UK government increases funds for prostate cancer
LONDON (Reuters) The British government announced a four-fold increase on Wednesday in funding for prostate cancer research to help diagnose and treat a disease that kills 9,500 men a year. Health Secretary Alan Milburn said men with suspected prostate cancer will be able to see a specialist within two weeks of being referred by their general practitioner, an extra 95 urologists will be brought into the NHS by 2005, and better information will be made available to both doctors and patients.

Orchiectomy for the Treatment of Advanced Prostate Cancer
Last Revised November 25, 1995
Introduction What are the advantages of orchiectomy? What are the disadvantages of orchiectomy? ... Some things to think about
Introduction
Certainly until the late 1980s or even the early 1990s there was no doubt whatsoever that orchiectomy was the gold standard for the hormonal treatment of advanced prostate cancer. By carrying out the surgical removal of a man's testes, the physician was able to completely shut down the synthesis of testosterone, thus removing testosterone stimulation of the prostate cancer growth and progression of the disease. Even today the medical community still considers the development of every new form of treatment for advanced prostate cancer in terms of its effectiveness and safety compared to orchiectomy.
What are the advantages of orchiectomy?

Pc Spes and Prostate Cancer
I'm Jean Curie, a 56 year old man with advanced prostate cancer. I was diagnosed in august '98 with advanced prostate cancer with metastases to all the bones except the head. After the conventional hormonal treatment I became hormon refractory and stopped responding in april '99. My PSA rose from 18.7 to 112 in a few month's. Then I discovered PC SPES, it literally saved my life. My current PSA (02/09/00) is 0.5 and the only treatment is 3x3 capsules of PC SPES and 15 grams Modified Citrus Pectin each day. I know people who are using pc-spes for years, unfortunately there are also people who stopped responding to pc-spes after a certain period of time. Pc-spes has lengthened my survival time now with almost 1 year. UPDATE 15/10/02 : pc-spes and spes are not available anymore because Botaniclab has closed. I am using now Prostasol with imupros, my current PSA is 6.1 UPDATE 12/03/03 : pc-spes and spes available again (look at link where to buy). My current psa is 8.4 .

The researchers conclude that lycopene supplementation lowers PSA levels; they observed an average 18 per cent decrease in the lycopene group as compared to a 14 per cent increase in the control group. The level of the tumor suppressing protein Cx43 in the malignant part of the tumor was found to be substantially higher in the lycopene group. It was also apparent that tumors tended to be smaller and more sharply defined (less encroachment into surrounding healthy tissue) in the lycopene group. No adverse effects of the lycopene supplementation were reported by the patients or their physicians. The researchers conclude that lycopene is likely to be beneficial for both prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, but urge larger trials to confirm this.
Sun exposure prevents prostate cancer
STAFFORDSHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM. British researchers have confirmed that exposure to sunlight helps prevent prostate cancer. Their study involved 210 men diagnosed with prostate cancer and 155 men with an enlarged prostate, but no prostate cancer (controls). The men were interviewed in order to estimate their lifetime sun exposure. Men with the lowest exposure were found to have a three times greater incidence of prostate cancer than did men with a high lifetime exposure. Sunburns in childhood were found to be particularly protective with men having had one or more childhood sunburns being six times less likely to develop prostate cancer than men who had not experienced childhood sunburns.
