Besides taking classes in marketing, advertising, or public relations, what have you done to prepare yourself for a successful transition from student to professional? According to Ginny Shipe, director of professional development and member services for the American Marketing Association (AMA), it’s best to start early on career plans, but you can take steps as a junior or senior to become a professional before you collect your diploma. Network and learn How can you become a professional when you devote most of your time to classes? One step that can take you far is joining relevant professional societies. Many professional organizations have student chapters that offer career-oriented activities and give you opportunities to meet experienced professionals. The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and student chapters of the American Advertising Federation (AAF) and the AMA are three examples of groups you can join at any time during your education. Most offer internship and mentoring programs and competitions that help you learn about the field and build your portfolio while you’re still in school. Richard George, director of public relations, Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), emphasizes that internships are “almost mandatory” to get entry-level jobs because there are so many qualified college graduates who want PR jobs. PRSSA sponsors scholarship and internship programs and a case study competition each year.

he Australian Vice-Chancellors' Committee (AVCC), the council of Australia's university presidents, is once again supporting the universities Public Relations and Marketing Conference. This conference is held every two years and, in 2004, will be held in Sydney, Australia.
Public relations and marketing professionals from Australia's universities regard this event as a must-attend. Networking opportunities, best practice exchange as well as outstanding professional development opportunities make this conference relevant and stimulating as well as a rare opportunity to meet Australian and international colleagues.
The format for 2004 has been changed in response to the varying and increasing demands being made on the sector and the vision that we make this opportunity truly global, sharing professional development and networking opportunities with international colleagues.
Building Relationships has been adopted as the theme for the 2004 Conference. The Conference will commence on the afternoon of Wednesday 27 October. The opening session will feature a debate between a media personality and at least one Australian Vice-Chancellor followed by a cocktail party. The remaining days will consist of two keynote addresses and six one-hour seminar sessions culminating in a lunch and announcement of future initiatives. The terms are often used interchangeably. However, they refer to different but similar activities. Some basic definitions are provided below. A short example is also provided hopefully to help make the terms more clear to the reader. One Definition of Advertising
Advertising is bringing a product (or service) to the attention of potential and current customers. Advertising is typically done with signs, brochures, commercials, direct mailings or e-mail messages, personal contact, etc. One Definition of Promotion
Promotion keeps the product in the minds of the customer and helps stimulate demand for the product. Promotion involves ongoing advertising and publicity (mention in the press). The ongoing activities of advertising, sales and public relations are often considered aspects of promotions. One Definition of Marketing
Marketing is the wide range of activities involved in making sure that you're continuing to meet the needs of your customers and getting value in return. These activities include market research to find out, for example, what groups of potential customers exist, what their needs are, which of those needs you can meet, how you should meet them, etc. Marketing also includes analyzing the competition, positioning your new product or service (finding your market niche), pricing your products and services, and promoting them through continued advertising, promotions, public relations and sales.

Public relations activities include helping the public to understand the organization and its products. Similar to effective advertising and promotions, effective public relations often depends on designing and implementing a well-designed public relations plan. The plan often includes description of what you want to convey to whom, how you plan to convey it, who is responsible for various activities and by when, and how much money is budgeted to fund these activities. Similar to advertising and promotions, a media plan and calendar can be very useful, which specifies what media methods that are used and when. Often, public relations are conducted through the media, that is, newspapers, television, magazines, etc. Publicity is mention in the media. Organizations usually have little control over the message in the media, at least, not as much as they do in advertising. Regarding publicity, reporters and writers decide what will be said.
