Intel: Dual-core processors across all market segments in 2005
Posted on Saturday, May 08 2004 @ 00:52:28 CEST by LSDsmurf
Here's some more information regarding the huge shift over at Intel. It's officially confirmed that the Tejas, Jayhawk and the Tulsa microprocessors are cancelled, these chips where originally planned for 2005.
Intel now promises to be able to deliver dual-core microprocessors across all market segments next year. Intel claims that it will have top-to-bottom families of dual-core microprocessors next year. The plans now include Itanium 2 chip “Montecito” for mission-critical enterprise servers as well as dual-core products for mobile computers, desktop computers and typical mainstream servers.
Dual-core processors can process two times more data per clock and handle more than one threads at once. This allows the whole system to perform a lot better under high load when running multiply processors.

Previously EFI was market leader in hardware PostScript RIP servers for Hewlett-Packard DesignJet Epson Canon , and Encad wide format printers but then people learned of its weak points. Actually over 200,000 people have been exposed to FLAAR's experiences with our two EFI Fiery RIPs. W hat are the options if you have one of the fabulous new 6-color large format printers by Roland or wide format printers by Colorspan ? If you need more options that provided by the restricted EFI Fiery RIP, consider software RIP or hardware PostScript RIP servers other than the EFI Fiery RIP, such as by Agfa , AHT, Colorbus , Colorspan, EIS, Fuji, Image Technologies Developments, Splash, Tangent, Torque, UFO, and YARC.

December 6, 2001 Status: Archived Duration: 60 min. Select a Viewing Option: Overview:
Motorola's PowerQUICC family of embedded communications processors have pulled many of the traditional hardware design challenges on chip. This web cast will explore the key technical benefits of new PowerQUICC II architectures and how Seamless hardware/software co-verification can be utilized to verify these highly, complex devices on a virtual prototype.
    Who Should Attend:
Hardware Designers, Software Developers, System Architects and Project Managers involved in the embedded systems design process and Motorola's PowerQUICC II architectures.
    Mentor Graphics:
The Mentor Graphics Seamless co-verification environment delivers high performance co-verification months before a hardware prototype can be built by combining the best in embedded software development tools with logic simulation. Seamless enables software and hardware development to be carried out in parallel removing the software from the critical path and reducing the risk of hardware prototype iterations resulting from integration errors. User-controlled optimizations boost performance by isolating the logic simulator from software-intensive operations such as block memory transfers and algorithmic routines.
    Motorola:
Motorola is the leading supplier of communications processors that enable customers to develop a wide range of products for next generation networks. Motorola's Smart Networks Platform comprises state-of-the-art microprocessor technology, sophisticated software, hundreds of alliances, and robust development tools that enable networking OEMs to build smarter networking systems faster than ever before.

So you're looking for a processor for your Internet Appliance server. Well, selecting processors for Internet Appliance servers ( see Surfing Up Data Sometimes hardware reference design platforms are available for the type of application you're working on. Those reference designs usually include a software development package for that application. Even if a reference design is available, you still must determine if that is really the optimal path to follow. Cost, time to market, and features are mainly marketing issues that may have a profound effect on your decision. Even so, these will not be addressed in this article. However, this is not to say that these issues are less critical. They are important and should be addressed initially, but they simply do not fall under the scope of this site. Internet Appliances are unique because they can not be classified as mere hardware platforms. They are a combination of hardware and software. Hence, a decision can not be based solely upon hardware. You must also consider the software that you plan to use. In fact, the software may be an even more important consideration because software supplies most of the basis for these processors. Hardware and software options also relate back to cost. For example, if you want to use software based on WinCE or Linux, you may find the hardware that supports these platforms exceeds your cost points.

QuestLink Momentum builds for open-source processors By Peter Clarke EE Times February 01, 2001 (3:01 PM EST) A handful of commercial efforts are experimenting with open-source CPU cores. Contract-manufacturing giant Flextronics, for example, is laying plans to tap into open-source hardware for its ASICs. And both Metaflow Technologies Inc. (La Jolla, Calif.) and IROC Technologies SA (Grenoble, France) are building products using the Leon-1, a Sparc-like open-source processor developed at the European Space Agency's Technology Center. Meanwhile, free cores for Bluetooth and the USB 2.0 interface could become available later this year, open-source developers said.

Intel Reportedly Fulfils Promise to Ramp 90nm Chips in Record Time
    by Anton Shilov
Intel said Wednesday that shipments of its 90nm Pentium 4 chips had increased 1 million units per week by late April, which is on-track with the company’s expectations to ramp up volume production of its 90nm products in shortest time possible. Prescott processor initially saw a massive delay from the Q2 2003 to Q1 to 2004 because of numerous issues with Intel’s 90nm fabrication process as well as the layout of the chip itself. But despite of this fact, Intel’s executives have been pretty confident in regards the ramp of its new products. Intel’s president Paul Otellini said last November that the Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker expects to ship around 70 million of its

LGA775 Products to Get Additional Markings
    by Anton Shilov
In an attempt to let the customers choose between processors with different heat-dissipation and power consumption, Intel will add a special marking on its chips in LGA775 packaging. All boxed versions of Intel’s new Pentium 4 and Celeron-D processors for the Socket T infrastructure will sport the so-called “Platform Compatibility Guide” code that will tell whether the chip can dissipate 84W or 115W, sources with knowledge of the matter said. Initially only boxed processors will have this code printed on the boxes, but eventually Intel plans to put the mark on the IHS of all chips in LGA775 packaging. Platform Compatibility Guide 04A (PGC 04A) will be intended for mainstream and value processors, such as Celeron D and some Pentium 4 chips at $278 price-point or below. Processors that correspond to PGC 04A should have TDP of 84W or below.
