UM PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSOR RECEIVES GRANT TO TRACK LIFE-LONG SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT

CORAL GABLES, FL - University of Miami Associate Professor of Psychology and Religious Studies Michael E. McCullough received an $83,000 grant from the Metanexus Institute on Religion and Science, a national organization that advances education, research and outreach on the constructive engagement of science and religion.
Professor McCullough's two-year study will analyze spiritual transformations across the adult life span and their links to other important areas of human development - personality, family environment, serious life events and health. The study will use data collected from the Terman Longitudinal Study, a project launched by Stanford University psychologist Lewis Terman in 1921, which followed more than 1,500 boys and girls ages 3 to 19 over their lifetime.
McCullough's study will provide an increased understanding of a relatively new and burgeoning area of scientific research." As the American population ages and more individuals reach the outer range of life expectancy, it is important to study human development across the entire life span. This research will look at the various pathways spiritual development takes throughout adulthood, how these are affected by life changes and what impact they have on areas such as happiness, life satisfaction, and response to major life crises, " says McCullough.

The first year courses provide a general introduction to a very broad field of study; at 200 and 300 levels, students choose courses which reflect their particular interests or their plans for employment or further study.
The second year courses take students further into areas that were introduced in the first year. Second year subjects include the role of education in society, and educational psychology, studies in adolescence and cultural issues in education. The 200 level courses are all three points.

Arizona State University I wish to thank BethAnn Berliner for her editing and her coaching in historiography, as well as the two anonymous reviewers, who gave many thoughtful suggestions and additional references. We can date the emergence of the discipline of educational psychology to the same year in which Granville Stanley Hall called 26 colleagues to his study to organize the American Psychological Association (APA) (Hothersall, 1984). Thus, when the APA recently celebrated its centennial, we in the Division of Educational Psychology, Division 15, felt like the party was for us. From the very beginning of the APA, psychoeducational issues were important to our leaders, and those issues influenced the growth of academic and scientific psychology. In what follows, I describe the founding years of both general and educational psychology, noting the important individuals of those times and their influence on our discipline. The time period for those events was approximately 1890 to 1910, the same years that saw American psychology separate from its European roots and grow into a uniquely American discipline. But, we should remember that our field began long before that time. The Origins of Educational Psychology
Our field probably started unnoticed and undi

RELIGION
Developed by: W. Huitt
Last revised: October 2000 Educational Psychology Interactive Bill Huitt's Home Page The term religion has its origin in the Latin religere , which means to bind fast, to moor, or to unite. It is an activity that is found in every society and culture throughout human history. According to the American Heritage Dictionary (1996), religion is defined as:
  • a. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe; b. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship. The life or condition of a person in a religious order. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader. A cause, a principle, or an activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion.
  • Khavari (1999) states that religions have several basic features:
    • the claim that there is a Creator the clear set of statements about right and wrong the requirement for obedience to its teachings the promise of reward for the faithful and punishment for the rebellious the emphasis on the heart and feelings, rather than the mind and reason. (p. 42)

How To Become a Child Psychologist
I receive many email request for information on how someone becomes a child psychologist. Here is some basic information. Fist, check your states requirements for licensure. In order to practice as a psychologist in any state, you must hold a license issued by that state. Each state may be a little different. Your best bet is to contact the licensing authority in the state in which you desire to practice. For example, if your objective is to end up practicing in California, you would check with the California Board of Psychology, and ask them to mail you information about licensing , or you can read the online summary posted at their web site. Keep in mind that each state is different, and you cannot practice in any other state unless licensed in that state. Note that a psychology license in most states is a generic license, and states do not license "child" psychologists, or clinical psychologists or any other specialty of psychology, they just license generic psychologists. When someone calls themselves a "child psychologist" they simply mean they are licensed as a psychologist, and then limit their practice to children. Hence if you want to be a "child psychologist" you would start by simply obtaining a generic psychology license by complying with the requirements for licensure in the state in which you desire to practice. Second, obtain the necessary educational background.

Access to higher education in Uruguay depends only upon presentation of a bachillerato, which indicates completion of the secondary school preparatory cycle. There is no entrance exam. The two-year preparatory cycle follows the basic four years of secondary school and is oriented specifically toward the area of study that the student will pursue at the university level. Although most higher education in Uruguay is free, the high cost of living in Montevideo discourages many potential students who come from low-income or rural backgrounds. The university is composed of facultades, analogous to academic departments in the U.S. system. Facultades, however, tend to be fairly autonomous in their administration. Degrees offered include the licenciado and professional titles. All degrees are awarded upon completion of three to six years of study, depending on the discipline. Uruguay follows the Southern Hemisphere calendar . Therefore, when applying for an academic year exchange, students will find it beneficial to begin their studies during the U.S. second term. The academic year runs from March to November. Grades awarded are S (

Science (from scientia, Latin for "knowledge") refers to the systematic acquisition of new knowledge about nature and the body of already existing knowledge so gained. The scientific method is based on careful observation and the testing of theories by experiment. Science does not claim to make any statements about how nature actually "is", for the scientist should know that we can only make conclusions about our observations of nature. The development of Quantum Mechanics in the early 20th century showed us that our observations equate to interactions, and the incredible implications of wave-particle duality made "objectivity" in science practically impossible.

    Knowledge is a Force
Education is the valuable treasure, together with wisdom is the greatest wealth, it lights up soul, fills the life with light. Education as transition from not clear, invisible to the world of clear - to sources of understanding, knowledge and skills. It is the systematized process of mastering of knowledge. Training shines to us a way to the great purpose. The purpose - to understand ourselves, people, an environment, the world. Children shine our life so they are light which should be supported by heat to shine more brightly. If to open their directions - ways to their own aims, their abilities and talents, the future inspirations, inventions will open, will occure a desire to create and be educated. The sin and ignorance begin there where there is no knowledge. The true education begins in family, the true training - in an educational institution: at school which enters into an education system where there is a set of establishments for training. There are also higher schools which try to concentrate all particles of knowledge from which it would be possible to choose for itself what are pleasant and in what of them to be engaged in life further.

Print version: page 42 The old adage that "the only constant in life is change" seems an appropriate lead-in to my thoughts this month, as I reflect on the mission of APA's Education Directorate and its many, diverse activities. Our mission, put simply, is "to advance education and training in psychology as well as the application of psychology to education." To fulfill this mission, our efforts are focused on three broad goals: * Enhancing the quality of teaching and learning outcomes at all levels of education and training. * Meeting the demands of changing societal needs in a multicultural society through education and training. * Increasing the level and availability of financial and public-policy support for education and training. Change is explicit or implicit in each of these goals. Intrinsically, change is neither favorable nor unfavorable, of course. Rather, as with beauty, its value is in the eyes of the beholder or, in other words, contextual. In the context of education, the Education Directorate and Board of Educational Affairs strive to meet the goals of their mission through collaboration with other psychologists representing groups and organizations within and outside APA.
