Arthur Black Arthur Black was born in Toronto in 1943. His abortive getaways were launched from 1946-1994. Temporary respites were achieved in Schomberg, Montreal, London, Las Palmas, Madrid, Thunder Bay and Fergus, Ontario. Permanent liftoff was achieved in 1995 with his move to Salt Spring Island.     The Autry Museum presents Another West: Poets From Our Community, a year-long poetry series reflecting the many voices of our community, from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Theatre. This month, poets Dima Hilal and Ryan Oba will focus on Celebrating Rituals: Religion in the West. This poetry series is inspired by the cultural resources and collections of the Autry Museum. Another West: Poets From Our Community is hosted by poet Larry Jaffe. Museum admission: General adult, $7.50; seniors and students with valid ID, $5; children ages 12 and under, $3. All programs are wheelchair accessible. Located in Los Angeles's Griffith Park where the Golden State (5) and Ventura (134) freeways meet, the Autry Museum is across from the Los Angeles Zoo. The National Writing Project wants you to project your voice—by writing for The Voice and The Quarterly. We welcome stories about classroom practice, students' work, and activities at writing project sites, as well as opinion pieces and essays. Submissions run 600 to 1,000 words in length for The Voice, and 1,000 to 5,000 words for The Quarterly
The Quarterly
Audience
The primary audience for The Quarterly consists of teachers of writing, kindergarten through university level, as well as college instructors engaged in preparing teachers to teach writing. A secondary audience includes researchers and scholars in the teaching of writing, school administrators, curriculum directors, and parents. In general, readers can benefit from articles in The Quarterly even if they are unfamiliar with the National Writing Project. Content
We encourage articles of between 1,000 and 5,000 words on the following topics: classroom strategies related to teaching writing and literacy; teacher research and more formal scholarly inquiry in these areas; essays on language and the craft of writing; discussion of standards, assessment and other school reform issues as they relate to literacy education; pieces about teaching literacy in specialized communities of learners—English language and adult learners, for instance.

Gail Bowen b. 22 Sept. 1942 in Toronto. Daughter of Bert and Doris (Miller) Bartholomew. Gail Bowen's marriage to Ted Bowen (from Texas) has resulted in three children, Hildy, Max, Nat, and two grand-daughters, Madeline and Alejandra Bowen Diaz. Bowen was educated at the University of Toronto (B.A.), University of Waterloo (M.A.), and the University of Saskatchewan where she completed all required work for a Ph.D. except the dissertation. She taught University extension courses throughout Saskatchewan, then moved to Regina where she taught on and off campus for both the University of Regina and the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College (SIFC). Bowen has held a full-time permanent position in the English Department of SIFC since 1988 and is currently Associate Professor and Department Head of English. Her writing career began in 1987 with the publication of 1919: The love letters of George and Adelaide , a novel written in collaboration with Ron Marken. She is generally recognized as one of the top detective writers in Canada, for her series of novels featuring Joanne Kilbourn.

Hub City Announces 2004 Contest Winners
The annual Hub City Creative Writing Prizes have been awarded to an independent inventor and a former middle school English teacher, both of Spartanburg. (Some of the winning entries are below in PDF format.)
Louis Dischler Second place in poetry went to Aly Goodwin, a graduate of the Iowa Writers Workshop who recently moved back to Spartanburg, and third to Phillip Belcher, president of the Mary Black Foundation. Honorable mentions were given to Meta Griffin and Nathaniel Coburn. Thirty-six Spartanburg County poets entered the contest. Michel Stone Second place went to Erika McBeth, a student at USC Spartanburg. She also received second place in the 2003 Hub City fiction contest. Thirty-three Spartanburg County fiction writers entered this year. The judge in the poetry contest was G. C. Waldrep of Iowa City, Iowa, whose manuscript Goldbeater's Skin won the 2003 Colorado Prize for Poetry and was published in December. He is also the author of a nonfiction book, Southern Workers and the Search for Community (Illinois, 2000).

The Guide for Authors is presented as an aid to readers who want to contribute articles to the two ASRT scholarly journals, Radiation Therapist and Radiologic Technology and our member newsmagazine ASRT Scanner. ASRT Scanner
Radiologic technologists are encouraged to write for the ASRT monthly newsmagazine Scanner about their insights into the technology and trends that affect other R.T.s on the job. Two columns are open to R.T.s, "Health Wise" and "Opinion." Both run 900 to 1,000 words. Editors also will work with authors on feature articles, 1,000 to 1,500 words. The PRC: Working to put more $$$ into the pockets of freelance writers . . . Every time you hear a song played on the radio, the songwriter gets a few cents. The PRC does the same thing for writers. When our work is included in a database, sold over the web, delivered for a fee via fax, or photocopied into a "reader" for use in a classroom, the PRC helps us get the royalties coming to us. Most freelance creators are struggling to make a living in the late 20th Century. The PRC is part of the solution. The premise of the PRC is simple. Writers give the PRC permission to act as their agent in licensing secondary rights to their previously published articles. These articles then become part of the PRC's "inventory."
