Mary Alice Downie was born in Illinois to Canadian parents and grew up in Toronto. She graduated from the University of Toronto in English, despite spending most of her time at The Varsity. She had the usual range of jobs: steno pool, editorial assistant for a medical journal, and publicity management for a publisher. In 1959 she married John Downie; they moved to Pittsburgh where she produced film, play, and book reviews, and two daughters, Christine and Jocelyn. In 1962, they moved to Kingston, Alexandra was born in 1967. She hopes to continue writing and editing in a 103-year-old house in Kingston and 107-year-old cottage on an island on the Rideau, and to travel to as many places as possible. Joyce Barkhouse
Born Joyce Killam in 1913, in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia, the daughter of a "horse and buggy" doctor, Joyce Barkhouse was first published at the age of nineteen, when she was a teacher in a one room rural school. For many years her short stories appeared in magazines, school readers, newspapers and anthologies. Best known for her historical fiction for children, she achieved her greatest success with Pit Pony . A widow, presently living in Halifax and Harbourville, she is the mother of two children, Murray and Janet, and has five grandchildren.

John Ralston Saul John Ralston Saul was born in Ottawa on June 19, 1947. He was raised in Alberta, Manitoba and Ottawa. He graduated from McGill University with an Honours B.A. in 1969, and a Ph.D. from King's College in London in 1972. From 1972-75, he was the Director of an investment company in Paris. He was assistant to chairman of Petro-Canada from its inception in Calgary from 1976-78, and Toronto from 1978-82. He spent extended periods in North Africa and the Far East. From 1982-86, Saul lived in Paris before moving to Toronto, where he resided from 1986-92. He was President of the Canadian Centre of International PEN from 1990-92. He was also the founding member of the Common Agenda Alliance for the Arts, and a member of Comité d'Honnuer, Rencontre Québécoise Internationale des Ecrivains. Named by the Utre Reader as part of the "100 Visionaries of the World" in 1995, Saul was also named by the government of France as a Chevalier in the Ordre des Arts et des lettres in 1996. He is fluent in French and English. Selected Publications: The Unconscious Civilization . While living in London, England, she was a deputy editor of the Journal of Newspaper and Periodical History, and co-editor of a two-volume reference work on nineteenth- and twentieth-century British publishers. She has written for both academic and general readers on such topics as the mass media, popular culture, romance, and the history of sexuality. Now a full-time writer, her planned projects include a sexual history of the twentieth century that will challenge conventional wisdom about sex in our time. Mark Zuehlke A full-time writer since 1981, Mark Zuehlke has emerged in recent years as one of Canada’s leading new writers of military history. A prolific writer, he is the author of more than a dozen books and before turning his attention primarily to book writing in 1992 had published several hundred articles in leading Canadian magazines. In 2000 he published his first novel, Hands Like Clouds , which is also the first work in a projected mystery series featuring reluctant coroner Elias McCann and his investigations in the small windswept village of Tofino on Vancouver Island’s west coast.
