PYRAMIDS OF MEXICO
Deep within the jungles of Mexico and Guatemala and extending into the limestone shelf of the Yucatan peninsula lie the mysterious temples and pyramids of the Maya. While Europe was still in the midst of the Dark Ages, these amazing people had mapped the heavens, evolved the only true writing system native to the Americas and were masters of mathematics. They invented the calendars we use today. Without metal tools, beasts of burden or even the wheel they were able to construct vast cities across a huge jungle landscape with an amazing degree of architectural perfection and variety. Their legacy in stone, which has survived in a spectacular fashion at places such as Palenque, Tikal, Tulum, Chichen Itza, Copan and Uxmal, lives on as do the seven million descendants of the classic Maya civilization. The Maya are probably the best-known of the classical civilizations of Mesoamerica. Originating in the Yucatan around 2600 B.C., they rose to prominence around A.D. 250 in present-day southern Mexico, Guatemala, northern Belize and western Honduras. Building on the inherited inventions and ideas of earlier civilizations such as the Olmec, the Maya developed astronomy, calendrical systems and hieroglyphic writing. The Maya were noted as well for elaborate and highly decorated ceremonial architecture, including temple-pyramids, palaces and observatories, all built without metal tools. They were also skilled farmers, clearing large sections of tropical rain forest and, where groundwater was scarce, building sizable underground reservoirs for the storage of rainwater. The Maya were equally skilled as weavers and potters, and cleared routes through jungles and swamps to foster extensive trade networks with distant peoples.

2. The Construction Of The Pyramids
An illustrated guide to the construction, architecture and the evolution of the design of the pyramids from the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism.
http://www.touregypt.net/construction/
We've Covered the different pyramids of Egypt in our Monuments section under the Antiquities page; however, this area is dedicated to the construction and architecture of the pyramids, how they were built, and the evolution in design from the step pyramid to the true pyramid. Beginning with the step pyramids of the 3rd Dynasty , and continuing for centuries, the pyramid is a marvel of construction, and is considered one of the "Seven wonders of the world." The pyramids are the only of these seven that remain standing and intact. The Step Pyramid
In this section we discuss the design and construction of the step pyramids of the early dynasties. These pyramids were large, but due to their structure, not nearly as large as the true pyramids. The True Pyramid
Here you can find information on the design and construction methods of the true pyramid.

The Egyptian pyramids were funerary monuments built for the pharaohs and their closest relatives. Most date from the Old Kingdom (c.2686-2181 BC) and are found on the west bank of the Nile, in a region approximately 100 km long and situated south of the delta, between Hawara and Abu Ruwaysh. Pyramids developed from the "mastaba", a low, rectangular stone structure erected over a tomb. HOW TO NAVIGATE:

It was surrounded by an elaborate complex of buildings, now partially restored, whose function related to the cult of the dead.

in the Souk of the great and ancient city of Alexandria, in one of the less-visited parts, away from the dealers in valuable carpets and finest spices, is the little shop of the trader Ali Wassaf. Ali is a poor trader - he does not bargain properly and he does not know how to buy effectively. To the right, just inside the shabby entrance to his shop, is a tray with a mound of little pyramids. Manufactured of thin plastic, they tend to split along the seam. They are hollow and do not even have a base. It is necessary to step outside the shop with one of these and, using the magnifying glass that all visiting archaeologists will carry, turn the little pyramid upside down. Inside, barely distinguishable from the other blemishes on the inside of the plastic, is a message. Once deciphered, it reads "made in Taiwan".

Pyramids T he spectacular pyramids that have made Egypt so famous are truly one of the world's greatest architectural wonders. One of the oldest mysteries surrounding ancient Egypt concerns the building of the pyramids. How did humans move such massive blocks of stone using only Stone Age tools? The Egyptians left thousands of illustrations depicting daily life in the Old Kingdom. Curiously enough, none of them show how pyramids were built. A pyramid is a tomb, a four-sided stone structure that symbolizes the sacred mountain, humanity’s universal striving to reach the heavens. The ancient belief in raising the human spirit towards the gods is the quintessential purpose behind the construction of pyramids. Even today, pyramids are metaphors for humanity’s search for higher consciousness. T he IMAX film Mysteries of Egypt features the pyramids at Giza , just west of Cairo. T he ancient Egyptians built their pyramids, tombs, temples and palaces out of stone, the most durable of all building materials. Although earthquakes, wars and the forces of nature have taken their toll, the remains of Egypt’s monumental architectural achievements are visible across the land, a tribute to the greatness of this civilization. These building projects took a high degree of architectural and engineering skill, and the organization of a large workforce consisting of highly trained craftsmen and labourers. A part from the pyramids, Egyptian buildings were decorated with paintings, carved stone images, hieroglyphs and three-dimensional statues. The art tells the story of the pharaohs, the gods, the common people and the natural world of plants, birds and animals. The beauty and grandeur of these sites are beyond compare. How the ancient Egyptians were able to construct these massive structures using primitive tools is still a mystery. Tombs Temples

(Pyramids) Like the Sumerians at the same time, the Egyptians around 3000-2500 BC devoted a lot of energy to building big buildings. The Pyramids are one of the most impressive monuments of the ancient world, and you can still visit them today.
The Pyramids were built as tombs for the Pharaohs, the rulers of Egypt. They were all built during the Old Kingdom , so that the greatest remains of Ancient Egypt are also some of the earliest to have been built!
The first Pharaohs built simpler tombs, called mastabas. These mastabas were square buildings with a room inside for the coffin and the mummy and some things to take with you to the afterlife.
Then the Egyptian pharaohs began to build mounds of earth on top of their mastabas, to make them grander. Ordinary princes and other aristocrats went on being buried in mastabas. The Step Pyramid is one of the first of these new fancy tombs. Doesn't it look a lot like a ziggurat
Soon the Egyptians decided to fill in the steps of the pyramid and make it look smoother: this is the Bent Pyramid.

People tend to think that Egyptian styles stayed the same for the whole period of Egyptian history, but that's not true. The Egyptians built different kinds of buildings at different times, just like any other group of people.
In the beginning, they built mainly mastabas, a kind of tomb with a flat roof like a house. Then throughout most of the Old Kingdom , the Egyptians built the pyramid tombs which are now so famous.
In the Middle Kingdom , the mastaba tomb came back again, although in a more elaborate form for the Pharaohs. No more pyramids were built.
Then in the New Kingdom there was a lot of building that was not tombs: temples for the gods especially, but also palaces for the Pharaohs. Main Egyptian page

ANCIENT GREEK PYRAMIDS Introduction List of Other Pyramids INTRODUCTION T he existence of pyramids in Greece was unknown to most people until recently, and even today not much is known about them. For example, the Pyramid of Hellenikon , near Argos , is older than the Pyramids of Egypt. In fact, Pausanias (in Graeciae Descriptio) claims that this pyramid was a memorial in remembrance of the first battle fought by soldiers bearing shields Pyramids in Greece are usually smaller than the ones found in Egypt (exceptions are a few sculpted pyramids ) and they are in a rather poor state There is no clear evidence as to the use of pyramids in antiquity. Archeologists believe that they are memorials or observation-communication towers (phryctoriums). Only for the pyramid at Helenikon there is a reference by Pausanias for its probable purpose Most Greek pyramids have not been studied yet, with the exception of the pyramids at Hellenikon and Ligourion which were dated and studied by Dr I. Lyritzis of the Academy of Athens In this section we also present some sculpted pyramids about which there is some controversy as to whether they are man made or natural occurrences . We think that this matter should be further investigated because, for example, visitors at the
