Professional Development Policy
The Shipley School recognizes all teachers as lifelong learners. The School seeks to foster the attitudes and habits inherent in teachers who are self-motivated and exhibit a purposeful and genuine involvement in their learning. True adult learners can identify direct and germane applications for the skills and knowledge they have already acquired or want to improve. To that end the School encourages teachers to continue their studies and enrich their learning. In the framework of self- and formal School evaluations, each teacher is asked to state clearly how and when he or she plans to improve teaching skills, acquire new knowledge and stay abreast of new developments in his/her field of expertise. Professional goals for self-renewal can be met through participation in a range of growth initiatives supported by the School. Some teachers work on a program of studies for an advanced degree or special certification. Others are interested in acquiring current knowledge in the field and practical classroom skills. Some teachers attend conferences that bring together other professionals in similar fields and participate in workshop sessions that explore issues relevant to both classroom subject and teaching. Some prefer collaborative projects in which colleagues with common interests look for ways to integrate curriculum, develop educational programs, or create interdisciplinary projects. Others can improve their teaching by observing colleagues engaged in similar work inside and outside the School. All teachers should look carefully for opportunities that help them step out of their day-to-day routines and enable them to examine the craft they practice.

Professional Development Committee
The Professional Development Committee exists to promote professional growth of all faculty in the three divisions during the academic year as well as during the summer months. The committee, under the leadership of Denis Asselin, is made up of six members, two from each division, who serve for a term of three years. Only two members are replaced at the end of any given year, to assure greater continuity in the committee's work. Those interested in serving on the committee are voted in by members of their division. The committee meets on a monthly basis throughout the school year.
The committee keeps faculty abreast of professional development opportunities through announcements and the newsletter, encourages class visits, and promotes the sharing of professional development experiences among colleagues. The committee devotes a significant amount of time in the Spring to overseeing the distribution of summer funds available.

Certificate Program in Business Administration and Professional English
This two-semester program is designed for international students interested in learning the basics of American business practices and developing the English communication skills required to succeed in professional business settings. The program meets the academic requirements for study on an F-1 Visa.
If you work, or plan to work, in areas that demand a high level of English proficiency, you can benefit from these courses. The business courses include Principles of Marketing, Business Accounting, Principles of Management, Business Financial Management, and Business Policy. Instead of taking Communication in Organizations, international students may (or in the case of F-1 Visa holders, are required to) enroll in an intensive program of professional English courses.
Professional English courses build your speaking, writing, and listening abilities. You will learn to listen effectively at meetings and conferences, speak accurately and appropriately in formal and informal work settings, and read and write professional documents. You will acquire important language skills such as negotiating effectively in English, making oral presentations to working groups, and gathering information about your specialized fields through interviews and non-library based research.
The first (Fall admission only) semester of this two-semester program includes two Business Administration courses and three intensive Professional English courses. The Spring semester offers students three, more advanced Business Administration courses, and further, specialized Professional English course work
