66. A Psychology Student Handbook-Applying To Grad School
HOW TO APPLY TO GRADUATE (school). Admission into graduate programs in psychology canbe quite competitive than lower quality programs in general doctoral programs
http://psych.hanover.edu/handbook/applic2.html
HOW TO APPLY TO GRADUATE SCHOOL
REPRINTED FROM THE APS OBSERVER, SEPTEMBER 1989 Admission into graduate programs in psychology can be quite competitive. High quality programs are, of course, more competitive than lower quality programs in general doctoral programs are more difficult to get in than master's programs. Usually applied programs more difficult to get in than basic programs. The primary determinant of success in applying for graduate school is the quality of your background and abilities. But these qualities are not assessed magically. They are evaluated on the basis of a limited number of kinds of information. The purpose of this article is to review those kinds of information for the purpose of understanding the process.
ASSEMBLING A COMPETITIVE APPLICATION
Graduate Record Exams and Other Admission Tests
Most graduate admissions committees require the GRE, and a few still require the MST. These scores will often be interpreted as a measure of the student's general intellectual ability and likelihood of success in graduate school. Thus, it is wise to obtain the best scores you possibly can. Some believe that it is impossible to study for these exams, but it is not true. For example, if you haven't taken a mathematics course in some time, review of this material can be quite helpful. If you are unsure how to take tests of this type, examination of one of the many books on the market about the GREs may help. Students have been known to pull up their scores greatly through careful preparation.

The standard clinical doctoral programs at CSPP begin with entry at the graduate level and lead to the PsyD or PhD through a sequence of courses and field experiences integrating theory, research and practice. In the first and second years, all programs provide an extensive background in the foundations of psychology; they develop the basic scientific understanding and practice skills. Students participate in clerkship or practicum experience requiring 8-20 hours of student time per week in their choice of degree program and campus. At the second year or third year, students must pass formal evaluations to be advanced to doctoral candidacy. Evaluations, which may include written comprehensive or preliminary examinations, focus a student's academic ability, expected competency in research, interpersonal competencies, and understanding of the basic theoretical foundations in psychology.

    Graduate Program in School Psychology
    Mission and Objectives
Today's school psychologists must function as effective educational consultants, intervention strategists and counselors in addition to their historical role as psychometricians. Our goal is to prepare professionals who manifest a holistic blend of theory and practice in meeting the educational advantage of today's students within the interacting contexts of their schools, families and communities. At Marist College, students interested in pursuing study towards New York State certification in school psychology have two options: an MA in School Psychology or an Advanced Certificate in School Psychology. Marist's school psychology programs focus on instruction in theory and skills associated with five roles regularly encountered by a school psychologist: facilitator in understanding human behavior; counselor; psychological/educational examiner; consultant and information specialist/intervention strategist. Following New York State Educational Department (NYSED) regulations, the academic qualifications for permanent certification as a school psychologist requires sixty-two semester hours of graduate study inclusive of a college supervised practicum experience and internship in the field of school psychology. Within the total program of preparation as a school psychologist, the candidate must complete a masters degree.
