Course Syllabus
This hands-on course teaches the Prolog programming language from the perspective of computational linguistics. Students learn the key concepts and techniques of logic programming, including Prolog database queries, Prolog term unification, backtracking and recursion. These techniques are then applied to natural language processing, including linguistic feature unification and elementary parsing with Definite Clause Grammars (DCGs). The software used is SICStus Prolog. The course textbooks are: Programming in Prolog , Springer Verlag, 1981-1994 and
Prolog and Natural Language Analysis , CSLI Publications, Stanford, 1987.
The course is taught in English. The course consists of lectures and practical lab sessions.
Prerequisites
  • Knowledge of Unix (equivalent to Ctl130) Knowledge of Emacs (equivalent to Chapters 1-5 of
Learning GNU Emacs , O'Reilly, 1996) Introductory knowledge of programming (equivalent to Ctl220)
The course is suitable for language students who do not have a computer science background.

Clause and Effect: Prolog Programming for the Working Programmer > Customer Review #1: Serves its purpose well

For those who have experience in logic programming, either with Prolog or some other language, such as Lisp, or even a high-level symbolic programming language like Mathematica or Maple, this book could serve as a first course or a summary of Prolog programming. Research in logic programming is still an active area, and the approach taken in logic programming languages seems more natural from the standpoint of mathematical (predicate) logic. The author, in this short book, gives the reader an appreciation of Prolog and the philosophy and constructions behind logic programming. Many examples are employed that illustrate how to code in Prolog and how useful it can be in real-world applications. Data structures in Prolog are discussed in chapter 2 as generalizations of programs using compound terms instead of just constants and variables. Lists are defined and their syntax discussed, along with dot and bracket notation. The implementation of simple arithmetic in Prolog is discussed. Several effective examples are given to illustrate arithmetic and list manipulation in Prolog.

Prolog Programming for Artificial Intelligence > Customer Review #1: Great book for learning AI with Prolog, but....

... a horrible Prolog tutorial. This is not a good first book on Prolog. If you are new to Prolog and Logic Programming, you should read Art of Prolog first. Prolog is quite different from other languages, and youll need some time to get it. This book doesnt give you that time: after briefly introducing the basic concepts, Bratko dives at breakneck speed into recursion and list processing. Dont get me wrong, this is a magnificent book on how to do AI with Prolog, but it shouldnt be your first Prolog book. Its an excellent second book.

    40. Prolog Tutorial -- Introduction
The sample programs have been especially chosen to help promote the use of prolog programming in an artificial intelligence course.
    http://www.csupomona.edu/~jrfisher/www/prolog_tutorial/intro.html
    Introduction
Please notify the author before including a link to any of the pages in this tutorial. Permission to copy is denied. Permission to link is freely granted. Prolog is the major example of a fourth generation programming language supporting the declarative programming paradigm. The Japanese Fifth-Generation Computer Project, announced in 1981, adopted Prolog as a development language, and thereby focused considerable attention on the language and its capabilities. The programs in this tutorial are written in "standard" (University of) Edinburgh Prolog, as specified in the classic Prolog textbook by authors Clocksin and Mellish (1981,1992). The other major kind of Prolog is the PrologII family of Prologs which are the descendants of Marseille Prolog. The reference to Giannesini, et.al. (1986) uses a version of PrologII. There are differences between these two varieties of Prolog; part of the difference is syntax, and part is semantics. However, students who learn either kind of Prolog can easily adapt to the other kind. This tutorial is intended to be used to help learn the essential, basic concepts of Prolog. The sample programs have been especially chosen to help promote the use of Prolog programming in an artificial intelligence course. Lisp and Prolog are the most frequently used symbolic programming languages for artificial intelligence. They are widely regarded as excellent languages for "exploratory" and "prototype programming".
