September 24, 1999 - Important Announcement We regret to announce that Profiling-L, the criminal profiling discussion list sponsored by Knowledge Solutions, is now closed to the public, after nearly a year and a half of operation. We will be donating our time, services, and resources that we were spending on Profiling-L, to where we feel there will be a better use for them, including the continued discussion of evidence based criminal profiling in a professional setting through the Academy of Behavioral Profiling We are very disappointed that we will no longer be able to offer the list to the public, as we really wanted to have a criminal profiling discussion list that everyone could participate in and benefit from. For a time that happened. But due to the amount of off-topic posts and the unprofessional conduct of some listmembers, it had reached the point that those with professional interests and questions were no longer posting. Knowledge Solutions founded and maintained the publicly available Profiling-L Discussion List in the hopes of providing a good forum for the debate of issues related to criminal profiling. There was no other forum at the time in which criminal profiling could be openly discussed. We felt that the list served that need at first. As issues arose, we did our best to keep it on track and on task. However, for quite some time now, we have felt that it has been for the most part not on track and not on task, and that many list members were blatantly ignoring the list guidelines (see below) in spite of our best efforts. Many list members felt this way as well and wrote us expressing their concerns.

Since that time, the investigative term "profile" has slowly become synonymous with the psychological term "syndrome" in the eyes of the legal community. The process of criminal profiling in its original form, as taught by Howard Teten and Pat Mullany at the FBI beginning in 1969, was completely different in origins and methodology from the construct of the

Components of Racial Profiling Legislation
DATE: March 5, 2001 TO: Senator Linda Berglin, Senator Jane Ranum, Representative Greg Gray FROM: RE: Components of Racial Profiling Legislation Summary Key components of effective racial profiling legislation: 1. Mandatory collection 2. Necessary data categories 3. Ongoing data collection 4. Officer identification and other accountability measures 5. Establishment of an advisory committee of legislators, police representatives and community representatives Context Racial profiling is one of the most pressing civil rights issues of our time. It extends beyond direct victims to negatively affect all persons of color of all generations and income levels. It undermines the legitimacy of the criminal justice system, and hinders effective policing in the communities that need it the most. A Resource Guide on Racial Profiling Data Collection Systems, published by the U.S. Department of Justice, defines racial profiling as: any police-initiated action that relies on the race, ethnicity or national origin rather than the behavior of an individual or information that leads the police to a particular individual who has been identified as being, or having been, engaged in criminal activity. In the context of traffic stops by police officers, racial profiling should be defined broadly as encompassing officers’

106. Security Profiling
Security profiling,
http://securityprofiling.com/
The latest network intrusions are combining qualities of viruses, worms, and denial of service attacks into new blended threats that may exploit multiple platforms via multiple attack vectors. Such intrusions impose serious risk to network integrity, and adversely affect business operations.
Carnegie Mellon University estimates that 99% of all reported intrusions…result through exploitation of known vulnerabilities or configuration errors, [for which] countermeasures were available. And, research has shown that about 30% of attacks exploit vulnerabilities that could be prevented with patches, and another 65% through misconfigured systems.
SecurityProfiling offers an integrated suite of policy driven Anti-Vulnerability™ technology security solutions to meet these requirements. They quickly and accurately identify network vulnerabilities and configuration errors on an ongoing basis; then proactively and remotely mitigate them with patches or configuration setting changes – thereby continuously enforcing policy compliance; and document the processes with change tracking and audit trail Crystal Reports.
For example, Anti-Vulnerability technology solutions will accurately identify, and in real-time mitigate both recent RPC DCOM and Windows Messenger Service vulnerabilities by remotely deploying the appropriate patch and/or disabling the service on all affected machines across the network in one-click. Additionally, MPR options will expand to edit router ACLs and block specific ports on perimeter and desktop firewalls for coordinated, holistic network re-configuration to mitigate such threats.

I finally decided not to develop any EJP plugin for Eclipse. Even if I would have been glad to see EJP integrated into one of my favorite development environments, I recently tried the Hyades project and was really impressed by the work done so far. For sure this is the profiling, logging and testing platform of the near Java future.
Some good news though: the new lazy implementation of the parser is working like a charm - I did profile the startup of Eclipse (~200 MB of data for main thread) and was able to load the file in EJP in less than 5 seconds! Expect a release soon...

