Public service broadcasting
Important speech tonight by Roger Mosey , the BBC's head of television news. Mosey makes a number of very interesting points. The vast expansion of choice through the explosion of TV channels has not expanded our society's horizons it has shrunk them into a tawdry and sordid theatre of humiliation, cruelty, degradation and trivia. Naturally, these remarks have already produced sneers from the Beeb's competitors that it is returning to 'paternalism'. But so it should. The whole point of the BBC, and of public service broadcasting, is that it has a mission to educate and elevate as well as to entertain. And that is something the Beeb has departed from in recent years, both in its relatively dumbed-down programming because what Mosey does not acknowledge is the extent to which the BBC too has been dragged down this path and in the corruption of its journalistic standards of objectivity. With the Hutton report looming in front of him, Mosey tackles this issue too. Refreshingly, he states the following: 'The bottom line is this. It is a legitimate aspiration of the BBC to make Britain a better place. But it cannot do this by reflecting through its journalism or factual programming a world which liberals or anyone else wishes would exist: rather, it has to be clear-sighted about the truth and about reality. News is not a function of social engineering'.

Public Service Broadcasting in Asia: Surviving in the New Information Age
, AMIC, Singapore, 168pp. ISBN 9971 905 744
...Reviewed by Pieter Wessels
Commonwealth Journalists' Association, Australia
This is a compilation of mostly well-researched and referenced articles on public service broadcasting in Asia and is crucial to any understanding of what is happening in the region. It covers Pakistan to the Philippines, Japan to Indonesia and most places in between. More importantly, it puts into print much of what has been said about public service broadcasting in recent years.
The biggest concern is the comparison with commercial broadcasting, followed by worries about where public service broadcasting will go in the new digital media age. These concerns led to this book, says AMIC Secretary- General Vijay Menon in his introduction. He concludes that the developing rural economies of Asia still need public service broadcasting and, because they need it, public service broadcasting is not likely to die out in Asia.

PABC is a producer of Christian public service announcements for radio that proclaim God's message of hope to the people of Appalachia.
http://www.pabconline.org
Your mission of evangelism through a positive voice in the media as a ministry of mission to Appalachia and the world in affiliation with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Imagine you are at the office, and you could go home, or you could stay a few more hours and finish up this projectthe boss would sure be happy, but then your mind replays somethng you heard this morning on the radio in the car on the way to work. "What is important to you? Chances are, it's the people you love and the people who love you." You decide at that moment that work can wait, and it would be great to play ball with the kids before it gets dark.
These and similar messages are produced by the Presbyterian Appalachian Broadcasting Council (PABC), a unique ministry of the church. It is not only a ministry of evangelism spreading the hope and good news of Jesus Christ, but it is also a ministry of mission focused on the people of Appalachia. PABC creates and produces radio public service announcements that proclaim the love, hope, and care of the Christian faith as it applies to daily encounters. These spots are then distributed to over 1,300 radio station and all of the presbyteries and synod of the Appalachian area. And NOW, PABC can serve "the world" through the availability of downloadable MP3s on this website. These are free to radio stations to use to share with their listeners.
