64. Getting Published
But what I learned in the meantime was bigger than any publishing tip I had ever read, you really must LOVE THE WORK. While getting published is an exciting
http://www.kerismith.com/WishJarTales/gettingpub.htm
Seven Steps to Getting Published
(or...How to sell your ideas) As with any advice I can only tell you what worked for me, some people may have a different approach. I find now it really helps me to read about the process of creating, the process of submitting is extremely important to learn but fairly straightforward (you only need to do it a few times to get it)... Let your idea have it's own life. This sounds a little strange but what I mean by this is once you have the idea in your head don't try to control it too much. Let it tell you what form it should take. It really helps at this point to go for a long walk and just LISTEN (it may be several long walks). Let the words and images evolve. With my most recent book it took over a year for me to know what form it would take. I had ideas for content and had begun writing but no overall format to tie it all together. I didn't worry about it too much but just let it "be" for a while. One day while reading a book on "intuition in business", a concept popped into my head. This concept was "play", and it tied the whole book together and became my focus from that moment on. It helped me to really work with my intuition*, let it be my guide.
*recommended reading on the subject of intuition "Anatomy of the Spirit" by Caroline Myss Really enjoy yourself and the process of creating, the best work will flow* out of you. People will respond the most to things you did with passion, (as opposed to things you forced). Don't worry about whether it would sell, or what's hot in the moment your target market, or what a family member recommends. Be honest with yourself and the process.

http://www.mja.com.au/public/bookroom/1999/maddern/maddern.html
Tips on getting published
Publishing your medical research paper. What they don't teach in medical school. This book has been written for the clinician rather than the statistician and attempts to present technical information to assist in getting a medical research paper published. The content is most thorough and the important steps are laid out in order: planning, observing, writing, editing and revising. The points covered are comprehensive and the style is direct. The more important points are highlighted, which certainly enables a quick overview of the issues. There are, however, some deficiencies. The description and explanation of non-parametric statistics is insufficient, especially as it is common to have a clinical study population that is not normally distributed. The usefulness of non-parametric statistical tests could have been given much greater emphasis. The book could have been substantially shorter, a lot more readable, and with better graphics. Indeed, for a book that purports to provide guidance on how to present data, interpret data and lay out a manuscript, it brings into question the author's own ability to perform such a task! Nonetheless, it is a relatively inexpensive text and would probably be of use in medical academic hospital departments to guide the novice and reassure the experienced contributor. Guy J Maddern

67. OP-ED | Author's Contract
In sum, just getting published is an adventure in And when authors are published, they find that their cut precipitously by today s standard publishing contact
http://www.mediachannel.org/views/oped/bookcontract.shtml
February 3, 2000 The "Standard" Book Contract:
An Antitrust Lawsuit Waiting To Happen
By Thomas Hauser Best-selling writers might be treated fairly by the media conglomerates that dominate publishing today, but the average author isn't. And no clearer proof exists than the "standard" book contract, routinely forced upon authors and their agents. Many of the clauses that have been imposed on authors throughout the industry bear no relationship to any economic reality other than the best interests of the publisher. Kay Murray has been general counsel for The Authors Guild since 1994. "The contracts were bad enough when I got here," says Murray. "But over the past five years, they've become far more exploitative. The new technology has led to a significant decrease in cost and risk to publishers, but they simply won't share the wealth. In fact, every few months now, there's another change for the worse, with all of the major publishers acting in lockstep on it." The abuses fit into several categories. First, in contracts that are ostensibly written to assure publication, there are now clauses that, under certain circumstances, can prevent writers from being published. As for traditional options, publishing contracts now often contain several Draconian provisions. Authors must submit their next book in completed manuscript form to the publisher before it is considered by any other publisher. But the first publisher need not consider the manuscript before publication of the work currently under contract. And then, even if the first publisher declines the second project, the author must subsequently offer that publisher the chance to match any offer received at a later date from any other publisher.

  • Start by thinking about the sort of magazines that interest you. Have your pastimes and hobbies helped you build up a specialist knowledge that may be useful on a particular magazine? Often these titles are less inundated with requests for work experience and, sometimes, have smaller teams; your help may prove invaluable.
Apply in writing with your CV, some examples of your work and a covering letter. If you're on a specialist course, ask your tutor for a letter explaining how the placement will be useful.
Identify what you hope to learn while you're on the placement and discuss this with the person arranging your time with the company.

"Okay", you reply, but they're gone before they get a chance to hear your answer. Is this a familiar experience you've had with your publisher or agent? Are you an author who has never been published before and you're trying to decide what you should do? The future of your book is always in your hands, from the time you write the first sentence. This article will present both ways to get published, helping you to decide which choice is best for you in your present circumstances. This series of articles will not only deal with the subject of getting published in print, but it will also touch on the possibility of getting published in e-book format. Let's make the assumption that you have never been published before. You have written a book that you're just aching to share with the world, but you're not sure if you should allow a publisher to handle it all, or if you should market your own book.

Book Reviews
Book reviews can vary in size from brief summaries to lengthy review essays discussing several books and themes. Book reviews are easily found using the same indexes and databases recommended for finding articles; search for the author and/or title as a keyword for the broadest search. Be aware that a search for the target book author in the AUTHOR field, may night find a review (since the writer of the review is typically the "author" of the review itself). Some indexes provide a search field specifically for book review, including (use the links to see examples):

This helps to clarify their work, generate new ideas, and most importantly validate the piece of writing. Publishing involves sharing a piece of writing with an audience. There are many forms for a student to publish a piece of writing. Author's chair is a popular way for students to share their writing. Students sit on a designated chair for "authors" and read their writing to an audience. For students in the audience, this provides practice in listening and responding skills. Students need to be taught appropriate ways to respond to writing. One possible way to respond is to provide the author with "2 hugs and a wish". State two things you liked about the writing and one thing you wished. The acronym TAG is useful for Author's Chair and for conferencing. T Tell something you like about the piece A Ask questions to clarify meaning.
