are distinctly wider than the necks. Most specimens have orange eyes. Most specimens have pale dorsal blotches on the back, and smaller white lateral blotches high on the sides. This is a highly iridescent species. This is an extremely variable species with considerable geographic variation in appearance. There have been more unique snakes with unusual and anomalous appearances in this species than any other.
Average adult size: Distribution: This is the most widespread python species in the world. Its distribution includes coastal Southeast Asia, from Burma and the Nicobar Island east to Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia, and most of the islands of the Philippines and Indonesia. The species is not known to occur on New Guinea, but does occur on most or all of the Moluccan islands.

(9.9 meters)! The longest Reticulated Python in the United States ( wild-caught This python can be found in southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands; Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Ceram, Timor, Malay Peninsula and the Philippines. The habitat in which it lives are rainforests and woodlands; near streams and lakes. The diet consists of mammals, birds and some reptiles. wild-caught from Bangkok, Thailand or from central Western Malaysia. Today, most wild-caught Reticulated Pythons are taken out of their natural habitats in Indonesia, with extreme variations in temperament! Quick striking, the 'retic' can give a slashing bite that can severe arteries and tendons. These animals are meant to be in the wilds of their native homelands, not stuck in prisons where they lash out at the person who obtained them. The reason the Reticulated Python was brought into the Refuge was that he was one of those snakes you hear about crawling up someone's toilet in an apartment. A lady heard shampoo bottles dropping off the shelf in her bathroom and went to check out what was happening. Much to her and the snakes surprise, they met each other. The snake was totally skin and bones and covered with mites when the S.P.C.A. brought him to the Refuge. He had been searching for food for some time, but eats his fill now. AND yes, he has quite an attitude!

Carpet Python - Morelia spilota sp.
[Back to Snake Care Sheets]
General Information D istribution
Various subspecies of this snake are found throughout most of Australia and New Guinea. The more brightly coloured specimens (referred to as 'Jungle Carpets') are found in northern Australia. While darker, but still attractive specimens are found in mostly in the central and southern parts of its habitat. Habitat Carpet pythons are found in a variety of different habitats ranging from grasslands and wooded savannahs as with the Southern Carpet Python (Morelia spilota imbricata) to the tree perches of the Jungle and Coastal Carpet pythons (Morelia spilota cheynei and mcdowelli) in heavily forested Australian subtropical rainforests. Adult Size The smallest carpet python is the Jungle Carpet, which is typically between 140 cm and 200 cm (4' 6" to 6' 6"). Southwestern Carpets generally reach lengths of 170 cm to 190 cm (5' 6" to 6' 3"), and Coastal carpets between 180 and 250cm (6' to 8') . However, Coastal carpets have been known to reach lengths of 14 feet. Hatchling carpets of the three species listed above have a total length of approximately 42 cm. Temperament As with most partially arboreal snakes, carpets can be a little high strung. When young, carpet pythons are highly sensitive to potential threats. Translation, you may get bitten a few times when the animal is young. As time passes, you will learn to 'read' the snake's reaction to you and it will learn that you are not a threat. Translation, you won't get bitten as often!!!!

RETICULATED PYTHON DIFFICULTY LEVEL Keeper should have previous experience with larger boids and be comfortable with their care and handling. Not a suitable beginners snake. Reticulated pythons are usually what their keeper has made them. If properly kept by a knowledgeable owner they behave well and are a spectacular sight as a large tame python. DIET Mice, rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits. OTHER MORPHS Normal, Yellow Head, Calico, Albino, Tiger, Super Tiger, Jaguar and island forms. BREEDING Males breed at 7 - 9' and females 11'+. Breeding season in captivity: September - March. Stop all feeding at this time. Animals should have excellent weight and be established before any breeding is attempted. Breeding may be induced by reducing daytime photo periods to 8 - 10 hours and dropping nighttime temperatures into the mid 70's. Introduce the female into the males cage, never house two adult males together the injuries can be horrific.Careful when handling males in breeding season. Misting the animals with water may be beneficial. Lays 25 - 80+ eggs, maternally incubates. Incubation temperature 88 - 90F(optimal), 80-90 days to hatch. {Burmese python}, Scientific name python molarus bivittatus Diet in the wild Rabbits, mice, rats, amphibians, lizards, other snakes, birds, and other mammals
http://www.whozoo.org/students/stamoo/pythonhtml.html
Burmese python  Scientific name:
Python molarus bivittatus Range: Old World, especially in India Habitat : Grassland to "open jungle"  Status : Threatened Diet in the wild: Rabbits, mice, rats, amphibians, lizards, other snakes, birds, and other mammals Diet in the zoo: Rats, mice, rabbits, domestic pigs, and goats Location in the zoo: Herpetarium Physical description: General information Burmese pythons breed early in the spring months. The females lay 12-100 eggs in March or April. After they lay the eggs, they gather them all together and coil around them to incubate them. They will lay coiled around the eggs until they hatch. "The female python is the only snake that can raise its own body temperature". While they are keeping the eggs warm, the muscles will tremble and these movements help the female to increase the temperature around the eggs. They will never leave the eggs to eat. Once the baby pythons are hatched, they must learn to exist alone and fend for themselves. Burmese pythons have been extensively studied under captive conditions. It has been found that they are able to grow to sexual maturity very quickly in captivity. Herpetoculturists feed them in the best conditions, and at the end of one year they are anywhere from 6 to 9 1/2 feet. At the end of a year and a half, they measure from 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 feet. Soon after this, they are bred and consequently, the rate of growth slows gradually down with each passing year. Sometimes, these pythons will all of a sudden start growing very quickly after a long span of slow growth. This has been attributed to the genetic background of the python as well as to how it has been bred along with its feeding habits.

