Videos ABOUT US Healthcommunities.com Pressroom Testimonials print this ... email this Overview Adenocarcinoma of the prostate is the clinical term for a cancerous tumor on the prostate gland. As prostate cancer grows, it may spread to the interior of the gland, to tissues near the prostate, to sac-like structures attached to the prostate (seminal vesicles), and to distant parts of the body (e.g., bones, liver, lungs). Prostate cancer confined to the gland often is treated successfully. Anatomy The prostate gland is located in the pelvis, below the bladder, above the urethral sphincter and the penis, and in front of the rectum in men. It is made up of glandular tissue and muscle fibers that surround a portion of the urethra. The gland is covered by a membrane (called the prostate capsule) that produces prostate-specific antigen.

  • The prostate surrounds the urethra, which is a tubular structure that carries sperm and urine out of the penis.
It produces a thin, milky fluid that is added to the sperm at the time of ejaculation.
Older men often have an enlarged prostate, which is a noncancerous condition called benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) that causes urinary symptoms.

Prostate Cancer:
New Tests Create Treatment Dilemmas
by John Henkel The names are familiar: actors Don Ameche, Bill Bixby, and Telly Savalas, entertainment mogul Steve Ross, rock musician Frank Zappa. Though show business links these men, they share another connection. Each has died of prostate cancer. If there's a silver lining to be found amid the clouds of these tragic deaths, it is that the fame of these men has helped spotlight a disease that now ranks as the second most common cancer men getafter skin cancer. The American Cancer Society says prostate cancer will strike 334,500 U.S. men in 1997, twice the number of male lung cancer cases. Some 41,800 will die. One out of every five American men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. Public notice is something new to prostate cancer. For years, men didn't worry much about the disease. They typically thought of it as a slow-moving condition that affects men well past retirement, when they are likely to die of something else before succumbing to cancer. In many cases, that's still true. Most cases are in men 65 and older. But like Bixby, who was 59 when he died, and Zappa, who was 52, younger men also can fall victim.

Prostate cancer risk linked to testosterone level
YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Cancer Diseases or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? WASHINGTON (Reuters) Men over 50 who have higher levels of testosterone have a higher risk of prostate cancer, U.S. researchers reported Sunday. The findings may mean that men should be cautious about a new kind of treatment called testosterone replacement therapy, being tested in older men who see a decline in general health and vigor. A study of more than 750 men showed those with the highest levels of free testosterone in the blood were the most likely to have prostate cancer. "Since testosterone replacement therapy increases the amount of free testosterone in the blood, older men considering or receiving testosterone replacement should be counseled as to the association until data from long-term clinical trials becomes available," said Dr. Kellogg Parsons, a urologist at Johns Hopkins University who led the study, said in a statement. The association between free testosterone and prostate cancer risk in older men was not affected by height, weight, percent of body fat or muscle mass, Parsons told a meeting of the American Urological Association in San Francisco.

The reason for this is by the time it is detected, the cancer has often spread elsewhere in the body. Nuclear-Medicine experts say they've found a new method that detects prostate cancer faster and more accureatly than current methods including MRI and CAT scans. Known as prostascint, the new imaging technique relies on a radioactive isotope that is released into the body. This isotope attaches to cancer cells and can be scanned, providing a map that gives the size and location of the prostate cancer cells. An FDA committee recently recommended that the new technique be reviewed for approval.

The Prostate Cancer Genetic Research Study ( PROGRESS )is a nationwide research project exploring why some families have several male relatives with prostate cancer. Discovering the inherited genes for prostate cancer in families and how they work will hopefully provide new clues to help diagnose, treat, cure, and even prevent prostate cancer in future generations. The Prostate Cancer Genetic Research Study is being conducted by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. This research is made possible by funding from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health , with additional support from CaP CURE and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Prepared By:
