Professional Development Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has partnered with the California State University Chancellor's Office to offer a variety of training and educational opportunities to our staff. The Systemwide Professional Development Program focuses on topics that build supervisory and management skills and address common challenges in the higher education workplace. Training opportunities include one-day seminars at a variety of locations around the state, focused training offered at our campus, and web-based subscription training. The Cal Poly Human Resources office, acting as liaison with the Chancellor's Office, will provide information to the campus regarding available training opportunities, answer general questions, and coordinate the "e-learning" on-line program. In addition, most employees of Cal Poly are eligible to participate in the Fee Waiver Program, which gives eligible faculty and staff employees the opportunity to attend classes at CSU campuses at greatly reduced rates. Eligible employees who do not wish to take advantage of the Fee Waiver benefit may transfer the benefit to a spouse, domestic partner, or dependent child, in accordance with the appropriate bargaining unit contract.

Your Career Choices
The Career Process
At no point in the career process can an individual assume that the job search process is complete. Even employed individuals need to know that when companies are bought and sold, some people will be left looking for new positions. Company benefits are constantly changing, and what was once standard, such as paying for schooling, can be eliminated in the name of cost savings. It is up to the individual to keep informed, to read as many current publications as possible, and to constantly update skills and redefine goals.
Career Planning
Planning a career is a lifelong event, not something done once at age 18. Encourage students to continue finding and using sources of career information and to periodically reevaluate career choices. A conscious reexamination of educational choices is also necessary as workplace competencies change. Being flexible is the key to a long, satisfying career.
Career Development
Making a career choice is a lengthy process and does not always work out as planned. Explain that career development is not always an exact science and that it never actually ends. What meets a person's needs at one stage of life may not work at another. Having a family can have a great impact on career plans, as can health, the economy, world events, and new interests. Encourage students to think of career decisions as an ongoing process that will continue their entire adult life. Back to Top
Global Influences
World Economies
The study of international economies can be useful to students in helping them identify information about the U.S. job market. Privatization of corporate assets in a distant country can have repercussions in the United States. For example, years ago General Motors had its property privatized by Argentina's government. That did not stop the company from reinvesting in the country, encouraged by its more stable economy. Whether that decision proves to be wise or not, the rest of GM will be affected by it. Regularly reading a major newspaper like the Wall Street Journal can help student's stay informed on such matters.

Critical Issue: Evaluating Professional Growth and Development
ISSUE: The ultimate worth of professional development for teachers is the essential role it plays in the improvement of student learning. That means that educators must pay attention to the results of professional development on job performance, organizational effectiveness, and the success of all students. Each professional development effort should be accompanied by a well-designed evaluation plan for determining its effectiveness. Because of the complexity of current changes in education, this plan should focus extensively on the use of ethnographic research . It also should extend over time in order to describe and give value to the interrelationship of individual change and systemic change in education. OVERVIEW: As schools continue to move into different phases of educational reform, one factor that is consistent in each state, district, and school plan is the need for professional development. Every school-improvement effort hinges on the smallest unit; in education, that is the classroom (McLaughlin, 1991). Educational reform requires teachers not only to update their skills and knowledge but also to totally transform their roles as educators. It establishes new expectations for students, teachers, and school communities that some educators may not be prepared to meet. Professional development helps teachers learn new roles and teaching strategies that will improve student achievement. (See the Critical Issue "

12. Business Administration Professional Development: Meeting Individual Needs
Students with learning disabilities may require additional assistance completingsome of the activities in Chapter 21, Developing a Business Plan.
http://www.glencoe.com/sec/busadmin/prodev/min.shtml
Students with Behavior Disorders Students with behavior disorders need a structured learning environment. To provide this environment, you may find it helpful to seek input from the students themselves. Ask about their strengths, their weaknesses, and the techniques that enhance the learning process for them. You will also have to balance the individual needs of these students with the group's requirements. Reinforce appropriate behavior and model it for students. Students with behavior disorders can at times struggle to maintain the level of attention needed to deal with challenging material. To assist these students and encourage them to persist, you may wish to speak to them on an individual basis about their strengths and weaknesses. It might also be helpful at this time to outline chapter objectives with an eye toward helping them feel successful. This may require a flexible assessment program and enrichment material that capitalizes on their interests. Students with behavior disorders of any type require a class environment that provides both support and structure so that they know what to expect and what will be expected of them. Experiment to determine the best learning modality for each student and structure activities accordingly. For example, a visual learner would benefit from having material presented in the form of photographs or computer graphics. Students who act out in class may need assignments to match their learning styles. Approaches like these will help students comprehend the material and enable them to participate better in class discussions.
