How the human psyche reflects and creates the world
RELATIVITY IN PSYCHOLOGY: ( Explaination for non-specialists) Any reader can see for himself (or herself) the relativity of his subjective clock. Make one of your needs actual; for example, you can deny yourself water. There is one necessary condition: you know that you'll get water in 24 hours. Note during the experiment "10 equal time intervals" every hour and you'll see yourself if your subjective clock goes fast or slowly in reference to the ofjective time. Speaking about the difficulty of the object of psychology, the founder of the relativity theory A.Einstein said: "Understanding the atom is the childish game in comparison with the understanding of the childish game."

Welcome to the General Psychology e-text! These pages were originally created for the students of my General Psychology classes at Shippensburg University. They deal with most of the issues covered in standard textbooks, but without the outrageous price tags. Psychology is the study of the mind, along with such aspects of mind as perception, cognition, emotion, and behavior. In some ways, it has only been around since the late 1800's, when people like Wilhelm Wundt, William James, and Sigmund Freud separated it from its various mother disciplines such as biology, philosophy, and medicine. But in other ways, it has been around as long as human beings have been discussing human beings. I suspect that cavemen and cavewomen probably sat around the fire talking about the same things we do: How come their kids are weird, why can't men and women get along better, what's with those folks from the next valley, how come old Zook hasn't been the same since that rock hit him, and what do dreams really mean. Today, Psychology tries to be a science. Science is the effort to study a subject with an explicit promise to think as logically and stick to the empirical facts as tightly as is humanly possible. Other sciences chemistry, physics, biology, and so on have had great success this way. Our cave-person ancestors would be astounded at our understanding of the world around us! But the subject matter of Psychology (and the other human sciences) is harder to pin down. We human beings are not as cooperative as some green goo in a test tube! It is a nearly impossible situation: To study the very thing that studies, to research the researcher, to psychoanalyze the psychoanalyst.

Should Psychologists Resign from APA?

"The American Psychological Association (APA) is a voluntary member-supported organization of psychologists. They've done some good things, but their Ethics Committee has the power to sanction psychologists, even if courts and licensing boards have found them innocent. Some psychologists are advocating that APA members resig," Leonard Holmes, Ph.D, Guide to Mental Health Resources for About.com. Read more

Dean's Message
Here in the Graduate Psychology Program at New College of California we are pleased to offer a degree program in clinical psychology that is innovative as well as one of the best in the country. We believe that today in North America psychology is in crisis. Therefore, our approach to psychology differs from that taken by mainstream academic thought. As a result, our program trains clinicians who will remain community activists.
Knowledge can either liberate us or alienate us. Our Psychology Program provides our s tudents with knowledge of the human mind as well as its potential for helping individuals change themselves and the world. Because we believe that the epistemology and methodology of psychology should be embedded in the historical and social foundations of individual experience, our students observe and analyze this close relationship between the individual and the socio-historical in current conditions. They learn vital lessons that they c an apply in their everyday practice as therapists in training and as agents of social change.
