. . . I take it that the business of an editor is to edit. If he is unprepared to take the risks of backing his own judgments, he should peddle another line of goods.
Fredson Bowers
A sense of the fundamental textual decencies is parceled out unequally at birth. Editors who are otherwise sound oppose the correction of factual errors in critical editions. Factors affecting the decision to emend authorial errors in works of fiction include the nature of the work, the author’s commitment to accuracy, the author-editor relationship, the conditions of publication, and the proper function of editorial intervention. Most of the examples discussed here are from The Great Gatsby because it is a widely published masterpiece with a history of textual maladies. F. Scott Fitzgerald advised his daughter that it is the writer

vers. 1.2 - November 2003 "Getting published" is the aim and bane of scholars everywhere. In many ways, this can be especially problematic for emerging scholars working in feminist studies - from resistance to feminist analyses on the part of journals and editors, to questions of "where does my work fit?" Shockingly, how exactly to do this publishing thing is often a mystery. So we at thirdspace are happy to help dispell some of the confusion about this cruial area of academic life. Regardless of your field or favourite body of theory, there are several key things that editors look for in a good paper for publication. Here are some tips, compiled by the editors at thirdspace - it includes the criteria we ask reviewers to use when they evaluate papers, and which we use ourselves in deciding which papers should be accepted. Note: this is required reading for all thirdspace authors-to-be!

If you've never truly considered writing a book, take another look at the rubbish filling bookshelves at airport kiosks. The 'authors' of that stuff are laughing all the way to the bank. While English majors and real literary types are screaming at each other in the stuffy halls of academia or the pages of The New Yorker , these clowns are quietly rehashing tired plots and making millions for it. You're a smart person, so we see no reason you shouldn't take a crack at making bank as well. (Heck, even if you're a ding-bat, we think you should give it a try. Al Gore's books sold millions.) Here's how you too can tap into the wallets of all those gullible readers out there. Please note, however, that we can't actually write the book for you. You may have to do that yourself. The first rule of getting a book published is to avoid writing a book. Whoa, what the hell are we talking about? Yes, it's very counterintuitive, but the main goal of anyone who wants to publish a book is to land a literary agent, before spending years writing something nobody wants to read. (Of course, if you're reading this SYW because you've already churned out a work of genius, don't fear; go directly to

Find a Publisher to Get My Book Published
Imagine sending a query letter offering an unfinished manuscript to eight publishers and getting back four positive responses within the week. How about having the managing editor of a major imprint contact you out of the blue asking if you have a publisher for your work? These may sound like scenarios from an advertisement in a writer's magazine intended to separate you from your money, but they actually happened for this writer, thanks to the Internet. Why publish on the Internet The vast majority of writers today have exchanged their typewriters for personal computers, but their sole focus remains that double-spaced manuscript that gets sent off to New York City with a SASE. That's a shame, because by simply skipping down an extra item in the File menu of your word processor, you can save that document as HTML, a form ready for instant publication on the Internet. "Why should I give my work away for free?" you argue, "What if somebody steals it?" As an unpublished writer, getting people to read your work and respond to it is the primary challenge. After all, you need to convince the editors or agents you contact that you really know your market, but how can you actually do that if your market has never heard of you? Whether you are writing plumbing books or poetry, there is an audience for your work on the Internet, and if you can fix their leaky hearts, some of them will send e-mail to let you know how much they appreciate you. The main pay-offs of web publishing for the unknown writer are reader feedback and traffic (visitors to your site).

Paper $15.00 0-226-28844-7 Spring 2001 Writers and publishers depend on one another, but it often seems as if they speak two different languages. Getting It Published is a lively, insider's guide to academic publishinga book that will tell you not only how publishing works, but how you can make it work for you. Written by a veteran editor with experience in both the university press and commercial worlds, the book fields the big questions in a scholar's life. Why do editors choose some books and decline others? How does a writer decide where to submit a project? How does the review process work, and why is it necessary? What can an author expect from a publishing housebefore, during, and after publication? William Germano answers these questions and more, and along the way, offers encouragement, tips, and warnings. This savvy guide unravels the mysteries of publishing and walks you through the process from start to finish. You'll learn how to think about your book before you submit it and what you need to know about your contract. With wit and humor, Germano also addresses some of the finer points of publishing etiquette, including howand how notto approach a busy editor and how to work with other publishing professionals on matters of design, marketing, and publicity. Graduate students, recent Ph.D.'s, and experienced authors alike will appreciate the chapters on "Quotations, Pictures, and Other Headaches" and on compiling and editing collections and anthologies.

It is difficult to get published in the children's writing market these days. If you've checked out the publisher listings, you will note that the vast majority of publishers don't accept unsolicited manuscripts. Does that mean becoming a published writer is a pipe dream NOT AT ALL!! Writing children's books is very difficult, but already being a writer gives you an advantage when writing about your hobbies or anything you love. There are two good ways you can make money with your writing while trying to break into the children's writing segmenteBooks and Freelancing. Both of these markets are much wider open. In fact, writing an ebook doesn't require ANYONE else's approval but yours!! I have found that it is easier to get published in other segments, non-fiction, editorial reviews, etc. Here are a few carefully selected eBooks that can teach you about writing eBooks or Freelancing. They will help you realize your dream of getting published, and of making some money while you try to generate that bestselling children's book!!

Getting published
Be aware of the market you are targeting Remember that there are over 100,000 books published each year in the UK. Don't let this put you off writing a book, but write because you feel you have a genuine contribution to make in a certain field, not just because you want to become rich and famous. Above all, remember that publishers, like any business, exist to make a profit. You are much more likely to get your work published if you accept this and approach the task in a business-like and professional manner. This doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice your artistic vision or 'dumb-down' - far from it - but experience has shown us that the key to getting published lies in convincing a publisher that your book has a potential market, that you are the best person to write it, and that you have done your research. So we'll repeat the first rule of getting your work published: Be aware of the market you are targeting Do some research into what is currently being published. Find out about books published in your subject area, and make sure that you are clear about what makes your book different. If you are merely repeating something which is already in print, it is unlikely that you will be seriously considered for publication. Try to identify any gaps in the market and ensure that you have the means for effectively filling these. This advice particularly applies to writers of non-fiction. Presenting your manuscript It is highly unlikely that your work will be considered if it is not presented as a professional package. A manuscript should be presented in a manner which will be immediately attractive to the reader. It should be typewritten with double spacing on one side of A4 paper, with each page accordingly numbered. Ensure that you retain at least one good copy of your manuscript.

Who we are
Getting Started in Online Publishing
by Trudy W. Schuett Online publishing—whew! It’s a vast subject, to be sure. With the number of web sites now in the billions, it’s almost too much to even think about for a new writer, or one who may have experience in the field but has hesitated to make the transition from print. I’ve been online since 1995, and watched a lot of e-zines and e-publishers grow from casual, hastily-constructed websites to successful businesses worth emulating. I’ve seen some go live with big ambitions and fail. Many, of course, publish online just for the love of writing and the need to have their work seen and known by other people. Even though self-publishing in the print world is also growing, there is the added element of making sure the books are available when and where readers are looking for them. Dealing with distributors, I’m hearing, can be complex, and they can make or break a writer’s career if that link in the chain from publisher to reader fails. Then there are the bookstore owners who must be convinced the book is worth carrying on their shelves. When a writer is working with limited funding and other resources, sometimes print is not the answer for those who wish to reach as wide an audience as possible. After all, even a small print publishing house has the advantage of more than one person, and a writer working alone has only his or her single set of 24 hour days!
