The University of Kansas Art Department offers B.A., B.F.A., and M.F.A. (60 Hour) degrees with an emphasis in printmaking. The printmaking area provides a complete studio experience with regular courses in Intaglio, Lithography, Relief and Serigraphy. Students may focus in one or more medium or choose to create a hybrid print form. The program encourages mixed-media work and equally embraces traditional approaches to the print medium.
Freedom of choice has been a hallmark within the art department, and no one aesthetic is stressed over others. Students are exposed to a range of techniques and concepts. The print area considers safety to be the top priority, and employs safe handling of materials and encourages the use of the least toxic approaches to all print media.
The print area brings in 2-3 visiting artists per year to do workshops and/or critiques. Recent visitors have included: Michi Itami; Adrianne Herman; Bill Fick; Joel Feldman; and John Ford. The University has a library dedicated to the arts and includes an excellent collection of historical, contemporary and theoretical print resources. The Art History department also offers several courses dedicated to printmaking including: History of Prints; Japanese Prints; Print Conservation; and others.

Press Materials Some 115 French 18th-century color prints, all in very fine impressions, are presented in an exhibition celebrating one of the most innovative periods in the history of color printmaking. During the second half of the 18th century in France, newly invented engraving and etching techniques were combined with new ways of printing a single image from multiple plates. Thus, for the first time, full-color prints could be created from just four basic colors: red, yellow, blue, and black. Within a matter of decades, thousands of images were produced, including some of the most complex and beautiful color prints ever made. The names of the printmakers who pioneered these techniquesBonnet, Demarteau, Janinet, Descourtis, and Debucourt, to name a feware not well known today, but the artists whose compositions they engraved rank among the most famous of the 18th centuryBoucher, Watteau, Fragonard, Robert, Boilly, among others. The prints capture the spirit of the timesthe reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI and the advent of the Revolutionin a unique and highly memorable way. The exhibition complements The Age of Watteau, Chardin, and Fragonard: Masterpieces of French Genre Painting.

http://www.unl.edu/finearts/art/studio/prnt.html
Definition of the Field : Printmaking uses various graphic techniques to produce creative visual art in printed form. Processes include intaglio, lithography, monoprint, papermaking, photomechanical techniques, relief, screenprinting, and book arts media. Printmaking is for all students who discover in themselves a love of drawing. They will experience the graphic qualities of contrast in design, pattern and composition. Students explore the analytic potential of process and sequential growth. They are challenged by the impact of print media on society, culture and art. Career Opportunities : Trained printmakers are working artists, practicing the expression of a personal understanding of their place in the world. They contribute to the continuity of human creativity through time. Their art may sell successfully in the open marketplace, or they may find employment as printmakers/artists in schools of all levels. They may be involved in fine art print studios, executing original prints for other artists. Printmaking skills, such as screenprinting or photomechanical techniques, also have commercial, non-art applications that may afford skilled employment. Printmakers may also work in museum collections, in conservation or in art galleries. The Program : The main objectives of the printmaking program are to educate the student in the creative potential inherent in all of the various print media, including the traditional techniques of intaglio, lithography, screen printing and woodcut, and new innovations, combinations and expanding definitions of the print. Students will understand the relationship of the creative process of printmaking to a technical foundation of information and safety; skillful application and idea development become foundations in their processes.
