I use a hot wire machine but still found the book to be quite helpful and very interesting reading. After all, pyrography is the art of "drawing with fire" and whatever tool is used, the function is the same. Pyrography can be traced back into ancient times. It became quite popular during the Victorian era when artists used a hot poker from the fireplace to draw designs on furniture. The art was sneeringly referred to as "poker work" but still became quite popular as tools were refined and engineered for a much finer work. Today's tools primarily fall into the two classes, solid point and hot wire. The author prefers the solid point and stresses the subtle differences in technique with an emphasis on her preference. The author begins with a brief background and introduction to Pyrography and quickly moves into an explanation of basic skills and exercises necessary to becoming accomplished in the art. These are followed with ten progressively difficult projects in which the author coaches the reader through. Each project is designed to build on the skills learned with the previous project without seeming to be repetitious. Ms Gregory is a skillful teacher and artist who knows her medium well and has accomplished her intent of providing a step-by-step book of instruction for learning the art of Pyrography.

Portrait of Michael Jordan by Vadim Grozavu, 2002 Pyrograph on wood panel Image courtesy of the artist From the capital city of Chisinau in the small country of Moldova in eastern Europe has emerged a new talent in the person of Vadim Grozavu , a young man who has already mastered the highly prized pyrographic technique of Photorealism Photorealism in paintings has always enjoyed admiration from certain groups of people. However, it seems a great many pyro art enthusiasts consider photorealism the ideal in pyrography. Perhaps it is because the very skill of using a pyro tool instead of a paintbrush to achieve such great and precise detail is extraordinaryonly a handful of pyrographic artists reach that level of skill. In part, it may also be because the medium is exotic in the art worldit is fascinating to realize that a person could burn an accurate likeness of a subject and at the same time produce what looks like a rich sepia photograph in wood. Portrait by Vadim Grozavu Pyrographic portrait on wood panel Image courtesy of the artist Taught by his dad when he was only a youngster, Vadim Grozavu has been working in this medium since 1986. Since that time, he has done a great number of pieces. One particularly large and impressive pyro work of his, on display in a kind of publicity center in downtown Chisinau, has benefited from a lot of public acclaim. Because his specialty is portraits, most of Vadim's work is done on commission, including, to his credit, the portrait of a young niece of a former president of Moldova.

Since childhood, Dawn has been fascinated by the beautiful patterns and colors and unique behavior of many different species of reptiles and amphibians. As a zoology major at the University of Georgia Athens, Dawn studied herpetology, which eventually led to her work as a volunteer at the Chattahooche Nature Center and exotic animal vetrinary technician. Over the years, Dawn has participated in wildlife rehabilitation, educational programs, and exotic animal medicine, not to mention owing a variety of herps, herself. Dawn's interest in art also began early with art classes and led to years of experimentation in different mediums and styles. Today, Dawn focuses much of her work on creating pyrography (woodburning) and watercolor paintings, but also paints with oil, acrylics, and gouache. Dawn travels with her artwork to both woodcarving and reptile shows as well as selling her work in galleries in the Kansas City area and Colorado Springs. Her realistic creations of reptile portraits have received numerous awards, including merit awards at some of the country's top wood shows. Two of Dawn's pieces, "Mother Crocodile" and "Timber Beauty", also appeared in the 2002 Cold Blooded Creations juried art show, which was held during the National Breeder's Reptile Show in Daytona, Florida.

And it all started like this...
Then Bill, my beloved, gave me a Peter Childs Pyrography machine for Christmas, that he'd bought from Simbles in Watford pattern book by Norma Gregory . Great presents - wonderful! I find the Peter Childs machine really easy to use I created several pieces of work in the first 3 months, first experimenting on some scrap wood, and then working on the various pieces of wood I could find around the garage.
The Unicorn's simple cartoon design gave me a chance to practise controlling the pen, and altering the colour of the burn.
Then, to practice fine lines and gain more control, I tried a Celtic Triangle knot of my own design, on some salvaged plywood sanded smooth with Bill's electric orbital sander (and good right arm!). I found that a good strong light (just like the one Bill used to have in his garage) was necessary, and a repetitive sweeping motion with the pen was ideal for long, smooth lines. The tip definitely has to be moving before it reaches the wood. It wasn't perfect, but I felt much more confident about using the machine. I was so pleased with this that I went on to make the Dozing Dragon , also from a design I found on the Internet, on another piece of plywood. I had trouble with the
