COSTS OF ONLINE EDUCATION The cost of online education is the subject of a couple of articles this month in The Chronicle of Higher Education "While distance-education programs are not going under like their dot-com counterparts, administrators are recognizing that the costs of expanding programs are in some cases greater than had been anticipated," writes Sarah Carr in "Is Anyone Making Money on Distance Education?" ( CHE , February 16, 2001, p. A41) And "[s]ome researchers describe the list of potential costs as never-ending and, in the final analysis, unknowable." The article is on the Web at http://chronicle.com/free/v47/i23/23a04101.htm In "Author Says Colleges Must Reallocate Money to Academic Technology" (by Florence Olsen, CHE , February 27, 2001, http://chronicle.com/free/2001/02/2001022701t.htm

EDUCATION AND HOW TO TEACH
For Home Schoolers and Teachers and Administrators in Schools We do not attempt to stock every book written on these subjects, but we do try to promote those we have personally used and found valuable and those that come highly recommended by others we know, and a few we think look interesting but we haven't had time to read yet. If there's a book you want on this subject that's not listed, feel free to ask about it anyway. Chances are we can get it for you. We have not attempted to separate these into books for home schoolers and books for those who teach in public or private schools. We have discovered that many public school teachers attend Christian and other home school conventions during the summer to look for materials not available elsewhere. We know they are there they have walked into our booth. We have also been happy to see that teachers in the private schools where we have held book fairs are excited to find teaching materials written by home schoolers. And home schoolers are quite used to picking up good ideas wherever they find them. We see ourselves as a bit like honeybees facilitating the cross-pollination of the best ideas into homes and schools who want to provide excellent education.

Our Mission
Based at the University of Glasgow, CTICH covers several subjects concerning men and women living in the past, including history, economic and social history, archaeology, and the history of art. CTICH is one of 24 United Kingdom subject-based centres working to encourage better use of computers to improve the quality of Higher Education.
Introduction
The Computers in Teaching Initiative Centre for History, Archaeology and Art History (CTICH) encourages and supports the use of computers to improve the teaching of these subjects at all UK universities and other institutions of higher education. CTICH publications and services are available to academics in UK higher education. CTICH staff are subject specialists with experience in teaching and research, as well as of the application of computers to these subjects. The Centre stresses the use of computers to teach history, archaeology and the history of art, rather than computing itself.

    I. INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this case study is to determine how many College of Communications classes listed in Tennessee 101: A Guide to Courses at the University of Tennessee [ ] have online syllabi, and to evaluate the content of those syllabi. An evaluation instrument is proposed that synthesizes syllabus development criteria and webpage design criteria.
    II. SYLLABUS DEFINITION AND FUNCTIONS
The word "syllabus" is from the Greek sillybos, literally "parchment label." Originally it meant the summary label of a parchment scroll, but it came to mean a summary or outline of a course of academic study. According to Appleby [ ] and Rubin [ ] the course syllabus serves at least seven functions:
    • Helps to plan and strengthen the course. This is what Gabennesch [

Buddhist Discussion Mail Lists: Reflections on Prior Developments and a Proposal for the Creation of a New Kind of Buddhism Discussion List Charles Muller January 19, 2002 Introduction Although it has now been over a decade since the appearance of the first public e-mail discussion lists that dealt with Buddhism, the advancement in the number and sophistication of such lists over this period has not been that significant, especially as compared with developments on the HTML side of the Internet. Indeed, among Buddhism-oriented studies e-mail lists, there have been far more failures than successes. That many lists have already come and gone can be attributed mainly to the fact that those who first took it upon themselves to establish Buddhist studies related mail lists were working in uncharted territory. The field of Buddhist Studies had its own special complexities in terms of list membership and posting content, since the problems inherent in the disparity between expert and non-expert, which face any academic list, were compounded by the opposing tensions to be seen between practitioners, whose basic perspective is that of faith, and scholars, whose orientation, especially in the modern West, is largely positivistic and critical. The First Models: BUDDHIST and BUDDHA-L The only real field-wide list for scholars of Buddhism for most of the past decade has been BUDDHA-L, administered by Richard Hayes of McGill University. Originating during the early nineties, it continues to serve a valuable function today, with a membership of over 800 persons. In response to my request in connection with the composition of the present essay, Prof. Hayes kindly took the time to write a brief history of that list, which goes as follows:
