Printmaking
Tools of the Trade
Printmaking is one of the most versatile and fulfilling art involvements one can experience. There are so many different types of printmaking that there is surely one to suit your personality and work style. Everything from simple shaped sponges and other materials to more technical etched metal platesand an ocean of ideas between the twocan be used to create controlled images, personal art statements and saleable art items. All you have to do is examine the possibilities and dive in! Supplies needed for basic printmaking include ink, paper, ink brayer (a small roller with a handle attached), and your choice of plate master. Linoleum block, wood block and easy-carve soft base materials are great for those beginning their printmaking experience. Shaping any type of sponge, foam sheet, mat board, or foam board can create simple, yet striking prints. What makes these "masters" so appealing is their availability, their ease of manipulation and the low cost. Once you are finished with the master, simply toss it away, or clean it and re-use it later. Tools required for shaping these materials might include scissors or sharp-bladed knives. Remember that the positive, or high, portion of the master will be coated with ink and leave its reverse image on the printing paper. Select a design that is full of large flat areas, allowing the shapes and contours to create rich prints.

BFA Courses: Printmaking / Art of the Book (VPR)
Added Spring 2003:
Extended Media
VPR 1600
/ 4 credits
A second-semester, interdisciplinary foundation course in traditional and alternative methods for image-making, using digital technology, printmaking, and photography. Students find opportunities to link or create transitions between each of these media to inform and enhance their artwork. After discovering and learning about their subject, they generate ideas, images, and text for a finished artist's book. Several binding options are taught, and students are asked to consider content, sequencing, pace, rhythm, rhyme, and repetition. Includes demonstrations, critiques, readings, slide lectures, visiting artists, and films.
Prerequisite: For first-year students who have taken VDE 1150, VDR 1010, and VSC 1010. Introduction to Intaglio and Silkscreen
VPR 2010
/ 4 credits / Every semester
An intensive introduction to each medium. Intaglio involves sharply etched lines or velvety, delicate tones, achieved on a copper plate. Silkscreen uses photo and resist stencils to create multilayered images. Through exposure to the unique characteristics of intaglio and silkscreen, students greatly enlarge the technical vocabulary with which to refine and express their ideas. Introduction to Lithography and Woodcut
VPR 2020
/ 4 credits / Every semester
In this concentrated overview of each medium, the surface vibrancy, richness, and extraordinary textural range of lithography are coupled with the directness and graphic qualities of woodcut. Traditional and contemporary lithographic processes are demonstrated. A variety of woodcut techniques, using gouges, chisels, and electric tools, are employed to manipulate a surface.
