Located wholly within the province of Prince Edward Island , construction of the PEIR started in , financed by the United Kingdom . Initially built to 42 inch Cape Gauge , the line was frequently criticized for its meandering nature, caused by construction contractors who were paid by the mile . At one point there was on average one railway station for every 2.5 miles of track. The main line connected the northwestern village of Tignish with the Northumberland Strait ports of Summerside Charlottetown Georgetown , and Souris . Confederation
The United Kingdom had consistently encouraged the small colony to enter into Canadian Confederation , something which it had been avoiding since playing host to the Charlottetown Conference a decade earlier. Download PDF Version (457 KB) Over the next 100 years, temperature increases of 3 to 4°C are projected for the Atlantic Provinces. Changes in precipitation patterns and extreme events are also anticipated. These climate changes are expected to be the largest and most rapid of the last 10,000 years and will have profound effects on our lives and the ecosystems that support us. The air we breathe
The number of "bad air days" caused by smog events is expected to increase due to climate warming. Smog is a mix of pollutants, including nitrogen oxides (NO ) and volatile organic compounds (VOC), which react together in sunlight to form ground level ozone. This ozone is harmful to human health, causing impaired lung function, increased hospital admissions, and premature death. The very young, the elderly, and those with chronic lung diseases, such as asthma, are at the greatest risk. Agriculture
Agriculture is the largest industry in PEI. Although a longer, warmer summer would lengthen the growing season and increase the yield of warm-weather crops, these conditions could also result in more droughts and a greater need for irrigation. Warmer winters may benefit agriculture, by reducing winter kill of forage and fruit, yet create problems for farmers by increasing the range and abundance of insect pests. An increase in extreme weather events, such as storms, hail, floods, and drought, may be the greatest concern for agriculture. These events damage crops and livestock, and can affect hydro power availability and power lines.

In February, the province provides a list of potential millennium bursary recipients to the Foundation.

Prince Edward Island Railway In 1871, the Prince Edward Island (PEI) legislature authorized the construction of a railway to connect one end of the island to the other. One of its biggest political supporters, J.C. Pope, envisioned that the railway would bring great prosperity in the form of industry, employment and tourism. Construction costs, he imagined, would be nothing compared to the money the railway would generate.
Prince Edward Island Railway, 1899, cover and map
One of PEI's biggest demands in the 1873 Confederation negotiations was that the federal government take over the railway and guarantee operation of a continuous water (or other) link to the mainland. Canada kept its promise, taking over the line and operating a ferry service to New Brunswick. Canadian National ran trains on the Island for the last time in 1989. The link to the mainland now takes the form of the Confederation Bridge.

    THE CONFEDERATION BRIDGE
    PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
    HISTORY
The Confederation Bridge is the recently built 12.9 kilometer span between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. It is the longest bridge over ice-covered water (the Northumberland strait, between PEI and the other two maritime provinces, freezes for three to four months of the year) in the world right now. It opened in May 1997 and the people of PEI are hoping it will continue to bring in the increase of tourists we experienced over the summer. But its story is one of controversy and worry, hope and expectation. Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in Canada, and being an island, the venues of transportation have always had to confer with the Northumberland strait, the body of water separating us from the mainland. When PEI joined the Confederation of Canada, we were guaranteed transportation service connecting us with the mainland. The most obvious form of transportation was a ferry service and we've had a year-round ferry service between Borden-Carleton PEI and Cape Tourmentine New Brunswick and a summer service between Wood Islands PEI and Caribou Nova Scotia for the past few decades at least. But in the past fifteen or so years, the ferry service has shown to be inefficient in the peak tourism season of the summer months. In the late 1980s, a plebiscite was presented to citizens of Prince Edward Island, asking them to vote on the construction of a bridge linking us to Nova Scotia. At this time, both the ideas of a bridge and a underwater tunnel were presented as the government had not started in depth research on the aspects of either. The people of PEI voted to for the building of a bridge and the government went ahead with plans. It was decided that the most feasible option would be a bridge and proposals were brought in from enterprises whose main focus was building this specific bridge.
