Analytical Meaning of Sacrifice
If, as Jung tells us, we worship as divine the life energies that flow through us, (1991, 83) then the release or the harnessing of new energies will be experienced as an incarnational event. For the individual who has been gripped by his/her own inner, autonomous energies, the one whose ego has entered into a cooperative relationship with those energies, incarnation becomes a matter of life and death. The relationship is also a great paradox because the refusal of the energies is a refusal of life while the embrace of the new energy can be felt as the death of some vital part of one’s identity. In other words, incarnation requires sacrifice, and sacrifice entails suffering. Sacrifice (making sacred), Incarnation (giving flesh to) and consciousness (a knowing with) are closely related terms. All three imply the presence of an Other . In this way of understanding the psychological nature of the human person, ego consciousness is the repository for incarnating energies.

General Advice
Got 5 Minutes For Science?
Click here to complete a short questionnaire!
  • Is graduate school really for you? This is the most important question to ask yourself as you are thinking about applying. Graduate school is a time-consuming and expensive commitment. Make sure you talk to a lot of people and do a lot of internet research so that you know what you're getting into before you decide to apply. Graduate school can be extremely rewarding, but only if you are passionately interested in whatever it is that you are interested in studying.
  • Are there any absolute rules that you can follow to ensure that you are admitted? No. No matter what your qualifications are, it is impossible to predict with absolute certainty whether you will be admitted to certain programs or not. Obviously, better students will get more acceptance letters than poor students, but factors outside of your control are going to play a big part in where you are admitted. So keep in mind that the rest of the advice on this page includes general guidelinesthere are no guarantees.
  • What are the most important strengths that an applicant can have?

    General Information
Oldest Continuous Psychological Laboratory in America
Indiana University is the location of the oldest continuing psychology laboratory in America. William Lowe Bryan , a future president of the American Psychological Association (1903) and Indiana University (1902- 1937), opened the laboratory in January of 1888. A student of Hermann Ebbinghaus and G. Stanley Hall, Bryan did his initial work on the relation between reaction time and intensity of stimulation, as well as on the development of voluntary motor ability in children. However, he is most famous for his classic experiments on human Morse Code learning. Those studies revealed "plateaus" (definite periods of no improvement) in learning curves and suggested that acquisition of a complicated skill involves successive mastery of a hierarchy of habits. The project was one of the first to provide data on the role of automaticity in human learning and memory, a hot topic in contemporary cognitive psychology. Bryan's studies were the impetus for the strong experimental emphasis that has characterized psychology at Indiana up to the present day. The reputation of the department is based more on traditions of broad empirical investigation than sponsorship of any definite school of psychological thought even though leading thinkers like
