General Advice
Got 5 Minutes For Science?

  • Is graduate school really for you? This is the most important question to ask yourself as you are thinking about applying. Graduate school is a time-consuming and expensive commitment. Make sure you talk to a lot of people and do a lot of internet research so that you know what you're getting into before you decide to apply. Graduate school can be extremely rewarding, but only if you are passionately interested in whatever it is that you are interested in studying.
  • Are there any absolute rules that you can follow to ensure that you are admitted? No. No matter what your qualifications are, it is impossible to predict with absolute certainty whether you will be admitted to certain programs or not. Obviously, better students will get more acceptance letters than poor students, but factors outside of your control are going to play a big part in where you are admitted. So keep in mind that the rest of the advice on this page includes general guidelinesthere are no guarantees.
  • What are the most important strengths that an applicant can have?

Key Information from the School Psychology Review
The School Psychology Review is a refereed journal published quarterly by the National Association of School Psychologists. The primary purpose of the School Psychology Review is to impact the delivery of school psychological services by publishing scholarly advances in research, training, and practice. School Psychology Review seeks original research, reviews of theoretical and applied topics, case studies, and descriptions of intervention techniques useful to psychologists working in educational settings. Portions of two or three issues each year are reserved for mini-series on themes deemed by the Editorial Advisory Board to be of major interest to practitioners of school psychology. The majority of journal space, however, is open for unsolicited manuscripts covering a wide range of topics. All manuscripts submitted for review are subject to a masked, peer-review process involving members of the Editorial Advisory Board and ad hoc reviewers.

Psychology at Clark has a very distinguished past. From the 1890s to the 1920s, Clark was the international center for the study of Psychology, and most of the Psychology journals in the United States were once published by the Clark University Press. Noted Psychologist G. Stanley Hall, the University's first president, founded the American Psychological Association at Clark in 1892. Another leading Psychologist, Heinz Werner, came to the University in the 1950s and established the unique character of Psychology at Clark as thoughtful and empirically rigorous, with strong international connections. This distinguished past is the basis for our present teaching and research and future goals. We continue to develop Psychological science at its best, linking theoretical perspectives with empirical work. We are one of few Psychology departments in the United States that provide students with a background in both quantitative and qualitative methodology. Although aligned with the general developmental science perspective that is at the forefront of contemporary Psychology, our faculty adhere to a variety of theoretical orientations, which allows us to promote new ideas.
