Alistair MacLeod was born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, in 1936. He lived on the Prairies until the age of ten when his parents moved back to the family farm on Cape Breton. After obtaining his Teacher's Certificate from the Nova Scotia Teacher's College, Alistair took his B.A. and B.Ed. (1960) from St. Francis Xavier University, his M.A. (1961) from the University of New Brunswick, and his Ph.D. (1968) from the University of Notre Dame. He taught at Indiana University from 1966 until 1969, then moved to the University of Windsor, where he is currently Professor of English and Creative Writing. CEA Critic is the scholarly journal of the College English Association, a national organization for teachers of college English. Produced three times a year, the CEA Critic publishes scholarly articles that focus on literary texts, fiction, poetry, the various genres of nonfiction, prose, and film taught in the literature or composition classroom. It also publishes articles on the application of critical theory. Manuscripts submitted to the CEA Critic should be 15–20 typed pages and follow current MLA format. Manuscripts are screened by an editorial board, and only submissions by CEA members will be published. See the submission address below. The CEA Forum Online —the newsletter of the College English Association—publishes short articles (generally 2,000 or fewer words) that respond to classroom practice or to opinions about the profession. In addition, the CEA Forum disseminates news about the organization and its regional affiliates along with other news of professional and academic interest to the association’s membership. The CEA Forum is now published twice annually as an online publication. Only submissions by CEA members will be published. See the submission address below.

    Writing Contests
There are hundreds of literary contests, online and off. Most are real; some are even prestigious. But many are fake. And of the legitimate ones, few are important enough to provide a meaningful addition to your writing resume.
    Contest Fakes
Fake contests come in many different guises, but they all have a common goalto take your money.
Some are outright scams. For instance, one fee-charging literary agency advertises a contest where the prize is agency representation. Representation is indeed offered (to everyone who enters), but the catch is that it comes with a hefty editing fee attached. Another agency uses a false name to run its contestentrants are told that even though they didn't win their work is "exceptional", and referred to the agency, which charges an up-front fee.
Other contests are run by questionable publishers. Often the prize is a book contract, and the winners don't find out until afterward that they must pay a fee for publication, or agree to pre-purchase large numbers of books, or pay the publisher for a publicity campaign (a good reason never to enter a contest that doesn't allow you to refuse a contract if it's offered). Or the publisher may give the list of entrants to a vanity publishing service or a fee-charging literary agency, which then sends out solicitations and pays the first publisher a kickback if any of the entrants bite.
