GSLgen
Version 2.0
Welcome To GSLgen
GSLgen is a general-purpose file generator. It generates source code, data, or other files from an XML file and a schema file. The XML file defines a particular set of data. The schema file tells GSLgen what to do with that data. GSLgen is based on two powerful concepts. First, we use XML to describe data objects. XML is a modern, clean, and self-describing data description language. Second, we use a general-purpose schema language (GSL) that can be used to do all kinds of manipulation of the XML data and the resulting output. XML + GSL is a strong, yet simple, solution to a problem that is so common that most people don't even realise it exists: producing source code and other text output mechanically, from a set of standard templates (schemas) and object definitions. The concept of schema-based code generation is extremely powerful and valuable to those who are capable of abstracting a problem. These are some of the things you can do with GSLgen:
  • Generate interfaces between programs. Typically, you define the interface objects as XML, then generate code to pack and unpack these objects. You can use GSLgen to create an ad-hoc generator which will produce code in any language. This is excellent for passing data between components written in different languages, and running on different systems.

66. Programming Language Categories
Brief text compares 6 basic language types general scripting, programmer scripting, application development, lowlevel, pure functional, complete core.
http://www.cs.oberlin.edu/~jwalker/languageCategories.html
Programming Language Categories
There are literally thousands of programming languages in the world and each has its own strengths and weakness. Many are simply for teaching or language research. These languages do not interest or concern me. They are frequently limited and almost useless. There is a certain set of programming fields/categories that I believe are currently distinct enough to have an independent programming language to represent them. Each is however, narrow enough that there is no need for more than one language. Language Role Best Candidate Scripting Programmer's scripting Better Scheme (+OO) Application Development Low-level C/C++ Pure Functional Complete Core
Scripting
The most basic need of for scripting languages is one which is simple to use because it will be used by those with a minimum of programming knowledge or in situations where cranking out code which does the job is all the matters. An example of where this language might be used by people with more of a programming background is in web scripting. Examples of languages that might fall into this category are PHP, JavaScript, Perl, and Python. VB could also be considered in this family but it is too frequently used for application development today. There is currently no outstanding candidate language for this category. When one is chosen I believe it should bare resemblance to the Application development language but with more bells and whistles to let one crank things out and make it easier.

Overview
This document is meant as a guide for someone writing a set-uid or CGI program. It covers many common mistakes and vulnerablies but is not meant as a replacement for careful checking of your code. These guidelines come from our own experiences doing security and from many sources on the net. Start by reading the guidelines for the type of program you are writing (CGI or set-uid) and then continue by reading the checklist for the language you are writing in (e.g. C, PERL). After checking your code yourself, then please send email to security@ncsa.uiuc.edu . We can double check you code for you and additionally we like to know about new CGI and set-uid programs as they represent possible entry points into NCSA's computational environment. Thank you - NCSA Security
Guidelines for set-uid programs

About the Contest
Since 1991, the Computer Science Division has sponsored an informal programming contest each fall, the top placers of which form that year's Berkeley teams in the annual ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (``ACM'' stands for the Association for Computing Machinery). Contests like this are becoming common. Here's an article on the subject. As in the ACM contests, our contestants have five hours in which to write working solutions (in C, C++, or Java) to about eight programming problems. We score by the number of correct solutions, breaking ties on the basis of the total time required to complete the correct submissions and the number of incorrect submissions. If you are interested in participating, watch for announcements on this page and elsewhere. In the meantime, we've provided some suggestions on how to prepare yourself for our local contest and the ACM contests.

Instant Hacking
[If you like this tutorial, please check out my book Practical Python This is a short introduction to the art of programming, with examples written in the programming language Python . (If you already know how to program, but want a short intro to Python, you may want to check out my article Instant Python .) This article has been translated into Italian Polish Japanese Serbian , and Brazilian Portuguese and is in the process of being translated into Korean. This page is not about breaking into other people's computer systems etc. I'm not into that sort of thing, so please don't email me about it. For more information about what hacking is really about, take a look at hackerethic.org Note : To get the examples working properly, write the programs in a text file and then run that with the interpreter; do not try to run them directly in the interactive interpreter - not all of them will work. (Please don't ask me on details on this. Check the documentation or send an email to help@python.org

Programming Dynamic HTML in Java
The promise of DHTML is a simple yet powerful page description language. One with better control over style and placement than HTML, and with real programmability. WFC encapsulatesthe DHTML document object model into a handful of easy to use Java classes.
Background
DHTML is primarily about STYLES (the look, positioning, and layering of content),DIVisions (fine granularity of what's what), and CONTROL. Control is where WFC breaks new ground. In the past DHTML pretty much meant some sort of scripting language (Javascript, VBscript). Well, it was possible to use C++ via COM, but few did. With WFC you can deliver self-contained DHTML applications written completely in Java. Even better, these applications can be separated from their content and graphic design. Writers and Designers control their respective pieces while the developer codes application logic. The application logic remains in Java and isavailable to the enterprise.

Scheme
Scheme is a statically scoped and properly tail-recursive dialect of the Lisp programming language invented by Guy Lewis Steele Jr. and Gerald Jay Sussman . It was designed to have an exceptionally clear and simple semantics and few different ways to form expressions. A wide variety of programming paradigms, including imperative, functional, and message passing styles, find convenient expression in Scheme.
