1 Introduction
This document contains the hardware compatibility notes for FreeBSD 5.1-RELEASE on the i386 hardware platform (also referred to as FreeBSD/i386 5.1-RELEASE). It lists devices known to work on this platform, as well as some notes on boot-time kernel customization that may be useful when attempting to configure support for new devices. Note: This document includes information specific to the i386 hardware platform. Versions of the hardware compatibility notes for other architectures will differ in some details.
2 Supported Processors and Motherboards
FreeBSD/i386 runs on a wide variety of ``IBM PC compatible'' machines. Due to the wide range of hardware available for this architecture, it is impossible to exhaustively list all combinations of equipment supported by FreeBSD. Nevertheless, some general guidelines are presented here. There is a wide variety of motherboards available for this architecture. Motherboards using the ISA, VLB, EISA, AGP, and PCI expansion busses are well-supported. There is some limited support for the MCA (``MicroChannel'') expansion bus used in the IBM PS/2 line of PCs.

AMD Rolls Out Processors For Mobile Markets March 13, 2003
The new chips are aimed at laptop makers pushing out low-voltage, high-performance models
By Gregg Keizer, Techweb News
Intel isn't the only chip manufacturer making waves. Intel competitor Advanced Micro Devices Inc. on Wednesday unveiled 12 new processors for the mobile market, targeting laptop makers pushing out new models in the thin-and-light and high-performance areas. The new processors, announced at CeBIT 2003 in Hannover, Germany, all are based on AMD's Athlon XP 32-bit microprocessor and carry the new "M" moniker to denote "mobile." They include five chips the company says are suitable for low-voltage laptops, typically the most mobile portables that have trimmed ounces and inches and so have less room for bulkier batteries. Another seven target full-sized notebooks where performance is more important than portability. Unlike Intel's Centrino technology, which locks laptop makers into a Wi-Fi (802.11b) wireless connection, AMD is touting the more open environment its chipsets offer. Laptop makers are able to equip their systems with whatever wireless solution they want, and easily integrate it with the AMD processors' architecture.

UNIX servers
Introduction
IBM has a long history of leveraging technology to build high performance, reliable systems. Over the last several years, we have been increasingly applying this expertise to UNIX servers. The IBM pSeries 680 continued this heritage with industry leading performance across a broad spectrum of industry standard benchmarks. The same microprocessor is used in the IBM iSeries 840. That system is also at the head of the list in a number of industry standard benchmarks. The IBM RS/6000 SP system incorporating the POWER3-II microprocessor is currently used in the world's largest supercomputer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Several years ago, we set out to design a new microprocessor that would insure we would leverage IBM strengths across many different disciplines to deliver a server that would redefine what was meant by the term server. POWER4 is the result. It was developed by over 300 engineers in several IBM development laboratories. With POWER4, the convergence of iSeries and pSeries microprocessors will reach a new level. POWER4 was designed from the outset to satisfy the needs of both of these systems. Additionally, projected technology improvements drove significant enhancements to system structure. The resulting design leverages technology advances in circuit densities and module packaging to achieve high levels of performance suitable for server types of applications. We have publicly talked about POWER4 for over 2 years prior to its formal announcement. We were confident we would achieve its objectives in terms of performance, schedule, and content. And we have.

Thursday, June 10, 2004 Arrests made in HL2 Thefts
Discuss
Arrests have been made in several countries related to the break-in to Valve’s network, theft of the Half-Life 2 source code, and release of the source code on the Internet. “Within a few days of the announcement of the break-in, the online gaming community had tracked down those involved,” said Gabe Newell, Valve’s CEO. “It was extraordinary to watch how quickly and how cleverly gamers were able to unravel what are traditionally unsolvable problems for law enforcement related to this kind of cyber-crime.”
Thousands of tips were received related to the criminal activities, with a core group of people who were able to analyze and backtrack from these clues. Subsequent to these individuals being identified, Valve has been working with various national authorities to prepare cases against those involved, leading to these arrests.
“It was very uplifting to see how the community rallied and tracked these people down. Everyone here at Valve is once again reminded of how much we owe to the gaming community,” added Mr. Newell. Wednesday, June 09, 2004

When you think of "new devices," the first thing that comes to mind might be something like a digital camera. While you might not attach a camera to your server, the same technologies that make cameras easy to install and use on a Windows 2000 Professional desktop computer also make it easier to deploy and manage hardware devices on the Windows® 2000 Server operating system. Windows 2000 Server supports a number of technologies and peripherals including: Multi-Processor Hardware. Windows 2000 Server supports the latest multi-processor hardware. This lets you gain proportionally more processing power from each of as many as 32 processors per machine. Adding processors to an existing system is an extremely economical way to increase processing power without the expense of adding another server. Plug and Play devices.

The CRS-1 Carrier Routing System carries a huge amount of traffic, scaling up to 92TBps, and it will provide Cisco's carrier grade platform for the next ten years. The product will have a shelf life of 20 years. The router starts shipping in June and will cost around £450,000 a pop. Cisco has not confirmed any orders yet, but says that six telcos are in the frame to buy. According to press reports, his audience, squeezed into the Computer Science museum in Mountain View, California, were "wowed" by a CRS-1 demo. Hmm, demos of the of servers and routers rank in the wow stakes a little lower than hanging out the laundry. Here is a graph, here is loadsadata - trust us on this - now watch it move on the big overhead.
