  • Fit is critical
Publishers get anywhere from several hundred to several thousand proposals for books every year, and most publish only a small fraction of what is submitted. In addition, peer review costs the publisher money, and all publishers have limited time and resources to spend on manuscripts that don't make sense for their particular list. Consequently, submissions outside of a press's area of expertise rarely merit an in-house reading and will likely be rejected. Blanket submissions to a large number of presses are therefore not to your advantage as a potential author. On the other hand, it is to your distinct advantage to seek out publishers who have lists in relevant subject areas. Not only do you vastly increase your chances of landing a contract, but you also increase the potential for your book's success after it has been published. Books are more easily and efficiently marketed within an established list than as a single project, and you will consequently get broader exposure in the marketplace by publishing with an appropriate publisher (whether large or small).

This is the kind of logic that infuriates a lot of Westerners in India. We spoilt Westerners are used to being informed that if something cannot be done, why it cannot be done, and are then given some provisional timescale as to when it may be done. Variable factors and various dependables are thrown into an equation, resulting in some form of explanation. We may or may not be happy with the outcome, but at least we then have an understanding of what is happening and why it is happening.
Printing:
contain two different shades of paper. So finally, another printer; efficient and effective. Mission accomplished!
Displaying: the books sold out in one of the shops and I wanted to make sure the shelf would be replenished as soon as possible. After all, what is the point of getting maximum publicity in the media for the book, if the shelves are going to be left bare for days on end? The shop manager: "Yes sir, definitely they have been reordered. We reordered yesterday and they will be back on display tomorrow.” Two days later, the shelf was still bare. “We will reorder tomorrow” I was informed. “You told me you had reordered two days back”, I groaned. I didn’t wait for the reply. I knew it would be along the lines of...would be, should be, maybe or might be...By this stage I had been worn down by Kaka logic.

Writing for Publication: Tools for Getting Started
  • Assessing Previously Published Articles on Your Topic
  • Consulting an article index in your field, or a citation index, for articles that have been previously published on your topic will help you to assess whether your information fills a void or offers a new perspective.
Citation indexes indicate how many times an author, or a particular article, has been cited by other authors and can be useful in identifying experts in a field.
Targeting Scholarly Journals and Publications in a Particular Field
  • To find a list of scholarly journals in a particular field (i.e. Business, Medicine, Art, or Criminology or Law Enforcement) consider looking at the following library resources. Within a subject section, look for journals that are categorized as refereed or scholarly
    • Magazines for Libraries List of core periodicals for library collections; Useful for experts' opinions of journals, purpose, scope, background, content, audience, circulation statistics, price, contact information, publication interval, classification and lists of resources that index articles from the journals. July 2002 GETTING PUBLISHED PART 1: PROCESS OVERVIEW At one of the sessions at the past E3, during the question and answer portion, an audience member told the panelists he was developing a game and he wanted to know how he could go about getting it published. He said his company’s plan was to completely finish the game before showing it to publishers. The panelists’ response was unanimous: "This isn’t the right session for that question." On a regular basis, GIGnews receive emails from developers who are desperately seeking funding and publishing deals. They want publicity. They want advice. Does anyone know anyone who can help? Anyone? At all? The topic of how developers go about getting published is an involved one and, apparently for many, an elusive one. Rather than trying to cover it all in one article, GIGnews has decided to begin an ongoing exploration of the topic, beginning this with an initial overview. Setting the scene

Publishing on the Web Is Different
    Summary
Publishing on the Web is very different from older methods of publication. A Web publication is inherently a general, device-independent and program-independent document with structural markup . The presentation of a document may vary greatly, and it must vary, to allow viewing (or hearing) the same document on a wide variety of devices, ranging from wristwatch monitors to full-size movie screens. There are strong forces, most importantly the conservativeness of most people, which try to impose author-controlled layout on Web documents. However, switch to presentation control by readers is inevitable - and a positive thing.
    HTML = content + structure
The HTML language was designed to promote worldwide distribution of documents in a device-independent form. It is far from being perfect for the purpose, but it has served well and is suitable for a wide range of documents. It is easy to learn and easy to use. all documents written in good HTML. Admittedly, popular Web browsers are often defective in presenting basic HTML structures properly, and they are far from providing high quality by default and well-customizable by user options. However, attempts to improve the situation by tuning HTML files according to "known" characteristics of popular browsers, or