Information on the largest snake in the world the reticulated python, better known as the anaconda.
http://unmuseum.mus.pa.us/bigsnake.htm
Big Snakes
The largest-known snake in the world is the Anaconda, or Eunectes murinus , of South America. It holds the world's record for size with one specimen, encountered by petroleum geologist in eastern Columbia in the 1944, measuring 37 1/2 feet in length. Somewhere deep in the southern swamps do they grow bigger? According to Colonel Percy H. Fawcett , a former British Army officer, surveyor and adventurer in the early 1900's, they do: We were drifting easily along on the sluggish current not far below the confluence of tigor and the Rio Negro when almost under the bow there appeared a triangular head and several feet of undulating body. It was a giant anaconda. I sprang for my rifle as the creature began to make its way up the bank, and hardly waiting to aim smashed a .44 soft-nosed bullet into its spine, ten feet below the wicked head. At once there was a flurry of foam, and several heavy thumps against the boat's keel, shaking us as though we had run on a snag... Fawcett describes how they stopped and examined the body. Though he had no ruler, he guessed the length of the creature at sixty-two feet with a twelve-inch diameter. "Such large specimens as this may not be common, but the trails in the swamps reach a width of six feet and support the statements of Indians and rubber pickers that the anaconda sometimes reaches an incredible size dwarfing that shot by me. The Brazilian Boundary Commission told me of one exceeding eighty feet in length!"

The African Rock Python is a large, constricting snake that lives in sub-Saharan Africa. The adult African Rock Python's main predator is man; it is killed for its beautiful skin, meat, and fat (used in tribal medicines). Other predators include crocodiles, badgers, and mongooses. The scientific name of the African Rock Python is Python sebae sebae Genus species , and subspecies Anatomy : Like all snakes, pythons are cold-blooded; they are the same temperature as the environment. They continue to grow all their lives, getting bigger and bigger each year. African Rock Python average 18 to 20 feet long, but can grow up to 28 feet (8.5 m) long. Their scaly skin glistens but is dry is to the touch. African Rock Pythons are tan with brown spots that have black outlines. A tan V-shape marks the face. The python smells using its tongue. This snake has has no fangs. It uses heat sensing organs in its upper and lower jaws to detect warm-blooded prey (like mammals). Hunting and Diet : Pythons are carnivores (meat-eaters). Pythons are not venomous, they kill by constricting (squeezing) the prey it until it can no longer breathe. Like all snakes, they swallow the prey whole, head first. The python's top and bottom jaws are attached to each other with stretchy ligaments, which let the snake swallow animals wider that itself. Snakes don't chew their food, it is digested by very strong acids in the snake's stomach. The African Rock Python eats monkeys, pigs, deer, small apes, birds, and other animals. After eating a large animal, the python needs no food for a long time, and may rest for weeks. In this engorged state, it is most vulnerable to attack by predators.

Snakes are a large group of reptiles; there are over 2,000 different species of snakes alive today. Snakes live in a variety of land and water habitats. The most snakes and the largest snakes are found in tropical rainforests . Snakes are found on every continent except Antarctica . There are no snakes native to Hawaii, Iceland, Ireland, or New Zealand. Anatomy : Snakes have a long, narrow body and scaly skin. They have no eyelids, no external ear openings, and no legs (although a few snakes, like boas and pythons, have vestigial hind legs). As they grow, snakes shed their old skin and the film that covers their eyes. Like other reptiles, snakes are cold-blooded.