By Wayne Petherick
Introduction
There is a great deal of hype and myth surrounding both the phenomenon of serial murder and the process of criminal profiling. Much of the serial murder fiction is a result of the portrayal of these killers in the popular media, and the way in which they are represented by the news media. Their crimes occupy a high profile category, and occur at the end of the spectrum of normality (an arbitrary distinction between us and people not like us). Therefore, they usually attract a great deal of attention. Because the average person is unable to fathom the acts of serial killers, explanations for their behaviour fall somewhere between the evil of the perpetrator and some form of mental instability. Neither of these explanations is necessarily helpful in understanding their behaviour, and neither is necessarily correct.

Blackett Family DNA Activity 2
Overview
DNA Analyst Bob Blackett has graciously provided The Biology Project with sample data from his own work. In this activity, you will learn the concepts and techniques behind DNA profiling of the 13 core CODIS "Short Tandem Repeat" loci used for the national DNA databank. You will then have the opportunity to collect and interpret actual STR data, and to answer one or more of the following questions:
  • How is STR data used in a DNA Paternity Test?
  • How can STR data from close relatives be used to create a genetic profile of a missing person?
  • How much genetic diversity exists among siblings?
  • How does one calculate the probability for a specific DNA profile? Alternatively, you may wish to create your own activities, based on some suggestions for open-ended inquiry that are offered below. This activity is aimed at students with a basic knowledge of DNA structure, Mendelian genetics, and human pedigree analysis. A good preparation for this activity would be to review our problem sets and tutorials in Human Biology

    Blackett Family DNA Activity
    Introduction
Welcome to the Blackett Family DNA Activity. Bob Blackett is a DNA analyst. As part of his training, he made a DNA profile of his own family using a technique called RFLP analysis. Family studies are a good way to learn about DNA profiling and RFLP analysis because you can follow the inheritance of DNA markers (alleles) from one generation to the next. In this activity, you will:
  • learn the concepts and techniques behind DNA profiling interpret DNA autoradiograms evaluate DNA profiles to determine familial relationships
  • There is also a sequel to this activity, Blackett Family DNA Activity 2 , where you can learn about the most current method of DNA profiling based on analysis of short tandem repeat polymorphisms.

    Monitor Calibration and Profiling
If you can not trust the colors displayed on your monitor, all other color management is a waste of time. Calibrating and profiling your monitor should, therefore, be your first priority. Luckily, it is the easiest part of the image capture, editing, and printing system to profile. The cost to do this ranges from free to expensive. If color accuracy and the ability to match your prints to your monitor are important to you, a decent hardware calibration system is essential. With a little work you can get good color from your monitor. If digital photography is your business, or you simply want the best colors you can get, the expense of a high quality calibration system is more than justified. The most basic calibration tool, other than ignoring calibration altogether, is Adobe Gamma bottom of this page. A better approach is to use a hardware calibration tool. Below are descriptions of four hardware systems I evaluated. The software used is also critical. The better sensors are supported by most of the software packages, so do not feel you have to purchase a complete system from only one source. Next, select the gamma to use. The traditional value for older black and white Macintosh monitors was a gamma of 1.8. This also worked for video systems capable of only showing 16 colors. Almost all modern CRT monitors, however, have a native gamma of 2.2, which is determined by the design of the electron guns. The farther you drag the video system from this optimal level, the more the available color gamut is compressed. Therefore, a gamma of 2.2 allows for the maximum range of colors your system can display.

Based in Cambridgeshire since 1981, Formet has established a reputation for quality of product and of service.
Our emphasis is on precision metalwork, and to this end we have always invested in the latest technology available to help us serve industries in the medical, laboratory, repro-graphic, electronic and communications sectors. How many times in the past have you been promised quality and delivery dates only to be disappointed again. We have built our name and company mostly by word of mouth from satisfied customers.
We do not make promises we can't keep. Our reinvestment programme has kept us at the cutting edge of technology and this is reflected in quality, delivery dates and prices. We are often invited to contribute ideas and proposals at the design stage on new projects, advice on materials to be used, specifications on finish and methods of assembly. This is a service we are always keen to offer, it can have tremendous benefits for both parties, particularly on prices. Cost-reduction is always a major consideration, we offer advice from prototype stage through pre-production and into production. Even on established contracts a reverse engineering policy is adopted to monitor prices which can often be reduced by extra tooling, or by using newer technology not available at the conception of the product.

"After walking the streets of Cincinnati and meeting with local civil rights officials ... it is clear that the local police department has targeted African-American citizens because of their race," said Kweisi Mfume, president and CEO of the NAACP. The American Civil Liberties Union and an organization called the Cincinnati Black United Front filed the racial profiling case last month in federal court. The lawsuit seeks a court order requiring the police department to alter its practice of targeting minority citizens based on their race and seeks money damages for certain plaintiffs.
