Safe Schools and Successful Learning : There IS an Answer
by Bonnie Benard
Posted with permission from the CYD Journal , Vol.2, No.3, Summer 2001. Meeting young people’s developmental needs for safety, love and belonging, respect, mastery, challenge, power and autonomy, and meaning is a necessity that lies at the heart of all good schooling. While this is just common sense to some, to others, in our age of standards-driven educational reform and get-tough-on-youth social policies, it sounds like a radical notion. In this article Bonnie Benard describes these seven fundamental needs and offers practical suggestions for applying these principles in the classroom. Schools need to teach our kids how much they matter. If they don’t, we will see Santana and Columbine copycat shootings again and again.
—Meredith Maran
These prophetic words, written barely two weeks before the latest school shooting in El Cahon, California, succinctly state the challenge for educators in America: to teach our young people that they matter—that their lives have a purpose and that they can make a difference in creating a better world. It is time to speak loudly and boldly to educators and policymakers alike. There is an answer to preventing the violence that has racked our schools and it lies in the principles and practices of Community Youth Development. Indeed, these same practices and principles are also those associated with students’ academic success. We will never achieve safe schools or high academic standards unless and until we employ the research knowledge we have gained on healthy child and youth development practices, and intentionally focus on the inborn developmental wisdom, the innate resilience, and the intrinsic motivation that drive the CYD process.

NEFE High School Financial Planning Program
1. Identify prospects
The HSFPP is appropriate for all high school students and can be successfully integrated into several subjects, such as economics, math, consumer/life sciences, and social studies. It is written at an 8th-grade reading level. Contact NEFE (303-224-3510; eas@nefe.org ) to see if any teachers in your area have asked for volunteers to help teach the program or to add your name to the volunteer list. To find new candidates, consider teachers your child has had, ask parents for suggestions, and seek recommendations of top teachers at PTA/PTO meetings. 2. Prepare your case
Demonstrate your willingness and ability to teach by summarizing program content and making the following points:
  • Youth financial illiteracy is rampant (share "Our Vulnerable Youth" summary)
  • The HSFPP puts curriculum concepts into a real-life context
  • HSFPP classroom materials and team-teaching assistance are provided as a public service at no charge
  • The HSFPP does not sell financial services or promote specific institutions
  • The HSFPP develops students' decision-making abilities, sense of financial responsibility, and long-term confidence about money management (share "

http://www.pisd.edu/AOS/General/discipline.htm
"Understanding Students" is the title of the discipline management program for the Plano Independent School District. The focus of the program is the student's awareness that a school and parent partnership is formed to address the needs and problems of the student. The root cause of a student's unacceptable behavior must be dealt with through the program if the student's behavior is to be changed. A positive plan will be developed to help the student to change inappropriate behavior. The main goal of "Understanding Students" is to encourage students' academic progress so that they can become positive contributors to school and to society. Throughout this plan, "parents" include single parent, legal guardian, or person having lawful control of the student. Also, "he" refers to both male and female students. The "Understanding Students" program of discipline management was developed through individual conferences with principals in Plano ISD. Parental input was gained from a 25-member Parents in Action group from one of the senior high schools and from the Presidents' Council of the PTA/PTO/PTSA/PTSO which had a parent representative from each school in the district. Student input was obtained from senior high school student senates (approximately 60 students). Also, two conferences were held with officials at the Region 10 Education Service Center. All persons who had provided input unanimously endorsed the plan, which was adopted by the School Board.

The goal of Rock Solid Character (RSC) is to provide the most POWERFUL character education program to students, parents and school officials. We achieve this with the help of 24 and 25 foot portable rock climbing walls, action-based activities, enthusiastic instructors and insightful support lesson plans. RSC is proud to introduce our year-round character curriculum called, "Get a GRIP on Character" for grades K through 8th. Is it possible for students to learn about positive character development through rock climbing?
ABSOLUTELY! Rock Solid Character's rock is a perfect metaphor for the "climb of life." Students learn that life is full of challenges and that in order to be successful they must get a GRIP on "handholds of character." Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Trustworthiness, Caring/Cooperation, Courage and Perseverance are the universal character traits RSC calls the "7 Handholds for Success." By coupling a positive lesson with an exciting adventure . . . students remember! Is this activity SAFE?

We will revisit some of these topics when our programming resumes next fall, with thirteen new episodes. We also hope that this premier season has served to introduce Michigan Gateways as an important resource for teachers, and a forum for ideas and analysis. With the introduction over, we would like to hear from you. Your comments on our program can help us shape our series as we plan a full season of broadcasts to begin in the fall. We also plan to include a new Educator Forum feature a place to air your questions, concerns and comments about the current progress of reform in math and science education. Our address is on the back page. We look forward to hearing from you.

  • Develop materials that parents can use with their children when they don’t have time to participate in school activities. Parents can support younger children with “drive time” activities, i.e. things that can be done in the car. For example, they can play tapes of recommended literature for the child’s age group, rather than listening to whatever is on the radio. Send lists of websites to parents – good, educational sites that parents and children can both utilize to explore a variety of subjects. Web pages used by schools and teachers to list homework and other types of information – Homework online. There are web sites which enable a teacher to set up (for free) his/her own web site for the class, to post information about the day’s activities – useful for children who’ve been absent. Some districts have these, too. What information could be provided to parents of high school students about how to support their children’s academic work? Parents often say that their children are doing more advanced work than they did when they were in school. They want to help but don’t know how.

Districts turn to parents to play bigger roles
    By TERRY KLIEWER
In this era of swelling enrollments, tight budgets and politicized family values, Americans are being told the key to success in public education can be summed up in one word: parents. Everyone from President Clinton down is urging parents to take a more active role in their children's schooling. The old days when parents met teachers once a year at open house, went to the Halloween carnival and chipped in at candy sale time now seem quaint. Under the new regimen, parents are handing out textbooks, replacing playgrounds, tutoring slow students in reading and helping fast ones pick a college. They help to run student detention programs. They "room-sit" for teachers called away to other things. They meet and greet school visitors. While big school districts may have special staffs to garner commercial and corporate support, smaller districts often turn to parents and volunteers to help identify and go after business and civic donors. Volunteerism in all its forms private-sector support, plus parents' and others' donations of time and effort can add up to substantial sums for cash-strapped school districts.

At a time of budget cuts for education, students and teachers in Highwood and Highland Park have the District 112 Education Foundation as a resource to add depth to their learning. Experiences can range from up-links to astronauts or dancing with the Highland Park High School Latino Dance Troupe. Foundation members gathered Jan. 22 to review their progress, look at future possibilities and give their annual A+ Award to the PTA-PTO Council of the district. This year, members want to make themselves more widely known to improve their funding success and to bring better educational experiences to teachers and students in all district schools. "Our district prides itself on being the best, and you can't do that if you're cutting corners," said Steve Temkin, vice chairman of the Foundation. The Foundation meeting satisfies a legal obligation for their non-profit status, but President Diane Moore said the gathering really provides a sense of renewal for the board members. They have a chance to see results of their grant funding. "That is the best medicine," said Moore. "It can be (financially) difficult for some kids to participate," said Moore.