Perseverance, Publishing and the Urge to Write
    By James Van Pelt
Discouraging news about the publishing business has pummeled the writing community lately. Beside the frightening specter of Norman Spinrad's misadventures with his publisher, and the ongoing fracas with Bantam over the Star Wars novel contracts, other high profile harbingers of trouble for veteran and novice writers lurk on the horizon. Spider Robinson, for example, has posted an open letter about his thoughts on publishing, and none of his thoughts sound hopeful. An eleven-year SFWA veteran recently vented his frustrations with novel publishers in a resignation letter to the SFWA Forum . Paula Guran of Dark Echo also lately bemoaned the state of the publishing industry in her e-mail newsletter. For many, particularly those who earn a living or hope to in this business, things have never looked bleaker, and appearance mirrors reality well in this case. More people it seems are writing science fiction, fantasy and horror than ever, and fewer places accept the work. The cutbacks in "mid-list" authors in the book publishing market, and the disappearance of major short story markets are well documented. Because of these trends, numerous authors and want-to-be authors are despairing. Comments like, "You have to know someone to be published," or "The editors only print their friends' work," are common. A former student called me last week, completely down in the mouth about her writing. She said, "I've been working for years and seen no success at all, just one rejection after another. I think I ought to quit."

to give the idea of getting published credibility; you Now, a person can publish himself initially to to break into commercial writing or publishing to make
    http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/JBOUSHKA/selfpub.htm
A Personal Perspective on SELF-PUBLISHING For almost any research, academic, or journalistic professional, "getting published" is a continually mandatory career-defining event. For an aspiring novelist, getting that first offer or advance may start a whole career. For "getting published" makes a private person into "somebody" outside of the boundary of family, significant others, and business and social contacts. For someone who ultimately wants to expand himself beyond just a "family first" experience, "getting published" is that ego-ratifying event that gives one fame or notoriety. In the eyes of the law, getting published putatively makes one a "public figure." It represents a transition. It thereby may somewhat limit his privacy rights (the public may have a legitimate right to know, for example, how he makes a living or made one before publication), but it creates a commercial value in his publicity rights. But publishing has always previously been associated with professionalism as recognized by others in various disciplines. People rarely get published with successful non-fiction works on science, business or politics until they have already established themselves in some particular field-using by playing the advancement game but sometimes (as with Wade Cook) with entrepreneurial, practical, money-making ventures. Both journalism and fiction have, in different ways, come to be recognized as informal "professions" for which there are standards of credibility and ethics.

My Publishing Experience I have written this section to prepare you for the long hard struggle of getting published, what to consider and what NOT to consider when trying to get your work published. I finished my first complete novel, REM, in December 1995 and had already done quite a bit of investigation, by going through the Writers and Artists yearbook and collating a shortlist of a few publishers. I then saw an advertisement by Minerva Press asking all new authors to send in their work for assessment. The choice seemed an obvious one as I packaged up my manuscript and sent it to Minerva Press. Minerva Press The response was very quick, probably only about two weeks before I had a reply, and what a reply it was. I received the editorial review of my book which basically glowed in my hands, it said how well it was written, about the relationships of the characters, how good the story was, it was such a fantastic review. What really made the review was the fact that they stated it could do well if published under the Minerva Press Imprint. Without hesitation I proceeded to step further into the deal, it was going to cost quite a bit of money although I could pay in four installments, and the risk seemed worth it, I had dreams of really making it with my first book!

Poynter gives you tips and tools to utilize your time, energy and creativity in the best possible way. Through quotations (which he adds are not called quotes as some might assume), anecdotes and simple how-to's, he woos the reader into believing a successful book can emerge from the cluttered mind, after clearing away all the junk of course. That junk, he tells us, includes interruptions from friends or family and time wasted waiting for inspiration to strike. Forget all that, he says, and get focused - write, rewrite, rewrite again, edit and edit again, then send it into the world for copy editing, proofreading and finally, publishing.
