XIII. Graduate School In Psychology
Before discussing such topics as "Applying to Graduate School", it might be helpful to give a brief summary of just what graduate school is. Graduate school is post-graduate education, taking an average of 2 years for the Master's degree and 4-5 years total for the Ph.D. ("doctoral") degree (5-6 years in clinical or counseling psychology). There are a number of significant ways in which graduate school differs from your undergraduate experience. First, the credit-hour load will be lighter in graduate school. Nine or twelve credits, rather than 15-18, per semester is a typical graduate load. You can, however, presume that each course will demand a fair amount of time. Second, you will take psychology courses almost exclusively. Third, your professors will give you more freedom, and thus increased responsibility, regarding the entire learning process ranging from completion of assigned work (no one will nag you!), selection of courses, class attendance, etc. In a phrase, you will be expected to develop into mature, independent scholars. Fourth, class sizes will be smaller. Some seminar courses will have as few as four students, in which each is expected to master a special topic and "teach" his or her fellow students. In lecture courses, the professor will often expect you to master the textbook, while he or she talks about related material. In addition, scholarly work in the library is often expected. Finally, you will probably experience a closer bond between yourself, fellow students, and your professors due to the preceding points and also to the smaller student/faculty ratio. Many people find that the tight psychological and social bonds formed in graduate school remain throughout their lives.

Training in the field of community psychology can be obtained in a variety of ways. Students may decide to enroll in a clinical-community program or a community program on either the doctoral or masters degree levels. The graduate school listing is in alphabetical order by program type and degree. The listings include a link to the college or university's home page, the department's home page, the program contact, and information on obtaining an application and further information. Graduate school programs in community psychology and in general vary greatly in program quality. Listings have been provided for those programs that appear to offer some level of masters or doctoral training in community psychology. This listing is not meant to be the "be all" and "end all" in community psychology training programs nor is it meant to be an endorsement from CPN that these programs meet any quality standard. It is mearly meant to be a starting point to obtain general information and begin your research. Several other program factors need to be investigated and considered including faculty interests, faculty-student ratio, accredidation, post graduate placements, financial aid, etc. Several well written texts that may help you in this process are available in the Community Psychology Network's bookstore for more information on the search for graduate school placement If you are looking for a brief description of a particular program that is not "linked" to here then try the CPDRA study of graduate programs provided by SCRA and Michigan State University. If your program has been missed or information is incorrect, then please send an e-mail to the

GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY CURRICULUM
Program Advisor: Dr. Laurence Miller
The General Psychology program provides students with a strong background in psychology. The program provides coursework stressing basic and fundamental knowledge of the various aspects of behavior. Most students complete the program in two years. A concentration within the General Psychology program in Measurement, Evaluation, and Statistical Analysis (MESA) is available. Refer to the Western Washington University 2003-2004 Bulletin for additional information.
The General Psychology program provides a solid preparation and foundation for students wishing to enter a Ph.D. program. A number of our students have been admitted into various Ph.D. programs at universities throughout the country, and have fared well in these programs. Students who prefer to obtain a terminal Masters degree in General Psychology and not continue on for the doctorate have also been successful in using their graduate training in a variety of settings. Our graduates have obtained positions such as community college instructors, statisticians working for state government, halfway house supervisors, social workers, and research assistants.

General Information The M.S.Ed./Psy.D Program in School Psychology carefully integrates field experience with academic preparation. Students are trained in psychological foundations, assessment and evaluation techniques, remediation and intervention procedures, and program evaluation and research. Although research methodology and theoretical academic subjects are essential parts of the program, emphasis is placed on professional preparation in the delivery of psychological services. Graduates of the doctoral program will have completed all pre-doctoral academic and internship requirements needed to sit for the New York State Licensing Examination for the professional practice of psychology, a Master of Science in Education in School Psychology (or equivalent program in school psychology), and be recommended for a New York State Certificate of Qualification in School Psychology. Full-Time or Part-Time Study Students may undertake the program on a full- or part-time basis with the exception of the final year, when they typically devote full time to an internship. Class hours permit field work and generally allow for part-time employment in the first four years of study. Wherever possible, paid internships are arranged in order to help alleviate the financial expense involved.
