Postgraduate Semester Abroad PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS The aim of all mathematics courses is to broaden and enrich existing mathematical knowledge. This course in particular focuses on techniques in probability and statistics with their application to real life problems. The teaching of new material is always preceded by a review of each student's current mathematical skills to determine the correct level. Presentation of material is accompanied by worked examples and students then move onto applications and problem-solving exercises at an appropriate level. The variety of mathematics courses available and the differing knowledge and ability of students means that no two students' needs will be identical. The teaching in mathematics is therefore designed to enable students to work at their own pace, on topics of their choice. Group 'workshop' sessions and individual tutorials form the basis of the teaching. Background
  • Elementary probability: definitions, simple formulas, and tree diagrams Probability distributions (continuous and discrete) with their means and variances The Binomial, Poisson, Geometric and Normal distributions

    Statistical Data Mining Tutorials
    Tutorial Slides by Andrew Moore
The following links point to a set of tutorials on many aspects of statistical data mining, including the foundations of probability, the foundations of statistical data analysis, and most of the classic machine learning and data mining algorithms. These include classification algorithms such as decision trees, neural nets, Bayesian classifiers, Support Vector Machines and cased-based (aka non-parametric) learning. They include regression algorithms such as multivariate polynomial regression, MARS, Locally Weighted Regression, GMDH and neural nets. And they include other data mining operations such as clustering (mixture models, k-means and hierarchical), Bayesian networks and Reinforcement Learning. I hope they're useful (and please let me know if they are, or if you have suggestions or error-corrections). Click here for a short list of topics.
    • Decision Trees. Information Gain. This tutorial steps through the ideas from Information Theory that eventually lead to Information Gain...one of the most popular measures of association currently used in data mining. We visit the ideas of Entropy and Conditional Entropy along the way. Look at the lecture on Gaussians for discussion of Entropy in the case of continuous probability density functions. I do not answer detailed mathematical questions by e-mail, so please come and see me about these during my office hours. The tutors for this subject are Ben Cairns and Tim Waterhouse Assumed background . The course requires an understanding of calculus and algebra as covered in MATH1050, and a continuing understanding of these areas as covered in MATH1051. A basic knowledge of matrices and multiple integration will prove helpful, but this is not essential. There is a good

Leonhard Euler (1707-83), a Swiss mathematician, made important contributions to practically every area of pure and applied mathematics. His influence was preeminent in analysis. Although his definition of a function was less precise than that now accepted, he was responsible for making the function concept and notation fundamental in analysis. Euler became totally blind in 1771 but loss of sight did not lessen his output, which included writings on optics, algebra, and the theory of the Moon's motion. Even after his death, his articles continued to appear in the press for nearly 50 more years.
