    The Department of Mass Communications combines Broadcasting, Journalism, and Public Relations tracks in one liberal arts program. We are an academic department offering a balance of theory and practice in the study of mass communication while preparing professionals in broadcasting, journalism, and public relations and improving the lives of people through high-quality, integrated programs in teaching, research, and outreach. We emphasize a strong liberal arts education and rigorous professional preparation for students planning careers in mass media and media-related fields. The department also offers courses analyzing the role of mass media in society. Students and faculty are stimulated to professional communication and creative expression in a variety of media. Students enrolled in our program complete a core of Mass Communication courses as well as academic coursework specific to their Broadcasting, Journalism, or Public Relations tracks.

    Just days after the season's conclusion, more ominous signs are emerging regarding the lockout the NHL will likely endure before another puck drops. Two additional teams are reportedly cutting staff, as the Flyers will not renew the contracts of seven broadcast staffers, and an Ottawa TV report stated the Senators are laying off 14 employees. Also, Mario Lemieux Thursday made some of his strongest comments yet on the Penguins' future in Pittsburgh. Meanwhile, Bob Goodenow is denying a report that the union has presented a new labor proposal to the league.
