PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD GUIDANCE Please observe the following guidelines:
  • Do not confuse Career Guidance (activities for/with students) with Professional Development (activities offered for section members to assist them in personal improvement or in enhancement of their careers). The age of the students makes no difference. Reentry students are still students because they are not yet practicing engineers. Career Guidance activities will not be included in evaluating the Professional Development Award. Emphasis should be placed on section sponsored activities (or in the case of MAL's, activities showing a level of personal initiative versus training or development that is part of the job). Individual, non-SWE sponsored activities should be included only if they can be shown to benefit the section of SWE as well. Entries should focus on the following topics and include a brief description of their use as a professional development tool. Tips are provided below on how to build programs in each category.
Technical topics: Plant tours and technical sessions fall into this category. A meeting on "Do-It-Yourself Automobile Repair" is technical. One titled "Don't Get Taken to the Cleaners at the Garage" would be considered personal development and fall into the next category. Show how the topic relates to Professional Development.
