Some Advice about Getting Published from Natural Bridge contributors
Dan Pope
has published short stories in McSweeney's, The Gettysburg Review, The Iowa Review, North Dakota Quarterly, Shenandoah, Portland Review, and Natural Bridge ("Leave" in no. 3, "My Brother's Apartment" in no. 6, and "House on Goose Pond" in no. 8). A lot of young writers send their stuff out before they're ready, before the particular piece is ready. That makes for a flurry of trips to the post office and a flurry of rejections. Instead, try working on a particular storyyour best oneuntil it's perfect. Go over it again and again, no matter how long it takes. Don't rush it into the mail. (I like to finish a story, then let it sit for a while.
When I come back to it, some weeks later, I usually learn that it wasn't finished after all, that there's a lot more work to do.)
One disadvantage about participating in an MFA program is that the atmosphere can foster competitiveness. Try the opposite approach. Form a group with some writer-friends. Let each other know about publishing opportunitiesmagazines calling for submissions, contest deadlines, new journals, friends of friends who know someone somewhere, anything. Compare notes about which editors seem to be receptive to what types of writing. If you establish a cordial relationship with an editor, then recommend the work of one of your friends. Celebrate when one of the group gets a story accepted by drinking alcoholic beverages at the nearest tavern. Be generous. You will feel happier about yourself and the world at large.

Articles and Interviews As more and more students begin using the Internet with the classroom curriculum, many educators are challenged with teaching students how to critically evaluate the content that they are reading. What better way for students to gain an understanding on what determines good content and style, than by becoming an editor of their own web pages? Students' learning is dramatically enhanced when they are actively involved with their learning. Tell me and I'll forget. Show me, and I may not remember. Involve me, and I'll understand. Getting started...
One of the first steps you should take before publishing information written by your students is to get written permission from your students and their parents for posting their work on line. Even though your students and their parents have signed the Acceptable Use Policy adopted by your corporation, it is another thing to publish students' work on the Internet. Anytime you post written or drawn work created by a students, you need both the students and the parents' permission to post that work on the Internet. Because most students are younger than the legal independent age, you need to acquire parent's permission as well as student's permission to publish personal information or projects. Some parents are reluctant to have their child's personal picture and written or drawn projects posted on the Internet. You can assure parents and students that the information being posted will be done in such a way that the student's privacy will be protected. Here are some guidelines to use when posting student work:

Publishing criteria for educational magazines and journals can usually be found inside the front or back covers of publications. Most teacher researchers who work in research teams first publish their reports in a team collection. This collection of teacher research articles can be run off and bound or placed in a notebook and distributed to fellow staff members at school or placed in the school library. The school district's area superintendent and to the school system's staff development office may also want copies for assessment reasons or other evaluative purposes.

The Web Content
Style Guide The essential guide for online writers, editors and managers August 04, Quality publishing is about saying no By Gerry McGovern Are the people who have least to say in your organization publishing most on your intranet or public website? Are the people who have most to say publishing least? You're not alone. Organizations are slowly realizing that managing a website is as much about what you don't publish as what you do. "You know, the groups and programs that we don't want to push are doing lots of publishing on the intranet and public website. That's because they're trying to justify their existence." This is a statement from a senior executive from a major organization. "Those groups and programs that we really want to promote, we can't get them to publish enough. They're too busy." Professional web publishing is not about getting lots of stuff up. It's about getting the right stuff up. There's a world of a difference between the two. Content can create value. Content can also destroy value. It can damage your reputation.

The following are just a few opinionated do's and don't of dealing with publishers and writing contests.
Avoid publishers who charge you, whether it be reading fees or any other reason, to publish your writing. A reputable or successful publication makes it monies from selling copies of its product or in some markets by advertising not from its writers and contributors. Especially avoid anthologies (primarily poetry anthologies) that require the purchase of their book in order to be published. One reason is stated above. But the other reason is that if they require you to buy a copy, it's not because the publication is wildly successful or an elite market. Actually they do this because this is their main means of distribution and almost sole source of sales. Don't ever believe that because a submission was rejected it is totally unpublishable. They are many other reasons for a rejection letter other than "it sucked." Most publications have certain guidelines, stated or unstated, as to the exact type, content, and style of work they will accept which also affect such decisions. Send all your submissions in proper, typed prose or poetry manuscript form with a cover or query letter. If you don't know the form or if in doubt go to the library and look it up. And find out the editor's name so you may address directly to that person and not just put "To whom it may concern" or "Dear Editor." Always a plus in an editor's book.

Why do electronic publishing at all? Publishing a journal electronically sounds very attractive. There are a number of good reasons for doing so, but it does have disadvantages too. Before committing yourself and your organisation to the effort and expense involved, it is sensible to look carefully at both the advantages and disadvantages. In the end, the decision will depend on what your main objectives are, so it is important to be clear about why you are publishing, or planning to publish, in the first place: what information you want to disseminate, and to whom. Electronic publishing is often considered to have four great advantages over print: international reach, speed, additional capabilities and lower cost. All of these are true up to a point.

Publishing the original PowerPoint (ppt.) File
By default, files created with PowerPoint 2000 for Windows are in PowerPoint presentation format (ending in extension .ppt). If you are confident that your users all have access to PowerPoint 2000, you can simply publish the .ppt file to your web space and create a link to that file. (More information on publishing a file to course space.) PowerPoint Presentation format (.ppt) offers the best printing options for students. When students click on the link to the presentation, the browser will either prompt them to either open the file or save it, or the browser will simply open the presentation in PowerPoint. Then the file can be printed from within PowerPoint however the student chooses to print it. You can also save PowerPoint files as:
  • a Web Page (produces a number of .htm, .xml, and image files; requires only a web browser to view.)
