Presentation by Albert Shulte
On April 25, 2002, at Elliot Hall on the Oakland University campus in Rochester Michigan, Dr. Shulte gave a talk on statistical education at the Kindergarten to 12th grade (K-12) level in Michigan. Dr. Shulte has taught extensively at the high school and university levels and has served as a consultant in mathematics education to the Oakland schools in Michigan. His PhD. dissertation was on the teaching of probability and statistics to the ninth grade general Mathematics students. He has served on the Joint Committee of ASA and NCTM on the K-12 teaching of statistics.
When asked what our Chapter could do for the advancement of statistics in the schools, he responded that we could hook up with AP Statistics teachers to be guest lecturers or speak at a Mathematics Association meeting.

Reading charts and graphs, interpreting data, and making decisions based on information are key skills to being a successful worker and informed citizen. Being an informed citizen includes understanding statistics and probability. Adults cannot make reasonable decisions unless they understand the source and validity of statistical information. Be sure to look at the different set of resources listed at the Student/Learner webpage for this topic:
Use online real-time data to guide student discovery of the science behind the causes and effects of ground level ozone. This resources contains student worksheets and links to online data sources. CIECE: Online Classroom Data Projects
CIESE: Collaborative Projects

(See above) These real-time collaborative data projects use the power of the Internet to reach groups around the world. Try "Down the Drain–How Much Water Do You Use", or the "Noon Day Project". These are wonderful interdisciplinary projects. Some may require some word changes to avoid reference to middle schools and to parents. Data Tips of the Month from BRIDGE

Adults make decisions based on data in their daily lives and in the workplace. Reading charts and graphs, interpreting data, and making decisions based on the information are key skills to being a successful worker and an informed citizen. Being an informed citizen includes understanding statistics and probability as well. Adults cannot make reasonable decisions unless they understand from where the statistics come. Charts and graphs are essential in the workplace. Data from charts and graph are used to make decisions. Graph are useful tools in that they organize data so the information becomes clearer. This organized information can then be used to craw conclusions, to make decisions, or to influence others. Data is organized in a variety of fashions, from charts and graphs, to computer-generated spreadsheets. Data collection, analysis, and graphing are essential in the workplace. Many industries, manufacturing in particular, now use statistical control processes to monitor their processes in order to ensure quality products. Often the front line employee is required to collect the data used for charting the manufacturing process; therefore, employees at all levels should be knowledgeable about and comfortable with using a variety of charts. As more and more quality teams, consisting of a variety of employees, are charged with the task of ensuring quality products, employees will need to have an understanding of probability and sampling.

    In All Probability
Investigations in Probability and Statistics Written by Celia Cuomo If your students groan at the mention of statistics, or go blank when you bring up probability, you might ask what they want to be when they grow up. Wall Street mogul? The next Freud? TV meteorologist? Well, there you go: they'll be using statistics and probability all the way up the ladder. This unit makes these subjects fun , and makes real-world connections students will use all their lives.
Students dive into probability as they play games using coins, spinners, dice, and Native American game sticks. They investigate chance and probability with concrete materials, learn how to gather and analyze data, make predictions, and draw conclusions. As they gain direct experience, they also build confidence in their ability to explore probability and statistics. The guide provides background information on these themes, with information on real-life connections and careers. The activities provide a solid basis for the development of much-needed (and often neglected) real-life understandings and skills, stressing cooperation along the way.

The George L. Edgett Laboratory is a statistical consulting service with clients both on campus and in industry. It is currently directed by Terry Smith. STATLAB , as it is regularly called, was established in 1970, and was the first such facility in Canada. This Laboratory plays a central role in our graduate program in two ways. Many of our graduate students in statistics work as consultants in the Laboratory for some period of time, and thus expand their knowledge of applied statistics in a realistic context. Secondly, the activities of the Laboratory generate a large number of research problems, and these frequently evolve into topics for Ph.D. theses. Four cross-appointments have reinforced the applied component of our statistics program, so that the range of our research activities now stretches from theoretical statistics all the way to industrial statistics and biostatistics. David Bacon and Jim McLellan of the Chemical Engineering Department were cross-appointed to the Department in 1991 and 1997 respectively, and with them came their broad knowledge of industrial statistics and experimental design for chemical processes. Epidemiology, drug trials, clinical trials for cancer patients, survival data, are some of the areas of research covered by Miu Lam and Benny Zee. Miu Lam is cross-appointed from the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology, and Benny Zee is cross-appointed from the Clinical Trials Group in the Medical Faculty.
