    HAVERFORD AWARDS: Did you know that 19 People from Haverford have received Rhodes Scholarships? How about the four Haverford graduates who have received Nobel prizes? Or the 15 who have received NCAA scholar awards? Or the 6 Pulitzer prize winners in the past 20+ years, including 2 in 2003? ATHLETES WHO HAVE WON MAJOR ACADEMIC AWARDS this ink will provide you brief biographies of some of the many Haverford varisty athlete who have won awards such as Rhodes, Luce, Watson and NCAA Postgraduate scholarships and fellowships HAVERFORD ALUMNI DO WELL: a recent analysis of the various data bases maintained by Marquis (Who's Who in America, etc.), ranked colleges and universities by percentage of living alumni who appeared. HAVERFORD was ranked eighth, with 4.10% of its living alumni listed (not including me). This placed Haverford after Yale, Princeton, Cal Tech, Harvard, Columbia, Amehrst and Williams, and in front of Dartmouth, MIT, Swarthmore, Cornell, Penn, Brown, Duke, Georgetown and every single state university. There were only four categories - the others that had been specified in Joseph Pulitzer Joseph Pulitzer (April 10, 1847 - October 29, 1911), born in Makó, Hungary he imigrated to the United States and became an American newspaper man and journalist. The Pulitzer Prizes, first awarded in 1917, were provisions in Pulitzer's will. (His name, often mispronounced, should actually sound like "Pull it, sir.")     ROBERT K. AVERY Professor of Communication at the University of Utah where he works with KUED-TV and KUER-FM and the University of Utah’s Student Broadcast Council. He received his Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University in 1971. A former public broad-casting executive, he is past Chairman of the National Association of Educational Broadcasters. Avery is founding editor of the scholarly journal, Critical Studies in Mass Communication. The most recent of his many writings on public broadcasting appear in the 1999 edition of A History of Public Broadcasting BEN BAGDIKIAN Former Dean of the Graduate School of Journalism, University of California at Berkeley. As a journalist, Bagdikian was honored with a Pulitzer Prize. As an author, he was recipient of the George Foster Peabody Award for criticism of broadcast commentary. His books include The Information Machines and The Media Monopoly . Bagdikian has served on the American Library Association Commission on Freedom and Equality of Access to Information.
