OAS_AD('Top'); PTA Politics Blamed for Organization's Low Membership Monday, June 11, 2001 By Jon Du Pre OAS_AD('Middle'); "Very publicly, they say, ‘We want to be the voice in Washington for children,’" said Tim Sullivan of PTO Today, a multi-media company dedicated to helping parent groups help their schools. "It’s a great goal. I wish them all the luck in the world." The century-old PTA is the first national parent-teacher organization established in this country. But lately it’s been criticized for its close relationship with teachers’ unions and for its positions on political issues like school vouchers and Bush’s tax cut, which it opposes, and the Million Mom March and sex education, which it supports. "PTA is a child advocacy organization," said local PTA president Cynthia Chaney. "We are here for the benefit of all children; we are here to teach tolerance." That agenda has the organization struggling with floundering membership, which is half the size it was 30 years ago. Many communities have started their own groups, in which they feel their voices will be heard and PTA politics left out. "I hear people say, ‘Golly the PTA says vouchers are bad, but I like vouchers. Why would I want to be part of a group which is against my personal opinion?’" said Sullivan.

How to Make the Most of an Author Visit to Your School
by Bruce Lansky
As a children's poet, I have made hundreds of visits to schools for poetry assemblies, classroom writing workshops, teacher trainings, and PTA/PTO events. While I've enjoyed all of these events, some visits were definitely more valuable for the participants than others. I'm convinced that the difference between a successful author visit and one that wastes everyone's time and money is a little advance preparation by the school's teachers, students, and parents.
Here are some tips to help any school get the most out of their next author visit:
A. Finding an Appropriate Author Have you ever had an author visit your school who wrote wonderful books but was not an enthusiastic or motivating performer? Not every author is as good at presenting their material in person as they are at writing or illustrating. Some authors are better at handling big groups. Some are better with small groups. Some want to talk about their latest book. Some want to talk about the process of writing or illustrating. The best way to make both you and the author happy is to spend a little time and effort searching for the right author for your particular needs.
Here are some things to keep in mind as you search for an appropriate author:
  • Look for authors at local, state, or regional reading and/or library conferences. Make sure that you are as comfortable with the author's presentation style as you are with the author's books.

by Dolores Winchell, var linktext = "Send email"; var email1 = "president"; var email2 = "svpta.org"; document.write("" + linktext + "") //> Springtime Greetings, Most of you should have already completed your election process. Please be sure you invite the incoming president to be your guest at the installation dinner on May 22. This is a legitimate PTA expense, please make sure you RSVP promptly to Linda Ball, so we have enough dinners for all attendees. NEW OFFICERS / TRAINING Once your slate is voted in and full, offer to assist your president-elect with recruitment of all the remaining board chairman positions. It is best to end the school year with every position filled so that folks are committed and know what they will be doing next school year. This is also an excellent opportunity to offer all the training that will be available to your chairman. For program chairmen, there is always the Program Preview Days at the Performing Arts Center. If possible, you should sponsor your program chairman and a teacher to attend this wonderful event, so they may choose next year's programs together. On the evening of June 5, Saddleback Valley Council will host its annual training workshops for all officer positions including Membership, Reflections and Legislation Chairmen. At this time we are still planning, so watch for more detailed information to be sent out in May. Additionally, the Fourth District PTA is sponsoring two days of training, the evening of May 28 and the morning of May 29. These workshops will be similar to the workshops we hold in June, so please ask folks to attend at least one training with either the Fourth District PTA or Saddleback. I would love to see all the incoming presidents at the Saddleback workshops. Hopefully with all these choices of dates, all new officers and chairmen will be able to attend.

Principals' Top 10 Practices to Improve School-Family Partnerships
What are the best things a principal can do to cultivate a family-friendly school environment that enriches learning for all students and makes the school a place where families feel welcome and valued? Here's a "top ten" list of family-school partnership practices that principals say really works for them:
  • The Committee or Action Team Convene a team of parents, teachers, community representatives, and the principal to develop and coordinate partnership plans and activities. Include PTA/PTO representatives and family members from all sectors of your school population. Start by assessing how your school presently reaches out to families, then survey parents and teachers to find out what areas they think the school needs to address. Give committee members responsibility for coordinating projects to create ownership in family-school partnerships and to ease the principal's burden.
  • Volunteering Recruit parents, senior citizens, and other students to volunteer. Make it possible for everyone to volunteer in some way at school, home, or school events. Survey parents to find out their special hobbies or interests, then act upon the information contained in those surveys! Appoint a volunteer coordinator to survey school staff, and oversee the training and scheduling of volunteers. Don't forget to recognize volunteers' contributions.
  • Family Learning Opportunities Family Math, Family Science, Family Tools and Technology, and other family learning programs are an excellent way to encourage parents, guardians, and children to learn together in planned, meaningful activities. Families work cooperatively, reasoning and thinking logically to solve problems. Facilitators can usually be obtained through CESAs or university staff. Get fathers on board by offering some opportunities tailored for them to learn with children.

    A New Agenda for Responding

I n my observation of students advancing through our educational system, I have noticed that students who have the ability to deal effectively with conflict tend to have a stronger perception of their abilities, talents and, subsequently, themselves. This perceived ability to deal positively with conflict situations seems to extend to the adult population. As adults, we seek out and admire those individuals who we perceive can help us when conflict arises in our environment. If such a perception is accurate, it is incumbent upon the educational system to teach students how to effectively deal with conflict in their school and home situations. The use of mediation as a conflict resolution process can be established as an ongoing program within the school setting. This article will focus on the promotion of mediation as a conflict resolution process in our schools. Strategies to develop and
implement the program and ongoing opportunities for participants to improve their mediation
techniques and skills will be presented.
