Getting to know your pupils and suggesting camp and after-school programs can be very beneficial for you as a teacher. These programs will allow you to help your students to achieve ever-higher standards and, at the same time, allow your students to learn about themselves and become motivated learners. These after-school program and camp experiences will help your students to succeed in your classroom and the rest of their lives.
When recommending any supplemental programs for a student, you must leave the control with the parents. Both you and they know it is your job to teach their child. In order to help the parents to understand that you accept and welcome that responsibility, make it clear first that you are concerned for their child and his/her long-range success just as they are. Then it is their choice whether or not to avail themselves of your recommendation.

http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/2000/430022.shtml
Summer camps teach life skills to Ukraine's children by Bohdan Lysyj WARREN, Mich. - For the past five years, Help Us Help the Children, a non-profit foundation with branches in Canada, Ukraine and the United States, has been organizing summer camps for children from Ukraine's "internaty" - state-run children's homes. This year on August 4-20, 350 children between the ages of 12 and 17 from 35 internaty throughout Ukraine attended a summer camp in the beautiful Carpathian Mountains, in the town of Vorokhta, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. The camp's location is striking distance from Ukraine's highest peak, Hoverlia, at 2,060 meters, and near such scenic towns as Yaremche and Kosiv. The campers were housed in facilities normally used to house athletes during training: Baza Avanthard, home to Ukraine's national ski jump team, and Baza Ukraina, home to Ukraine's national biathlon team. Children from internaty are often orphans, or come from highly dysfunctional families - alcohol or drug-addicted parents, parents in jail, abusive family members, extreme poverty. Children from these families are often sent to live in a state-run children's home for years at a time. Many live there until the completion of high school, after which they are discharged, often, literally, onto the street, with very little in the way of support and life skills. The summer camp programs organized by Help Us Help the Children include workshops intended to improve personal life skills: the ability to make decisions, solve problems, negotiate, communicate, cooperate with others. Discussions and activities focus on ethics, responsibility, tolerance, respect for others, as well as Ukrainian tradition and culture. Campers are also given practical information about topics such as hygiene and nutrition, and job search tools. The camp activities are geared towards building independence, self-sufficiency, self-esteem and confidence in these adolescents.

The shops are grouped together in a small village, much akin to the art communities found typically in larger cities. In our Print Shop we do a wide variety of two dimensional art including black and white photography in the darkroom, print block making, painting, drawing and silk screening. Next door is our Clay Shop with a potters wheel, kiln and many tools for producing fine pottery. In the Metal Shop we feature a copper enameling kiln and materials for all manner of metal projects. We also have a Bead and String Shop for producing the always popular bead jewelry and next door a Wood Shop equipped for a variety of woodworking tasks. Continuing down the line we have a Basketmaking Shop and a Gallery to display the summer masterpieces. Talented artists supervise our Crafts Area, and their direction and the right facilities combine to create an artistic outlet of the highest caliber for Woodcraft campers. Typically our art instructors have chosen art education as a career and their commitment to the arts is consistently apparent in both the attitude and the product of the campers.

TO THE AVERAGE KID, SUMMERTIME MEANS NO SCHOOL, VACATION GETAWAYS, AND CAMP. BUT there are groups of young people who are actually getting schooled during the summer, and they are having a ball. Welcome to "investment camp," where young people learn to recognize stock market trends, invest in steady growth companies, evaluate mutual funds, minimize and recognize risks, and build a balanced and diversified portfolio. Acquania Gibbs of Clarkston, Georgia, says her curiosity was piqued when she received an e-mail newsletter from Dollar Divas (www.dollardiva.com), a Website for young women, highlighting a financial camp for girls ages 13 to 21 called Summer Stock. Because the camp is somewhat pricey at $850, Gibbs applied for a scholarship based on financial need. "I had to write an essay telling about myself and prior experience or lack thereof," says Gibbs, who was awarded $650 (leaving her $200 to pay out of pocket). Some 26 other girls joined Gibbs this past summer at the camp, held on the campus of Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. "I really liked the format of the program. We attended workshops as a group, we ate meals and lived together in a dorm-like fashion, and we did interactive games to make the learning fun," says the 19-year-old sophomore at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Camping Magazine
Sept-Oct, 2003 by Alfie Kohn
This explains the growing interest among camp professionals in the movement known as character education. In its broad sense, that label refers to almost anything we might do to help kids become good people. To appreciate the value of this mission, we don't need to rattle off statistics about drugs, violence, and teenage pregnancy. Just watch how many children learn at a tender age not to be tenderor who assume that being successful means looking out for Number One. Needless to say, parents have the primary responsibility in the area of values. But, historically, parents haven't been asked, nor should they be asked, to do it alone. Schools and camps, among other institutions, have a role to play. Put it this way: If parents are raising kids to be compassionate, responsible, ethical people that makes our jobs a lot easier. If parents are not raising their kids along those lines, that makes our jobs a lot more important.
