Puerto Rico today is caught between two diverse cultures and is constantly under scrutiny and judgement of visitors with only a scant understanding of the island and its people. Outsiders and especially mainland Americans will increasingly be called upon to understand Puerto Rico and her unique culture. Apart from the very obvious difference in the language, many of these cultural differences are harder to specify and quantify than are the formal elements in common just mentioned. At social and cultural levels profound differences do exist between people of different backgrounds. The was the first infuence in Puerto Rican culture but it was Spanish culture which most greatly infuenced the island's history until the beggining of this century. When the Spanish forced the Tainos into slavery, virtually the entire indigenous population was decimated, except for a few Amerindians who escaped into the remote mountains. Eventually they intermarried with the poor Spanish farmers and became known as . Because of industrialization and migration to the cities few real remain. Puerto Rico also has a rich African culture dating from the importation of Africans as slaves by the Spaniards in past centuries. The people of Puerto Rico represent a mixture of races, cultures, languages and religions. They draw their unique heritage from the Tainos, from Spanish loyalists who sought refuge here, from the African slaves and from other Caribbean islanders who came to the island in search of jobs. The Spanish they speak is a mix too, different somewhat from Castillian Spanish, with many words borrowed from the pre-Colombian Amerindian tongue right up to modern-day English.American culture has had a progressive effect upon Puerto Rican culture since 1898 but especially so after the 40's. Some Puerto Ricans are not happy with the result of that influence; others welcome it.

Contents of Curriculum Unit 87.01.04:
To Guide Entry
The purpose of this unit is to illustrate the interdiscipline of geography and culture, of history and literature. The geography of the land initiates the evolution of a culture. As different cultures are intertwined with the original, the culture becomes more complex. As an island which combines Indian, Black, and White cultures, Puerto Rico provides an interesting case in point. This unit begins with an introduction to Puerto Rican geography, history, and culture and then focuses on its literature. This unit is designed for middle school students in a social studies classroom. But it could be adapted and used in other settings.
Geography
The distribution of individuals on the island is patterned by the geographic features, with the coast being more populated than the interior. Anthropological papers have shown the biological and physiological differences stemming from environmental sources.
History
On November 19, 1493, Columbus, on his second voyage, found the island of San Juan Bautista (Puerto Rico). A permanent foothold was established in 1508 by Juan Ponce de Leon, when he founded the town of Caparra not far from the present capital of San Juan. Eventually all the Indians on the island were defeated in battle and subjugated. Badly mistreated by the Spaniards, they died out as a labor force and the role of the Indian was taken over by the African slaves. In time this port city evolved into what is now San Juan and the island Puerto Rico. As the Spanish empire grew, Puerto Rico’s strategic location over shadowed its economic significance. It was thought of by the crown officials as the strongest foothold of Spain in America.

Puerto Rico in the Great Depression Cultural Life
From
Federal Writers Project, 1940 Publishing Information
  • Spanish colonization was not altogether a pillaging expedition, nor were the civil and ecclesiastical officials so many gold-hungry looters. A number of them were men with excellent educational and cultural backgrounds. Some were among the leading scientists and scholars of the day; others, themselves men of letters, encouraged the production of literature in the New World.
  • The first settlers of Puerto Rico, the majority of whom came from the province of Andalucia in Spain, brought with them the Andalusian couplet and the seguidilla, from which contemporary popular poetry is patterned. The or countryside poetry of today is traceable also to the Andalusian a metric combination of ten verses which was introduced into the Island during the sixteenth century.
  • Coupled with the poetry of Puerto Rico is the name of the Spanish poet Bernardo de Balbuena. Appointed to the Diocese of the Island as Bishop, he occupied this high ecclesiastical office from 1619 to 1627, when he died at San Juan. It was here that he retouched and corrected his famous poem Bernardo

Before engaging in the services, your artwork should be examined prior to any work being done. The conservator should present a written preliminary report, which explains the proposed treatment, expected results, and estimated costs. Ask about insurance, payment terms, and any additional fees.
