Aboriginal Prints And Printmaking
part 1
An introduction by Roger Butler, Senior Curator of Australian Prints, National Gallery of Australia.

The first prints by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists were not produced until the late 1960's, and it was not until the 1970's that a sustained interest in this 'new' technique developed. Originally the impetuous for experimentation was from non-indigenous art advisors, and later, publishers of limited edition prints.
For many Aboriginal artists the use of printmaking methods was like an extension of traditional practice. The engraving of wood and linoblocks is a similar process to the incising of designs on stone or the surfaces of wooden sculptures and utilitarian objects. The sequential overprinting of colours in screenprinting is paralleled in the way traditional bark paintings are realised, and the same chalky opaque colours can be obtained. Concurrently with this development in traditional homelands was the emergence of a generation of urban-based Aboriginal artists who had trained in Western art traditions and techniques. Art schools and print workshops also began to invite Aboriginal artists to participate in their programmes. More recently print workshops have been established by a number of Aboriginal communities.

Maritain
Leo Tolstoy on What is Art?
He goes on to say that many people hold the subjective view that art is beauty, and we call beauty that which gives us a particular kind of pleasure..In the objective sense, we call beauty something absolutely perfect, and we acknowledge it to be so only because we receive, from this perfection,a certain kind of pleasure; so the objective definition is the same as the subjective. The kind of pleasure we receive from beauty is that which pleases us without evoking desire in us.We might try to be scientific about it, and try to find a definition of art based on beauty, which we could apply to all art productions to see if they belonged to the realm of art or not. But all attempts to define absolute beauty have failed.
There is no objective definition of beauty. All definitions amount to the same thing; that art is that which makes beauty manifest, and beauty is that which pleases without exciting desire.. But there is and can be no explanation of why one thing pleases one man and displeases another, so scientists cannot work out the laws of art.
Aetheticians have attempted to work backwards by first listing acknowledged works of art , and then trying to find a theory to fit them all. So now, no matter what insanities appear in art, once they find acceptance among the upper classes of society, a theory is quickly invented to explain and sanction them, just as if there had never appeared in history people who produced false and deformed art, which was afterwards discarded and forgotten. And one may see now in the art of our circle, to what lengths the insanity and deformity of art may go.

Printmaking As An Original Art
Search The Relief Methods Planographic Methods Other Mediums Other Features This summary is intended to acquaint the reader with the basic processes of printmaking as used both in the past and present. The concluding information will deal with some of the more frequent problems nagging the modern collector. Some of the greatest and most valuable images in the history of world art stem from printmaking. Yes such widespread confusion presently exists as to what exactly constitutes an original work of graphic art that people are all too often convinced into purchasing copies and reproductions at ridiculous prices. Briefly, a print is a multiple image which has been transferred to a surface from a matrix, such as a plate, wood block, stone, glass or screen. The most common belief is that a print is a reproduction of a painting for sale at the museum shops. It is important to observe that an artistic print is an original work of art when the artist deliberately selects one or more of the processes outlined below to create his image. The artistic act of creativity is bonded to the medium. Original prints are often referred to by the printing technique that was used to produce them: Etching, woodcut, lithograph, silk-screen, and many other wonderful mediums of graphic art.

To Guide Entry
The physical layout of the art room needs to function as an integral part of the curriculum. It has to have an open and unencumbered quality. In one corner are the printing inks, brushes, and rollers. In another closet are various and assorted papers which lend themselves to printing. At the sink we are stocked with plenty of empty cans, sponges and paper towels. Newspapers are needed to line the tables with when printing. The tables themselves need not be grouped but are better when separated from each other so as to accommodate two or three students at a time. Little work stations can be set up at each four foot table. This will include a 20” x 20” piece of plexiglass at each station, also rollers, tubes of water soluble printing ink and assorted corrugated papers and styrofoam trays for printing. The plan for structuring the unit will be as follows. The classes will consist of two hourly meetings each week so as to keep a semblance of continuity. The student may choose this as his “choice” art class. This means that it will meet twice as long as a regular art class. There will be a selection of xeroxed readings given out every other week. The students will have a week to review them before they are asked to pick out a reading which they can read aloud to the class. Poems and short stories will be included in the readings. The short stories will be found in a text called

His patience, photographic talent and rapport with animals have made his services sought after by animal lovers from around the world. Early in his career, Mr. Handy formed a cooperative partnership with NEADS (National Education for Assistance Dog Services) and over the years has photographed the graduating classes biannually. Although each class' size will vary, it can always be expected that the image will be something that only Winthrop Handy could create. In 2001 he received the International Eastman Kodak Innovators award.

Billie Sessions
Star Valley High School, Afton, Wyoming Subject: Art Education
Grade: 10-12 "The students were fascinated, excited, and a little shocked to be learning camera and darkroom procedures in a printmaking/art class. Their attitude changed about the increased possibilities of cameras in art work."
Purpose and Description of Project
Billie Sessions' project involved having her 16 students shoot black-and-white continuous tone pictures of landmarks or buildings characteristic of her area and then convert those photos into three-stage high-contrast film transparencies to be used in three-color silkscreen prints. The students learned the basics of camera operation, gained darkroom experience, came to really see and be aware of their community, learned the procedure for using high-contrast positives for silkscreen printmaking, and had the opportunity to display their work for the community. As a result, several prints have been requested for homes, businesses, and offices. Community interest in the process has been so high that an adult course is being set up; and community members have asked for their barns or homesteads to be printed.
