    History
Python is a very new language; in fact it was released by its designer, Guido Van Rossum, in February 1991 while working for CWI also known as Stichting Mathematisch Centrum. Many of Python's features originated from an interpreted language called ABC. Rossum wanted to correct some of ABC's problems and keep some of its features. At the time he was working on the Amoeba distributed operating system group and was looking for a scripting language with a syntax like ABC but with the access to the Amoeba system calls, so he decided to create a language that was generally extensible. Since he had some experience with using Modula-2+, he decided to talk with the designers of Modula-3. Modula-3 is the origin of the syntax and semantics used for exceptions, and some other Python features. In 1989, during the Christmas holidays, he decided to give it a try and design a language which he later called Python. Just in case you're wondering how the language got its name, well it's not from those dangerous reptiles. Python actually got is name from a BBC comedy series from the seventies "Monty Python's Flying Circus". The designer needed a name that was short, unique, and slightly mysterious. Since he was a fan of the show he thought this name was great.

The following has been tested and installed with the v0.16 images. First you need to get Python installed on your iPAQ. I have compiled python, libglade, libxml and pygtk. You can find both a /usr/local crams image and the binary sources I used to create the image from ftp://ftp.handhelds.org/pub/apps/arm/python. These files were configured and compiled on the handhelds.org skiffclusters. If you are not using /usr/local (/dev/flash6) for anything you can load my prepared usr.local-python.cramfs image onto your ipaq. /dev/flash6 is not used by the standard ipaq images released on handhelds.org. You can install usr.local-python.cramfs on your iPAQ in one of two ways:
    From the bootloader
  • use you terminal program to upload the usr.local-python.cramfs file.
  • From your iPAQ running Linux
  • Use your favorite terminal program to login as root.

Issue 73 Python Programming for Beginners Posted on Monday, May 01, 2000 by Jacek Artymiak If you want to outsmart the Spanish Inquisition, learn Python. This article is a practical introduction to writing non-trivial applications in Python. Despite what assembly code and C coders might tell us, high-level languages do have their place in every programmer's toolbox, and some of them are much more than a computer-science curiosity. Out of the many high-level languages we can choose from today, Python seems to be the most interesting for those who want to learn something new and do real work at the same time. Its no-nonsense implementation of object-oriented programming and its clean and easy-to-understand syntax make it a language that is

    Chapter 12
    Advanced Python and COM
In Chapter 5, Introduction to COM , we presented some basic material about Python and COM. If you have never used Python and COM together or are unfamiliar with basic COM concepts, you should review that chapter before continuing here. In this chapter we take a more technical look at COM and using Python from COM. We initially provide a discussion of COM itself and how it works; an understanding of which is necessary if you need to use advanced features of COM from Python. We then look at using COM objects from Python in more detail and finish with an in-depth discussion of implementing COM objects using Python.
    Advanced COM
In order to fully understand Python and COM, it is necessary to understand COM itself. Although Python hides many of the implementation details, understanding these details makes working with Python and COM much easier. If you want to see how to use Python to control COM objects such as Microsoft Word or Excel, you can jump directly to the section

A Primer on Python Metaclass Programming
by David Mertz This series of articles by David Mertz assumes readers have a familiarity with basic object-oriented programming concepts: inheritance, encapsulation, and polymorphism. We pick up where the basics leave off; how some "exotic" techniques can make applied programming tasks easier, more maintainable, and just plain more elegant. This series will primarily present examples in Python, but the concepts apply to other programming languages too. This first installment examines metaclasses . Just as ordinary instances (objects) are built out of classes, classes themselves are built out of metaclasses. Most of the time, you do not need to worry about the implicit metaclass (named

Python is an interpreted , interactive programming language created by Guido van Rossum , originally as a scripting language for Amoeba OS capable of making system calls . Philosophy
Python is a multi-paradigm language, like Perl and unlike Smalltalk or Haskell . This means that, rather than forcing coders to adopt one particular style of coding, it permits several. Object orientation structured programming functional programming Aspect oriented programming , and more recently, design by contract are all supported. Python is dynamically type-checked and uses garbage collection for memory management . The term " agile programming language " has recently come into vogue, applied mostly to Python. Popularized explicitly in contrast to Perl, Python has many similarities to that language. However, Python's designers reject Perl's exuberant syntax in favor of a more spare, less cluttered one. As with Perl, Python's developers expressly

      Gimp-Python
Gimp-Python is a package that allows people to write plug-ins for The Gimp in the Python programming language rather than Script-Fu (Scheme), Perl, Tcl or C. The newest version, 0.4, has support for both gimp 1.0 and gimp 1.1. Unlike previous versions, this one does not use Tkinter, but instead uses the PyGTK package which is a set of bindings for the GTK+ widget set . The reason for changing over from Tkinter was to get a more consistent look and feel, and for the extra widgets (color and font selectors for instance). Gimp-Python provides an almost complete wrapper for the libgimp plug-in library, including support for tiles and pixel regions. This means that you can use it to do just about everything that is possible in C, but you get all the benefits of python. You do not have to worry about freeing data structures, and there are some other benefits (such as tiles automatically having the dirty flag set when you modify them). As an example of this power, there is a translation of the whirl and pinch plug-in included with the package. The gimp-python wrapper for libgimp is an object oriented one, where many of the operations on images, drawables, channels and layers become methods or attributes of those particular types.
